My 14-year-old brother John dreamed of having a black woolen coat, for at that time this kind of coat was 31 with teenagers, but it could cost several hundred dollars. One day my brother and I went into a shop and saw a black woolen coat at the same time. The coat felt very soft, and it cost only $28. It was 32 but so nice. We looked at each other, saying nothing, but John’s eyes shone.
John tried on the coat and 33 it at once. John wore the coat to school the next day happily and came home with a big 34 . “How do the kids like your coat?” I asked. “They love it,” he said. I started to call him “Lord (老爷) John”.
Over the next few weeks, there seemed to be a 35 in John. He became more polite, more confident and more pleasing. He would 36 his classmates his pens; he would bring his father a cup of tea when he got home; he would 37 a blind man cross the road.
When my mother talked about her son’s change with one of his teachers and wondered what caused it, he said, “It must be his 38 !” One day, in the library, my brother and I happened to meet a friend of my father’s, who had not seen us for a long time. John came up and shook hands with him like a 39 ! The friend said in surprise, “Are you John? You have changed so much!”
What really changed John was his own attitude(态度). 40 you think you are a gentleman or a lady, you can become a perfect one.

When I was nine years old, I used to go to the post office with my mother, sending greeting cards to my aunt in Singapore. To me, these trips were really 16 memories. And receiving mail through a mailbox outside our gate was just as exciting. My small hands could 17 get the mail without using a key! I always couldn’t wait to see how much I was 18 . Oh, a letter! From Singapore! I would run back home and show it to my 19 . When there was a letter for me, I wouldn’t run—I would open it right there.
After my family moved back to Singapore, I 20 going to the post office. Years later, my company sent me to Shanghai, and the post office found me again. Two years ago I celebrated my 21 with five friends on top of the mountain in Longsheng, China. At sunrise we 22 up to a beautiful view from the mountain top. Later in the afternoon, as we were going 23 the mountain and returning from the sunrise viewing place, a 24 shop caught our attention. It only sold noodles, coffee and had a China 25 sign.
We asked the owner if she could really send mail. She happily said yes. It seemed hard to believe, 26 we were at the highest top of the mountain. I picked one postcard out and asked my friends to write 27 a birthday note. We bought a stamp, wrote some notes and gave the shop owner the postcard.
Three weeks later, I arrived home and 28 my mailbox: Hello, postcard! I broke into a big smile.
That birthday postcard attracted me again to the post office and all its delights. I had 29 the post office all these years. Today I 30 send postcards to friends. And every time I am at the post office buying stamps, I cannot help but smile—how one postcard will make its way across the world and brighten up someone’s day.

My name is Ben Mansury. I’m fifteen years old and study in a middle school. In school, I never join in any group discussion or stage (舞台) program. So, I never knew what stage nervousness was.
Our community (社区) has a weekly “Students Ideas” program. About two years ago, I received a(n) 1 from the chairman of our community. He invited me to the “Students Ideas” talk the next morning to speak to the group.
The time between his call to the next morning was like several weeks for me. The whole night, I could not sleep. Many 2 were coming. One of them was to call the chairman, with regret, and tell him that I could not come. But finally, I thought, if I missed this 3 , the community would never invite me again to any of their programs. So, I decided to go.
I reached the hall in time. When my turn came and I started, my heartbeat increased and my mouth went dry. I wasn’t even able to 4 the words on the paper properly. I had no idea where I was standing and what I was talking. That was the day when I 5 my biggest weakness: public speaking.
After I finished, I met with the chairman and 6 what happened to me. He said that this happens to everyone. It is very 7 . He suggested that I should come again the next week.
I 8 a talk carefully. This time when I gave the talk, I was somewhat comfortable but not confident (自信的). Afterwards, I met with the chairman again and told him about the improvement I 9 I had made. He was kind enough to invite me again.
For around one month, I practiced a lot for my talk. This time I was feeling comfortable and both the chairman and my neighbors thought I did a good job.
I learned that everything is 10 if we take the first step, as the saying goes: A journey of thousand miles begins with first step.

Climbing a mountain is hard work. But one step after another finally brings a person to the top. Along

There are many different ways of seeing a town for the first time. One of them is to walk around it,
guide-book in hand. Of course, we may 1 with our guide-books the history and special developments
of a town and get to know them. 2 then, if we take our time and stay in a town for a while, we may
get to know it better. When we look at it as a whole, we begin to have some 3 , which even the best
guide-books do not answer. Why is the town just 4 this, this shape, this plan, this size? Why do its
streets 5 in this particular way, and not in any other way?
Here even the best guide-book fails us. One can"t find in it the information about how a town has
developed to the 6 appearance. It may not describe the original (最初的) design of a town. However,
one may get some ideas of what it 7 to look like by walking around the town. One can also imagine
8 the town was first planned and built. Then one can learn more about in what direction the town 9
to develop.
What is the point of studying towns in this way? For me, it is simply that one gets greater pleasure by
visiting and seeing a town with one"s own eyes. A personal visit to a town may help one better understand
why it is attractive 10 just reading about it in a guide-book.

