If you think American cooking means opening a package and throwing the contents
题型:不详难度:来源:
If you think American cooking means opening a package and throwing the contents into the microwave oven (微波炉), think again. On the one hand, it’s true that many Americans have cold cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and instant (方便的) dinners. From busy homemakers to working people, many Americans enjoy the convenience (方便) of fast food that can be ready to serve in 10 minutes or less. On the other hand, many Americans realize the importance of cooking skills. Parents — especially mothers — see the importance of training their children — especially daughters. Most Americans think that there’s nothing better than a good home-cooked meal. But with cooking, as with any other skill, good results don’t happen by accident. Probably every cook has his or her own way of cooking. But there are some basic skills that most people follow. For example, baking is a main method (方法) of preparing food in America. For that reason, Americans would find it next to impossible to live without an oven. American cooks pay special attention to the balance of foods, too. In planning a big meal they try to include meat, a few vegetables, some bread and often a dessert. They also like to make sure the meal is colorful. Having several different colors of food on the plate usually makes for a healthy meal. For those who need guidance in their cooking, or for those who have just run out of ideas, recipes are a great help. Recipes list all the ingredients for a dish (generally in the order used), the amount of each to use, and a description of how to put them together. 小题1:This passage mainly tells us that ______.A.Americans like to have several different colors of food on the plate | B.without an oven, Americans find it impossible to live conveniently | C.Americans pay special attention to recipes and nutritious meals | D.Americans usually have fast food, but they pay special attention to cooking as well | 小题2:Many Americans have cold cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and instant dinner because ______.A.they like instant food very much | B.they don’t like cooking at all | C.most American working people are busy and don’t have time to cook | D.fast food is delicious and it usually contains a lot of vitamins | 小题3:By saying “But with cooking, as with any other skill, good results don’t happen by accident”, the author means ______.A.good cooking doesn’t come easily; it needs a lot of practice | B.just like any other skill, cooking may bring good results | C.cooking comes from one’s gift, not through practice | D.cooking can lead to accidents | 小题4:From the passage, we know that ______.A.Americans don’t care about food | B.Americans are not good at cooking because they like to use recipes | C.an oven plays an important role in cooking for Americans | D.while cooking, Americans usually run out of ideas |

A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis 38 are in their early twenties. 39 it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly 40 equal enjoyment.

All over the world, and for many different reasons, there are millions of people who rarely or never eat meat. These people are called vegetarians. To people who eat meat, being a vegetarian may seem like a very strange thing, diets for several different reasons. First, vegetarians have an enormous health advantage. One of the major health problems in modern societies is not too much protein but too much fat, especially in the form of animal fats. Medical evidence suggests that animal fats, including butter, contribute to the development of cholesterol in the human body. High amount of cholesterol seem to be part of the cause of heart disease. Most vegetarians have low level of cholesterol. High amounts of animal fats also seem to lead to certain kinds of cancer, and vegetarians are typically less vulnerable to these cancers than people who eat a lot of meat. Overall, studies comparing the health of vegetarians and meat-eaters show that the meat-eaters are twice as likely to die of heart disease as vegetarians are. Better health is one reason that people choose to become vegetarians. Another reason is religion. Some religions forbid the eating of meat. The largest of these is the Hindu religion, which has about 600 million believers in the world. Although not all Hindus are vegetarian, many are, and there are many believers of other religions such Buddhism and even some Christian religions that also do not eat meat. Many vegetarians do not eat meat simply because they do not like the taste of it. They have no religious or philosophical reasons; they just do not like meat. Another important reason that vegetarians give for not eating meat is the health advantages that were given above. Lastly, there are many people who do not eat meat because they just do not like the idea of killing animals for food. They believe that life, all life, is valuable , and that we do not have to destroy life to feed ourselves when there are other good sources of food. 小题1:According to the passage, people choose to be vegetarians for the following reasons EXCEPT________.A.they want to stay healthy | B.they are too kind to put the idea of killing animals | C.they live in areas where meat supply is not adequate | D.they should not eat meat due to their religious belief | 小题2:Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2 ?A.Vegetarians enjoy a more healthy life than the meat eaters. | B.Heart disease and cancer are caused by large amounts of protein. | C.There are twice as many meat-eaters as vegetarians who die of cancer. | D.There are less health problems in modern society due to advanced medical care. | 小题3:What does “vulnerable” mean in Paragraph 2?A.Having low level of cholesterol. | B.Having high level of cholesterol. | C.Having weak ability to resist diseases and harms. | D.Having strong ability to resist disease and harms. | 小题4:It can be inferred from the passage that __________.A.being a vegetarian may be a very strange thing | B.vegetarians eat meat on some special occasions | C.all vegetarians have reasons for their not eating meat | D.most vegetarians believe that life without meat is happy. |

