Every 30 seconds there is an earthquake. But don"t worry because most are so weak that they cannot be felt. Only a few big ones hurt people. Here are some tips on how to stay safely in an earthquake. If you are indoors during an earthquake, hide under a desk. Stay away from windows and anything that could fall on you. If you are outdoors, move to a clear place. Try to be away from trees, signs, buildings and streetlights. These could fall on you. If you are in a shop and far from the door, don"t try to run to outside and rush for exits (出口). Everyone will be doing that and you"ll find it hard getting out. Don"t get into a lift during an earthquake. Just hide under some strong covers near you. When an earthquake has ended, be careful because after-shocks may still happen. These are just as dangerous as the earthquake itself. So stay under the desk until you make sure it"s safe to get up. If you are at home and you smell gas, open the windows and get out of the building as quickly as you can. A gas line in your house may be broken. This could be very dangerous. |

The English Fashion recently asked people about their wonderful ideas and plans about things they could do. The magazine asked people the following question:"If you had all the money you wanted, what would you like to do?" About 500 people answered the survey question. Almost half (49%) of the people in the survey said they would buy material things such as a bigger house or a better car. One fifth (20%) of the people said they would travel to the interesting or famous places. 17% answered that they would give money to someone else. They would donate money to a charity or to help poor people. More than half of the rest of the people (about 10%) said they would give money to help medical research. All the other people in the Engli8h Fashion survey said they would save money in the bank. They said they didn"t know what they would like to do right now, but perhaps in a few years they would find a good use for the money. "Lots of people think that if they buy bigger and better things, they will feel happier," said Dr Mary Wilson, a sociologist at City University. "However," she said, "this feeling will not last long. After a while, they won"t be satisfied with them any longer." Dr. Wilson thinks the happiest people are those who make a change in people"s lives that will last into the future. She thinks those people who give money to someone else or to medical research are thinking beyond themselves and their own needs at the moment. If they had all the money they wanted, they would make a difference in the world. |

Some people believe that schools will no longer be necessary in the near future. They said that because of the Internet and other new technology, there is no longer any need for school buildings, classes or teachers. Perhaps this will be true one day, but if the world has no schools, I can"t imagine (想象) how our society will be. In fact, we should learn how to use new technology to make schools better. We should invent a new kind of school that is linked to libraries, museums, science centers, labs and even companies. Technological companies should create (创造) learning programs for schools. Scientists or professors could give talks through the Internet. TV networks and local stations could develop programs about things students are actually studying in school. Labs could set up websites to show new technology so students could see it on the Internet. |

Have you seen dolphins? Dolphins are interesting animals. Scientists have found they are very smart. Although they don"t have hands, they can solve problems by using tools, just like us. There is no evidence that dolphins have a language of their own, but they can understand many sign languages. They can always give quite correct and quick responds. Amazing, isn"t it? Dolphins live in a very different world, but they can do our "intelligent (智力) tests" easily. Are you interested? Please go and see by yourself. |

The dinosaurs suddenly died out. What happened to them? Scientists thought that a change in temperature may be the reason. They have come up with lots of ideas to explain the end of the dinosaurs. The most famous one is the minor planet (小行星) idea. Everything Was OK before a large minor planet suddenly hit the earth. What a terrible hit! It caused big fires, storms, acid rain, and even earthquakes and volcano eruptions. The hit produced a lot of dust, which flew up into the air and blocked the sun for months. The earth became very cold without sunlight. The plants died first. Then the grass-eating animals died of hunger. Then the meat-eating animals could not find food either. They began to eat each other, but after a while they died out too. The dinosaurs, either plant-eaters or meat-eaters, did not live through the disaster (灾 难). What a sad story! In April, a British scientist thought of a new idea about the death of the dinosaurs. He thinks that after the minor planet hit the earth, the temperature change left more dinosaur boys than girls! Without enough female dinosaurs to hatch (孵) the eggs, the dinosaur population be-came smaller and smaller. |

The only language that seems easy to learn is the mother tongue. We should remember that we all learned our own language well when we were children. If we could learn English in the same way, it would not seem so difficult. Think of what a small child does. He listens to what people say. He tries what he hears. So it is hard to say that learning English is easy. We must do a lot of practice. And practice needs great effort and takes much time. Good teachers, records, tapes, books, and dictionaries will be helpful, but they cannot do the student"s work for him. |
读短文,用动词的适当形式填空。 It 1_____ (seem) easy to learn our mother tongue. Why is that? It is only because we learned our tongue when we were little. We 2_____ (listen) what the others said. And tried 3_____ (do) what we heard. We now 4_____ (not have) enough time for the language study. So 5_____ (learn) English isn"t very easy. |
