Child labor — the employment of children in industry, often against their will — has been a problem for many years. Over a hundred years ago, Charles Dickens shocked many of his readers when he described the conditions under which young children worked in British factories. The conditions Dickens described continue almost unchanged today in many parts of the world. The only difference is that today employment of children is confined(limited)to small industries and family businesses, such as hotels, restaurants and particularly farms, rather than to large factories. Girls suffer more from child labor practices than boys. Many of them are forced to start work when they are only ten years old. Although the work they are given to do is often light, it is often harmful to the health. Recently, children as young as six years were found to be working in Asian factories, and the children were working from eight to fourteen hours a day in overcrowded and unhealthy working conditions. Sometimes a whole family group is employed, with the payment going to a parent or older relative. The children not only receive nothing or very little for their long hours of work, but also they are prevented from attending school. Therefore, when they become older they are unable to do any other kind of work. The solution to the problem of child labor is clearly better laws to protect young children, greater supervision(监督)of industry and heavier fines for those who break the laws. Only in this way can young boys and girls be allowed to enjoy the most valuable time of their lives—childhood. 小题1:Which’s the main idea of the first paragraph?A.Children are often willing to work in large factories. | B.Most children are working in British factories. | C.The poor working conditions of child labor in Dickens’ novel. | D.The working conditions for children are similar to those a hundred years ago. | 小题2:Girls’ work is ____.A.not harmful to the health though it is heavy | B.not harmful to the health because it is light | C.harmful to the health though it is light. | D.harmful to the health because it is heavy | 小题3:Young children go to work ____.A.because they are forced to | B.in order to be skillful in a certain kind of work | C.in order to be paid well | D.in order to earn money for education | 小题4:To solve the problem of child labor, the writer suggests the following BUT ____.A.looking over factories more closely | B.raising their payment and improving the system of education | C.improving laws of protecting children’s interests | D.punishing lawbreakers with severer fines |

For most students, school is over and summer fun is here. Even kids who are going to summer school don"t need to be cooped up indoors during these bright sunny days. Why? Thanks to technology, many kids now have the option of attending "virtual" summer schools online. These "virtual" classes are not new. Many colleges and universities offer online courses where the students never meet; they correspond with their teachers and classmates on the web. Even some traditional schools add to daily classes with internet-based assignments and feedback. There are a lot of benefits to online schooling, and that"s why public schools have started participating in this non-traditional type of education. Instead of students riding the bus, going to class, eating lunch at school, and going home in the early afternoon, they can now log on(登录)at any time of day or night and learn. This flexible online option requires just as much work and participation as normal summer school. However, the timing is different. Online summer school is not for all students, just like it isn’t for all adults. The student needs to be an excellent reader in order to obtain as much information as possible from the lectures. In addition, students must understand computers and be self motivated(激发)in order to complete the class successfully. If the students meet these requirements, then online summer school has many advantages. Written lectures can be read and reread until the student understands them. The students can email each other and the teacher if they need help. Students who participate in online summer school often earn higher grades because the teachers can answer more questions without slowing down the entire class progress. And because of this new technology, summer school students can still go to the beach, travel around the world, and take family vacations! 小题1:Online schooling has the following advantages and benefits EXCEPT ____. A.Students needn’t have as much work or participation as in traditional schools. | B.Students don’t have to go to school in crowded buses. | C.Students can have more time to understand the lessons. | D.Teachers and students have more time to arrange their own things flexibly. | 小题2:What does the underlined word “option” probably mean? A.chance of expressing opinion | B.chance of expressing wishes | C.right of demanding | D.right of choosing | 小题3:Online summer school is not suitable for ____. A.adults or children who are too old | B.students who are poor in reading | C.those who don’t master good computer technology | D.students who can’t finish homework on their own | 小题4:Which of the following people is most supposed to choose online schooling? A.A child in the kindergarten. | B.A primary school student. | C.A government office clerk. | D.A child whose parents are working. |

Many businesses today use conferences as a means of discussing new plans for company. As people are paying more attention to the environment and green problems, more businesses are looking for ways to reduce their negative effect on the environment. Many businesses do this by using web conferencing. Web conferencing is a technology that allows people to communicate more effectively over the Internet. It is an easy way of hosting and attending conferences without having to leave the office. Each of the people involved in a web conference will be posted an invitation to the conference with the time and date of the web conference on it. When the conference is ready to begin, all participants (参与者) must sit at their computer and they will be connected over the Internet. Obviously, in doing this no fuel is used in traveling to and from a conference, and less work time is taken up in attending a conference. Any material to be used during the web conference is simply e-mailed to all the participants before the conference. This not only saves paper but also greatly reduces mailing cost for the business. As a conference hall or business center isn’t being used, it means that the only power that is used is the power used by the participants’ personal computers. Similarly conference organizers don’t have to arrange for food or overnight accommodation (住宿) for participants. All this means that less energy is used. Many companies actively do many things to reduce their negative impact (影响) on the environment. So web conferencing is much cheaper and greener and more people are willing to host and attend a web conference. 小题1:What is the passage mainly about?A.Ways of protecting the environment. | B.Green benefits of web conference. | C.Ways of hosting a web conference. | D.Impacts of web conferencing on costs. | 小题2:According to paragraph 1, many companies use web conferencing because they________.A.are interested in using any new technology | B.believe that web conferencing is more convenient | C.want to do something to protect the environment | D.haven’t enough money to hold a traditional conference | 小题3:Web conferencing has all of the following advantages EXCEPT _________.A.saving time | B.promoting understanding | C.saving energy | D.saving paper | 小题4:The participants of a web conference_________.A.will be e-mailed an invitation before the conference | B.are required to sit in the office together | C.will receive many paper materials | D.must have access to the Internet |

Children at a school in Italy have today begun an experiment to replace all their books with personal computers. The pupils involved will each be given a special laptop that contains their entire courses. Until today, the Don Milani di Rivoli elementary school in central Turin was like any other. Children turned up, got out their books and pens and began the process of learning. But now, in what"s being described as a unique experiment, 60 fifth-grade pupils and a number of third-graders, will start using computers only. The mini-laptops, which run Windows software, all have a full curriculum programmed into them. The pupils will use the computers to do all their reading and writing. Security systems within the laptops mean the children"s access to the Internet is strictly controlled. The machines weigh less than a kilogram, can be dropped from a height of 1.5 metres and are waterproof. Instead of spending 700 dollars a year on books, the laptops, built by the Italian company Olidata, cost less than 400 dollars. One of the teachers involved in the scheme says that, for the first time, schools will be able to verify in a scientific way how a computer alone can improve the learning process. The experiment, which has the backing of parents, is due to last a year. In other countries, such a programme is also being carried out. Venezuela is ordering one million low cost laptops for its school children. The machines will be based on the Intel Classmate laptop that has been designed for school children. Many see the deal as a blow for the One Laptop Per Child organization that has also been introducing its child- friendly machine to developing nations. 小题1: Which of the following is TRUE about the mini-laptop?A.It is heavy for pupils to carry. | B.It can"t be damaged by water. | C.It is one and a half meters high. | D.It is easily broken or damaged. | 小题2: The pupils use the laptop to ____ in class.
