No one wants to look silly or do the wrong thing at a new job. It is important to make the right impression (印象)-not the wrong one-from the very first day. You will face new people. You will be in a new place. It may be difficult to know what to do. Here are six "dos" to help you make it through the first days at a new job. Get to work on time. Employers value employees who come to work right on time. Give yourself an extra 15 minutes to make sure you arrive on time. Pay attention to instructions. One of the first things your manager may do is to introduce you to your workmates. These people will be important to you. They are the ones who will answer your questions when the boss is not around. Ask plenty of questions. Make sure that your manager has told you what is expected of you. If he or she has not told you your job duties, ask for a list. Set daily and weekly goals for yourself ____. You should never make personal phone calls to your friends and family unless it is an emergency. Don"t take too long for lunch. What is the lunch-hour rule at your new job? You can find out from your manager or your company"s personnel department. For example, do people eat at their desks or does everyone take a full hour outside the workplace? Never be the first one to leave. Observe how your workmates behave around quitting time. It does no good for you to be eager to leave.

If you do not use your arms of your legs for some time, they become weak. When you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that one"s memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is really his own fault. Not all of us can become very strong or very clever, but all of us can improve our memory by the same means-practice. Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have a better memory than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because people who can"t read or write have to remember things: they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, prices, names, songs and stories, so their memory is exercised all the time. So if you want a good memory, learn from those who cannot read or write: practice remembering.

Jason What I like best is seeing Arsenal win and playing football. If I am feeling sad I will play a football game on my Play Station 2. The best day I have ever had was when I finished first in the 800-metre race at my secondary school. It was a school record, although I didn"t know that at the time. My family makes me happy, too. Antonio My little sister makes me sad because she always tells tales on me to my mum. If I am having a bad day, food cheers me up. I like chili con came and sweet chili crisps. It makes me happy because I want to be big and have lots of energy. I just talk and my friends start laughing-they think I am silly. Ashleigh If I"m having a bad day, knowing that someone is there for me can make me happy. Complainers have a complaint about everything in their life. This usually comes from the fact that they are unsatisfied or angry about their own personal lives. The complainer has a need for their concerns to be accepted. Whether it is in their professional or personal life, the complainer can"t have peace of mind until someone listens to their concerns. They feel dissatisfied and they don"t just want things to change-they want to be heard and understood. The key to effectively dealing with a complainer is by using your active listening skills and trying to understand what their interests and needs are. They want to be heard and acknowledged- not ignored and argued with. Listen to the concerns. It"s not enough sometimes just to fix the problems. The person has a psychological need for someone to acknowledge his or her concerns. Let them get all of these piled frustrations (挫折) out of their system before you address the problem. Listen and accept what they have to say. Encourage them to keep on talking until all these frustrations have been let out. Empathy (同情) with them. Imagine yourself walking around in their shoes and see the situation from their point of view. Empathy is an important tool that you can use to serve cooperation. Use empathetic statements such as, "If l were in your shoes, I"d be really angry, too."Reword their concerns back in your own words. This lets them know that you have been listening and have understood everything correctly. Repeating is also a powerful agreement-building tool. Ask them what they would like you to do. In most cases, you will already know what the person wants, but ask them what they would like you to do because it lets them walk away happy.
