Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy
science can be easy; there"s no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only
have to share your children"s curiosity. Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of
seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me "textbook questions" about
schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another in
silence. Finally I said, "Now that we"ve finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about
science?"?
After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, "Have you ever seen a grasshopper (蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?"?
This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours. ?
Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a
question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When
adults increase their "wait time" to three seconds or more, children give more logical, complete and
creative answers.
Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion, don"t jump in
with "That"s right" or "Very good". These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior.
But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, "That"s interesting" or "I"d never thought of it that way before", or coming up with more
questions or ideas.?
Never push a child to "Think". It doesn"t make sense, children are always thinking, without your
telling them to. What"s more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find
the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller target for your
disagreement.?
Lastly, show; don"t tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson
children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a
magnifying glass(放大镜), and they"ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates (蒸发), set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.

1. According to the passage, children are natural scientists, and to raise their interest, the most
important  thing for adults to do is _______.

A. to share the children"s curiosity
B. to let them see the world around?
C. to explain difficult phrases about science
D. to supply the children with lab equipment?

2. In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the word "lists" could best be replaced by _______.

A. any questions
B. questions from textbooks?
C. any problems
D. any number of questions?

3. According to the passage, children can answer questions in a more logical, complete and creative
   way if adults _______.

A. wait at least for three seconds after a question.
B. wait for one or two seconds after a question.?
C. tell them to answer the next day.
D. ask them to answer quickly.

4. The author mentions all of the following techniques for adults to share with their children"s curiosity
    except that adults should _______.

A. encourage their children to ask questions of their own?
B. offer their children chances to see things for themselves?
C. be patient enough when their children answer questions?
D. tell their children stories instead of reciting facts?

Are you ready to experience life as it may be in the future? Here are some interesting points to learn
about the future.
Artificial intelligence:Many years down the road humans  might not even be recognizable because
artificial intelligence  (also known as AI) will have combined with our natural  states.Scientists are learning more about the human brain every day, and they are working toward making smart robots we can use to
help us.Some people say that nanobots-supertiny robots-may help us in invisible (看不见的) ways in the
future. They say they will be everywhere, outnumbering humans many times over!
Nanotechnology:This is the ability to make tools and  helpful robots that are a billion times smaller
than we can see.Scientists have already made many nanosized tools that they can use. When this science
is improved and becomes more common and affordable, it will change everything.
Braintocomputer communication:Nanocomputers will probably be linked to your thoughts, voice and
emotions, and be able to react to your needs. In the future people will rely on wireless technology and
everyone and everything  will be linked.Your brain will be able to receive information  from computers
to fill your head with knowledge or teach you new things. When you want to learn a new skateboarding
trick or dance move, nanocomputers will send the information to your brain and allow your body to use
the tips and apply them-no studying involved!
Virtual reality:You already love virtualreality games-they make imaginary worlds in which you can
play. But what if it allows you to have a cool new school?Virtual worlds are being created so
computergenerated environments will allow you to learn school lessons with your teacher and your
friends seemingly present without actually being there.Technology will give you a 3D image and link it to
your brain in a way that makes you actually feel as if you were there.

1. The passage mainly introduces________.

A. the use of robots in the future
B. the importance of science and technology
C. some technology in the future
D. some ways to improve communication

2. What can we conclude from the second paragraph?

A. The number of robots is greater than the number of humans.
B. AI will bring about great changes to people"s lives.
C. Nanobots will take the place of humans in some years.
D. Scientists won"t stop learning about the human brain until AI is widely used.

3. The fourth paragraph introduces a new way of________.

A. delivering and getting information
B. school education
C. exercising
D. entertaining

4. We can most probably read this passage in________.

A. a government report
B. a scientific magazine
C. a news report
D. a research paper

Allow them to study in blocks of time, such as for half an hour with a fiveminute break in the middle.
__2__ Ideal(理想的) study times are after dinner or right after school before dinner.
Never allow your children to study in front of the television, as that will encourage passive activity.
__3__
You"ll also need to help your kids find the right place to study. After you"ve set up a good study time
for little learners, set up a good place where they can get those creative juices flowing.
__4__ Make sure there is a table or a desk and a comfortable chair.
__5__ This includes helping them out with their homework sometimes and being there for them with

Researchers from the University of Newcastle are leading a worldfirst study which builds on earlier
unpublished research that children are most likely to be guided by their father"s eating and exercise habits.
The new study "Healthy Dads,Healthy Kids",led by Associate Professor Philip Morgan from the
designed to help fathers promote and demonstrate to their children positive behaviours related to physical
activity and healthy eating.
"The earlier findings showed that children are more likely to follow the example set by their father than
their mother when it comes to eating and exercise," said Morgan.
Morgan saw striking results in a previous trial involving 165 overweight children. He found children who
lost the most weight had fathers who were engaged in the new eating and exercise plan.
"We might think mothers are the main influence on children"s diet and health, but the reality may be
different," said Morgan. "The roles of fathers are changing.More families have two parents working and
more fathers are involved with food preparation and food shopping than in the past."
"Fathers influence the food and physical activity habits in the home through their behaviours, attitudes
and approach to food and eating, and act as a role model to their children," said Morgan.
Researchers are inviting fathers who would like to reduce their weight to join the "Healthy Dads,Healthy
Kids" program.Participation involves attending eight sessions (讲习班) at the University of Newcastle
over six months where the men will receive information, have weightrelated measurements recorded and
complete questionnaires.
Cooking healthy food with the kids and creating a backyard fitness circuit (循环训练场) are among
the assignments (课外作业) for fathers taking part in the study.
1.What do we learn about the  "Healthy Dads,Healthy Kids" program?
A.It aims to build close family relationships.
B.It involves fathers who want to lose weight.
C.It will last more than eight months.
D.It offers free online courses for parents.
2.Morgan finds a link between children"s weight loss and________.
A.their parents" efforts
B.regular sports training
C.balanced diets
D.their father"s influence
3.According to the earlier research, children seem to ________.
A.copy their father"s diets and exercise habits
B.develop healthy eating habits by themselves
C.grow taller if their parents often do exercise
D.help their parents to form exercise habits
4.Which of the following facts causes the change of fathers" roles?
A.That kids have more time to spend with family.
B.That more kids need their father"s help in learning.
C.That there are more working mothers than before.
D.That fathers become much busier than before.
