specially for people who are still living the single life. I was a bit surprised when I googled "Singles Day" on
the Internet, to find that China is the only country in the world that has set up a special day for singles to
celebrate their lives.
An old story goes that once there were four single men, leading very boring lives. None of them were
married, or had lovers, or did anything exciting. They just sat around all day and played Mahjong. One day
they played Mahjong from 11 in the morning until 11 at night. During the game, no matter who won, the
winning card was always the "four columns" card (the card shows four independent, parallel columns in
two lines). Even more of a coincidence, it was Nov. 11. In order to remind them of the day, they nicknamed
it Singles Day.
Singles Day was first celebrated at various universities in Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu Province during
the 1990s. These college students carried their university tradition into society after they graduated. Singles
Day is now a special day for all.
The main way to celebrate Singles day is to have dinner with your single friends, but it"s important that
each person pay their own way to show their independence. People also hold "blind date" parties in an attempt
to say goodbye to their single lives.
For breakfast on Singles Day, singles often eat four youtiao (deep-fried dough sitcks) representing the
four "ones" in "11.11" and one baozi (steamed stuffed buns) representing the dot in between.  Many singles
also choose to say goodbye to their single lives on the day.
Many attend "blind date" parties and many people choose to marry on this day. In addition to meaning
"single", the four "ones" of the date can also mean "only one" as in "the only one for me". Some people will
use this date and this meaning to tell their special someone that they are the only"one" in their heart. 1. Which of the statement is TRUE according to the passage? [     ]
A. Singles Day has a long history.
B. Only men celebrate Singles Day.
C. Singles Day is only celebrated in China.
D. Students in Nanjing University started Singles Day. 2. People celebrate the festival mainly by _____. [     ]
A. playing Mahjong
B. having dinner
C. getting married
D. hanging out with friends 3. What is the best title of the passage? [     ]
A. Singles Day
B. Four Single Men"s Singles Day
C. University Culture on Singles Day
D. Symbolic Food on Singles Day 4. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
    (a-para.1  b-para.2  c-para.3  d-para.4  e-para.5  f-para.6) [     ]

about 200 years ago. These violins sound better than any others. They even sound better than violins made
today. Violin makers and scientists try to make instruments like the old Italian violins. But they aren"t the
same. Musicians still prefer the old ones. No one really knows why these old Italian violins are so special,
but many people think they have an answer.
Some people think it is the age of the violins. They say that today"s violins will also sound wonderful
someday. But there is a problem here. Not all old violins sound wonderful. Only those from Cremona are
special. So age cannot be the answer. There must be something different about Cremona or those Italian
violin makers.
Other people think the secret to those violins is the wood. The wood of the violin is very important. It
must be from certain kinds of trees. It must not be too young or too old. Perhaps the violin makers of
Cremons knew something special about wood for violins.
But the kind of wood may not be so important. It may be more important to cut the wood in a special
way. Wood for a violin must be cut very carefully. It has to be the right size and shape. The smallest
difference will change the sound of the violin. Musicians sometimes think that this was the secret of the
Italians. Maybe they understood more than we do about how to cut the wood.
Size and shape may not be the answer either. Scientists measured these old violins very carefully. They
can make new ones that are exactly the same size and shape. But the new violins still do not sound as good
as the old one. Some scientists think the secret may be the varnish, which covers the wood of the violin and
makes it look shiny. It also helps the sound of the instrument. No one knows what the Italian violin makers
used in their varnish. So no one can make the same varnish today.
There may never be other violins like the violins of Cremona. Their secret may be lost forever. Young
musicians today hope this is not true. They need fine violins. But there aren"t very many of the old violins
left. Also, the old violins are very expensive. Recently, a famous old Italian violin was sold for about
US $ 300,000! 1. This passage is about _____. [     ]
A. making violins
B. musical instruments
C. scientific ideas
D. the old Italian violins 2. The best violins _____. [     ]
A. are made with modern techniques
B. were lost many years ago
C. were made in Italy 200 years ago
D. were made by scientists. 3. Some people think that modem violins _____. [     ]
A. will sound better in the future
B. will sound worse in the future
C. sound wonderful naturally
D. will never be as old as those from Cremona 4. Violins made today _____. [     ]
A. look the same as the old ones
B. sound the same as the old ones
C. are better than the old ones
D. have the same varnish as the old ones

阅读理解。     Most people know that a wedding ring is symbolic of the bond of love and commitment between two
people. But not everyone knows about the history behind this small yet powerful symbol. The history of
the wedding ring goes back not just hundreds but thousands of years. No other currently practiced wedding
tradition has been around as long.
The Egyptians were the first recorded civilization to use the wedding ring. In Egyptian hieroglyphics
(象形文字), a circle represented eternity because there"s no beginning and no end. Once a woman accepted
the ring she became the "property" of the person who gave it to her and she was in a sense "his". The first
wedding ring could have been made of braided grass or hay (which would have been changed often), ivory,
bone, or leather. Eventually, metal was used, but the first wedding bands were in the completely natural state
and rough. However, the wedding rings always expressed the same eternal and lasting love.
The Egyptians wore the wedding ring on the left hand because it was believed that a vein (静脉) in the
left hand went straight to the heart. This tradition is still commonly practiced today in most parts of the world
largely for practical purposes(most people are right handed). It is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand.
But there are some countries and groups which do not follow this tradition. In the Jewish faith, the wedding
ring is put on the index finger. Roman Catholics traditionally wore their wedding band on the right hand, and
in many countries and regions in Europe some people still follow this tradition.
It is interesting to note that in the long history of the wedding ring, it is only in the last century that men
began to wear them. However, now both men and women show their love and commitment by exchanging
rings on their wedding day.
Once you begin shopping for rings you may be amazed by the choices that await you. There are several
different types of metals: traditional gold, white gold, platinum, and titanium. You can have an inscription put
on the inside of the band if you like. Some people are even choosing a tattoo band. The styles vary from a
simple yet elegant band to an elaborate (精巧的) ring covered with jewels. If you do not buy the wedding and
engagement rings as a set, you will want to be sure the styles can match perfectly. Choose carefully because
this choice will need to stand the test of eternity. 1. What"s the best title for this passage? [     ]
A. History of rings.
B. Interesting facts about rings.
C. Different beliefs about rings.
D. The meaning of the rings. 2. What may the word "eternity" in paragraph 2 probably mean? [     ]
A. Elegance
B. Marriage
C. Wedding
D. Foreverness 3. Which is NOT true according to the passage? [     ]
A. The meaning of the rings remained unchanged.
B. Jewish are so faithful to their beliefs to wear rings on the fourth finger.
C. One should be careful of choosing a ring in a shop from different kinds.
D. Now most people in the world still follow Roman Catholics traditionally. 4. What can we infer from the passage? [     ]
A. Men were looked down upon by women for thousands years.
B. Only women have the right to make themselves beautiful.
C. Women wore rings thousands of years earlier than men.
D. You can have an inscription put on the inside the band.
