In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. He was out of the sailing track and floating in a lifeboat, alone. His supplies were 36 . His chances of surviving were small. 37 when three fishermen found him seventy-six days later, he was alive — much 38 than he was when he started, but alive. His 39 of how he survived is interesting and attractive. His subtle act — how he 40 to catch fish, how he evaporated sea water to 41 fresh water — is very interesting. But the thing that 42 my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, when it seemed no 43 continuing the struggle, when he was 44 greatly, when his lifeboat was pierced and after more than a week’s struggling with his weak body. He was starved and 45 exhausted. Giving up would have seemed the only sensible choice. When people 46 these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in 47 dangerous circumstances give in or go mad. Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on 48 major difficulties. "I tell myself I can 49 it," wrote Callahan in his book. "Compared to what others have been through, I"m fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over, 50 courage and strength." I wrote that down after I read it 51 it struck me as something important. And I"ve told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed 52 off or when my problems seemed too powerful. And every time I"ve said it, I have always come back to my senses. The truth is, our circumstances are only bad 53 to something better. But others have been through much worse, that is, in comparison with what 54 have been through, you"re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over again, and it will help you 55 the rough spots with a little more perseverance(毅力) .

My six-year-old granddaughter stared at me as if she were seeing me for the first time.”Grandma, you are an antique(古董),”she said. "You are old. Antiques are old. You are my antique." I was not satisfied to let the matter rest there. I took out the Webster"s Dictionary and read the definition(定义)to Jenny.I explained, "An antique is not only old, it"s an object existing since or belonging to earlier times...a work of art... piece of furniture. Antiques are treasured,"I told Jenny as I put away the dictionary. "They have to be handled carefully because they sometimes are very valuable. In order to qualify as an antique, the object has to be at least 100 years old." "I"m only 67,"I renunded Jenny. We looked around the house for other antiques, besides me. There was a desk that was handed down from rone aunt to another and finally to our family. "It"s very old,"I told Jenny.“I try to keep it polished and I show it off whenever I can. You do that with antiques." There was a picture on the wall purchased at a garage sale. It was dated 1867. "Now that"s an antique," I boasted. "Over 100 years old." Of course it was marked up and scratched and not in very good condition. "Sometimes age does that," I told Jenny. "But the marks are good marks. They show living, being around. That"s something to display with pride. In fact, sometimes, the more an object shows age, the more valuable it can become." It was important that I believed this for my own self-esteem. Our tour of antiques continued. There was a vase on the floor. It had been in my house for a long time. I was not certain where it came from but I didn"t buy it new. One thing about antiques, I explained to Jenny, was that they usually had a story. They"d been in one home and then another, handed down from one family to another, traveling all over the place. They"d lasted through years and years. They could have been tossed away, or ignored. or destroyed, or lost. But instead, they survived. For a moment, Jenny looked thoughtful. “l don"t have any antiques but you," she said. Then her face brightened. "Could I take you to school for show and tell?" "Only if I fit into your backpack," I answered. And then Jenny"s antique lifted her up and embraced her in a hug that would last through the years. 小题1:Grandma read the definition of "antique" to Jenny in order to .A.list all the important characteristics of antiques | B.tell Jenny the importance of protecting antiques | C.change Jenny"s shallow understanding of antiques | D.express her disappointment at being called "antique" | 小题2:Which of the following information did grandma convey to Jenny?A.The desk reminded her of her dear relatives. | B.The marks on the picture showed its age and value. | C.There was usually a sad story behind each antique. | D.She planned to buy a new vase to replace the old one. | 小题3:By saying "I don"t have any antiques but you" (Paragraph 7), Jenny meant .A.grandma was a treasure to her | B.antiques were rare and valuable | C.she had nothing but a few possessions | D.grandma and antiques had a lot in common | 小题4:What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.Grandma was too old to lift Jenny up. | B.Jenny had a strong desire for grandma"s love. | C.Jenny was too young to know grandma"s humor. | D.Grandma had a deep long-lasting love for Jenny. | 小题5:What can be the best title for the passage? Last year, I lost my best friend in high school. It seemed that everyone else’s life could just continue on in its 36 way, but mine couldn"t. It’s only after three weeks into a new job that I made a serious mistake. My boss called it “extremely embarrassing” in a company-wide e-mail — which, 11 , he wrote because he felt he needed to explain that what I did was something 12 in the company should ever do. I wish I 13 give a good excuse for what I did. At the very least, I wish I could explain it somehow — 14 it on youth, inexperience or ignorance. Unfortunately, I’m 15 , experienced and I know better. 16 I work with some very kind and compassionate (富于同情心的) people. For the past couple of days many of them have taken time to 17 by my desk and offer comfort, encouragement and support. Some have shared with me similar 18 they have made. Evidently I’m not the only “ 19 ” person here. One of the exchanges I had this week was with Lois, the much-honored, much-respected professional who 20 the desk right next to mine. Lois was completely 21 about her work, and to be honest I was a little nervous about how she would 22 to such an extremely embarrassing incident. As I expected, Lois didn’t pass over the 23 when she saw me the next day. She mentioned it directly, 24 with empathetic consideration. She listened to my 25 . Just as I was ready to express my regrets, she brought my self-pity partly to a(n) 26 . “It happened”, she said, “There’s nothing you can do to 27 that. It happened. But it’s over now. It’s 28 . It’s in the past. You need to let it go, and move on.” And with that she returned her 29 to her work, as if to say, “We’re done here.” I beat myself up for weeks. At such times I need to remember those 30 words: It’s over. It’s done. Let it go. And mostly, move on.
