West Virginia-Public schools are using a dance video game to help get students in shape. In these schools, students are often told to turn off their video games and get some exercise. The schools have found a new way for their students to work out while playing a new video game. West Virginia is one of the heaviest states in the country. About half of its fifthgraders are considered to be overweight, and their parents are worried about that. To get them moving on a healthier path, the state"s public schools are using a video game called "Dance Revolution". To use the game, players should stand on a special mat in front of a TV screen. Following arrows on the screen, players must move their feet to the specific symbols on the mat. Players must move quickly, touching symbols on the mat at just the right time. With each song, they get more exercise. "If we can get children to change their behavior at a young age, they will hopefully grow up to be healthy and active adults," said Carl Callison of Mountain State Blue Cross, a health care company. West Virginia is ranked among the top three heaviest states. About a third of West Virginians are considered to be obese (肥胖的). Even more are considered to be overweight. Extra weight can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes (糖尿病), some cancers, and many other health issues. "One out of three children born in West Virginia today will have diabetes by the time they grow up," said Nidia Henderson, a manager for the public employees" insurance program. "That"s a terrible thing and not acceptable." All of West Virginia"s 157 middle schools are using the video game. School officials hope that all public schools in the state will use the game within the next three years. However, officials emphasize that the game is not meant to substitute physical education and health classes. The game will be part of physical education classes and afterschool programs. |

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that_ overconsumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place. The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household"s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard. Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary. There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realise just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb. |

A. Using too much packaging. B. Recycling too many wastes. C. Making more products than necessary. D. Having more material than is needed. |
2. The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show________. |
A. the tendency of cutting household waste B. the increase of packaging recycling C. the rapid growth of supermarkets D. the fact of packaging overuse |
3. According to the text, recycling________. |
A. helps control the greenhouse effect B. means burning packaging for energy C. is the solution to gas shortage D. leads to a waste of land |
4. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4? |
A. Unpackaged products are of bad quality. B. Supermarkets care more about packaging. C. It is improper to judge quality by packaging. D. Other products are better packaged than food. |
5. What can we learn from the last paragraph? |
A. Fighting wastefulness is difficult. B. Needless material is mostly recycled. C. People like collecting recyclable wastes. D. The author is proud of their consumer culture. |

English fans have been known for quarreling endlessly and even fighting in the stands(看台). Several violent actions in a game between Argentina and Chile in 1964 resulted in the death of 309 people. But up until now at least, there has been only one football war. The war took place between EL Salvador and Honduras, two Central American countries. Newspapers supply us with news about events in our hometowns, in our country and in other parts of the world. Today we can read about important things that took place in foreign countries on the same day they happened, even in countries far away. But hundreds of years ago, news of things took months or even years to travel from one country to another. In those times, news was often passed from one person to another andnever entirely true. Newspapers today supply us with more than just what happened in our country or in other countries. If we want to know what the weather will be like, we can read the weather reports. If we want to find out what films are being shown, or what plays or concerts we can go to we can look in the newspapers.
