Having one of those days or weeks when everything seems to annoy you? Even if you do nothing about it, your bad mood will probably go away after some time. But with a little effort, you can forget it much faster, often within a day or two. ●Walk it off Exercise is the most popular way to remove bad mood. A person who"s in a bad mood has low energy and high tension. Taking a fast ten-minute walk, or taking some quick exercise can do wonders towards changing that bad mood. ●Tune it out Listening to your favorite music for a while can also make ten- sions go away quickly, because music starts associations with past positive experiences we"ve had. ●Give yourself a pep talk Stop and listen to what"s on your mind. Bad moods are often started by too many negative thoughts. Write them all down on paper, including the pessimistic messages you"ve been giving yourself and then give optimistic answers. ●Avoid things that won"t improve your mood TV may not help much you need to increase your energy level and stimulate your mind. And before you reach for that piece of cake and coffee, think about how _____ are linked. Sugar and caffeine contribute to depressed moods while carbohydrates, such as potatoes and pasta (意大利面食), produce a calming effect in people who have a desire for them.

It"s perfectly normal for young children to suddenly decide they hate everything-even foods they loved yesterday. It"s also common for them to go on what experts call food jags-that is, they want to eat the same few foods over and over again at every meal, while turning up their noses at anything new. "It"s a fear of new things," says Nancy, Hudson, a researcher in University of California, Berkeley. "We think it"s one of those quirks (怪癖) that humans probably developed to protect themselves as mankind came into this world. You don"t try new things because you don"t know if they"re safe." Children like familiar things, whether they"re their beds or their aftemoon tea,so most kids won"t try new foods until they"ve been shown to them many times. Picky (挑剔的) eating can also be a child"s way of showing his independence. This is why forcing a child to eat often makes things worse. Finally, it may seem like your child cannot sit still long enough to eat very much at one sitting because of his short attention. But children are generally good at getting what they need, even if it doesn"t seem like much to you. In any case, you can try to keep your child at the table longer by making mealtime as calm and regular as possible, without too many distractions (分心的事物) like toys, TV, or pets.

To the Editor: I have been reading your newspaper, the Hometown Gazette, for the past two years, ever since I moved to Smithville. We moved here from New York City, so I am accustomed to reading excellent newspapers such as The New York Times. In fact, we still have the Times delivered on Sundays. The entire family enjoys reading the recipes in the paper, as well as the Styles section. The Times is great, but _____. I"ve never read an article that doesn"t contain at least three or four spelling or grammatical errors. For instance, in last week"s issue, you misspelled the word "secretary", used a singular verb with a plural noun, and used "it"s" as a possessive. And that was just in the lead story! In case you never went to elementary school, "it"s" means"it is". It"s not a possessive adjective! It"s a pity that this tiny little hick (土气的) town has only one newspaper, because I"d like to have an alternative to the rag you publish. I find it hard to believe your news stories. If you can"t spell correctly, how can you get your facts right? I"ve been meaning to get this off my chest for some time. Please cancel my subscription. And buy yourself a dictionary. Sincerely, Jane Z. Jones

Most dog owners feel that their dogs are their best friends. Almost everyone likes dogs because they try hard to please their owners. One of my favorite stories is about a dog who wanted his owner to please him. One of my friends has a large German shepherd (牧羊犬) named Jack. Every Sunday afternoon, my friend takes Jack for a walk in the park. Jack likes these long walks very much. One Sunday afternoon, a young man came to visit my friend. He stayed a long time, and he talked and talked. Soon it was time for my friend to take Jack for his walk, but the visitor didn"t leave. Jack became very worried about his walk in the park. He walked around the room several times and then sat down directly in front of the visitor and looked at him. But the visitor paid no attention. He continued talking. Finally, Jack couldn"t stand it any longer. He went out of the room and came back a few minutes later. He sat down again in front of the visitor, but this time he held the man"s hat in his mouth. German shepherds aren"t the only intelligent dogs. Another intelligent dog is a Seeing Eye dog. This is a special dog which helps blind people walk along the streets and do many other things. We call these dogs Seeing Eye dogs because they are the "eye" of the blind people and they help them to "see". Seeing Eye dogs generally go to special schools for several years to leam to help blind people.

Every day we meet people in a number of business and social situations. And the way we meet and greet them creates an impression. It"s important to do so in a proper way, no matter whether you are introducing yourself to someone, or introducing two people to each other. To keep you aware of this, we have gathered tips on how to make a proper introduction. ★ Always stand when making an introduction. When you are seated and someone comes up to greet you, make the effort to stand up. By doing this, you show respect for yourself and for the other person. ★ Always maintain eye contact while making an introduction. Many people are not aware of the value of this simple action. The most important thing to rememher is to say the most important person"s name first. ★ In a situation where rank is unimportant, _____.