World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April to mark the anniversary of the founding of WHO in 1948. Each year a theme is selected for World Health Day that highlights a priority area of public health concern in the world. The theme for 2013 is high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes(中风). If left uncontrolled, high blood pressure can also cause blindness, irregularities of the heartbeat and heart failure. The risk of developing these complications is higher in the presence of other risk factors such as diabetes(糖尿病). One in three adults worldwide has high blood pressure and this increases with age, from 1 in 10 people in their 20s and 30s to 5 in 10 people in their 50s. High blood pressure is most common in some low-income countries in Africa, with over 40% of adults in many African countries thought to be affected. However, high blood pressure is both preventable and treatable. In some developed countries, prevention and treatment of it has brought about a reduction in deaths from heart disease. The risk of developing high blood pressure can be reduced by: reducing salt intake; eating a balanced diet; avoiding harmful use of alcohol; taking regular physical activity; keeping a healthy body weight; and avoiding tobacco use. The final and most important goal of World Health Day 2013 is to reduce heart attacks and strokes, which includes as follows: 1.to raise awareness of the causes and consequences of high blood pressure; 2.to provide information on how to prevent high blood pressure 3.to encourage adults to check their blood pressure and to follow the advice of health-care professionals. 小题1:High blood pressure can cause medical problems like_____.A.heart diseases, strokes and blindness | B.strokes, heart failure and diabetes | C.heart attacks, blindness and diabetes | D.heart troubles, strokes and cancers | 小题2:Who are most likely to be affected by high blood pressure?A.Those who are in their 20s | B.Those who are in their 30s | C.Those who are in their 40s | D.Those who are in their 50s | 小题3:Which of the following can NOT reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure?A.Less salt intake | B.Putting on weight | C.Regular exercise | D.No smoking | 小题4:The text is mainly about______.A.the theme for World Health Day 2013 | B.the causes of high blood pressure | C.the treatment of heart attacks and strokes | D.how to reduce the risk of high blood pressure |

As we know, it is common for people to catch a cold in winter and most people believe they know the reason for colds. However, scientists say people have some wrong beliefs about the cause of colds. Many people think that once you get infected by colds, you will not be easy to be attacked by colds for the rest of your life. That’s not the case. There are about 200 different viruses that cause the common cold. You catch a cold because of one kind of them this time, but you might catch a cold next time because of another. Others believe that people get sick just because of the cold weather in winter. That is also wrong. It’s because people tend to stay closer in winter and the cold virus is transmitted from one person to another through handshakes, sneezing, or coughing. While there is no actual cure for the common cold, scientists say there are still a few things you can do to help you. Some experts say honey and chicken soup are effective against colds. Especially honey. There is increasing evidence that it helps shorten the duration of the common cold sometimes even by two to three days particularly in children. Chicken soup also helps reduce the duration of the cold. In addition, if you do have a cold and you don’t feel like eating anything, it’s not going to hurt you but you have to drink a lot and you can drink water or tea because doctors say the water cycle in your bodies helps to cure colds. That’s very important. Though there is more than one way to deal with colds, doctors say the best advice is to continue using whatever works best for you. 小题1:We know from the second paragraph that ______.A.the common cold is caused by only one virus | B.there are people who never catch a cold | C.colds can be caused by different viruses | D.all people are easily attacked by colds | 小题2: The underlined word “transmitted” in the fourth paragraph means “______”.A.passed | B.changed | C.cured | D.caused | 小题3:If you have a cold, you can do the following except ______.A.drinking a lot of water | B.drinking chicken soups | C.eating honey | D.forcing yourself to eat | 小题4: It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A.now scientists have found out practical treatment for colds | B.different people may have different ways to fight against colds | C.working in freezing weather is the main reason for colds | D.colds can be passed from animals to human beings |