Being a youth (青年) is one thing, and being a good one is another. A good youth should have these qualities(品质): First of all, health. A healthy body is the best riches (财富). Without it, nothing can be done well. If you are poor in health, you will have to take medicine day after day. Even you can"t work, do sports and so on. Secondly, one must have a kind heart. Always do something for others. Help those in trouble and care about the people around you. If everyone did the same, what a wonderful world it would be! Thirdly, one must have the ability(能力) to work with others. Cooperation (合作) and communication are two important keys to better human relations (关系). Everyone needs friends because no one can live through life alone. Patriotism is also something we should never forget. Patriotism means a love for one"s country. It is one of the highest qualities of humans". Everyone should love his country. But people sometimes think that patriots (爱国者) must be fighters fighting for their country in hard times. That is wrong. A good youth"s work is not only fighting. A good youth will do the things his country asks him to do. I think a good youth of today should also have some training in art. If everyone can enjoy art and be able to make more of it for others, then people will live better and enjoy more.

They come little by little without one being aware of (意识到) their danger. School boys first pick up little bad habits in the school and on the street. When they can"t write their lessons, they copy from their schoolmates. If they see bigger boys smoking, they also want to learn to smoke. If they see their friends gambling (赌博), they want to gamble. When they get bigger, the habits become stronger and stronger, so that they can no longer get rid of (摆脱, 除掉) them. From copying, they learn to steal, from gambling, they learn to cheat (欺骗). At last they become distrusted (不信任) by everybody. How necessary it is that we get rid of the bad habits in the beginning.

There are many things we need to know that we don"t learn at school. For example, if we want to use our money wisely, we need to shop carefully. We need to know how to compare (比较) the prices of things in different shops. We need to be able to compare the quality of different brands (商标). We need to know how to make reasonable choices when we shop. Knowing how to make such choices is a life skill. And we need these skills if we are to lead useful and happy lives. Some of these choices are small. For example, will I take an apple for lunch or a pear? Will I get the bus to school today or will I walk? Will I wear the red T-shirt or the blue one to the movies? Other choices are more important. For example, will I eat healthy food for lunch or will I eat junk food because it"s delicious? Will I work hard in all my classes or will I only work hard in the classes I enjoy? We make decisions like this every day. Making the wrong choices can result in unhappiness. We have to realize that the choices we make can affect the rest of our lives. Just as importantly, our choices can also affect other people. The next time you decide to waste time in class, play a joke on someone or talk loudly at the movies, think this: Who else does your choice affect?

Once in a Lifetime Twice As Good I can already hear firecrackers in the distance as the New Year begins. It is time to celebrate 2005. This is a brand new year for those of us who follow the Western calendar. Of course, according to the lunar calendar, the firecrackers will not sound for the New Year until February when the year of Rooster (公鸡) officially begins. I feel lucky to live in Shanghai because I can celebrate two different New Years. I am looking forward to learning about the traditions of Chinese New Year. At home in Canada, everyone in my family writes down their predictions (预言) for the next year. Then we hide them away for an entire (完整的) year (no peeking!) and read them on New Year"s Day. I didn"t predict that I would be living in Shanghai, China this year and if I had, I would never have predicted that I would be enjoying life here so much. (Better luck next year with my predictions!) I think I"ll play it safe this year and predict that many new buildings will go up in my neighbourhood in Gubei! That is a prediction that is sure to come true, here in the fastest-growing city in the world! Another tradition at the New Year is writing down all those resolutions (决心). So here I go! I have some plans for the New Year that I intended (打算) to keep. For example, I plan to work much harder on learning Chinese. It is not an easy language, but living here gives me a once in a lifetime opportunity to really learn it. So, I plan to apply myself, yes I do. I will use a new Chinese phrase every day when I am out in the city. My second resolution is to get rid of the habit of procrastination (拖延)! I am one of those people who always leave things to the last minute and that has got to change! No more staying up late to finish my homework at the last minute. Let"s not call it procrastination in China, but a month"s grace period on New Year" resolutions. Whatever, Happy 2005!

Everybody wishes to be successful in life. Nobody wants to 1 in work or study. Success brings happiness 2 to the person who succeeds 3 to his family members or friends. It is said that success can be achieved (完成) through diligence (勤奋的). So according to this we can say, "where there"s a 4 , there"s a 5 ." Although 6 is always difficult to start, we can also be successful if we don"t 7 . Devotion is also important 8 success. Devotion means, "Put your heart 9 the things you do." The gardeners" work is an example. They take 10 of the fruit trees every day-water them, cut the branches, so that they can bear (结出) delicious fruit. So in the same way success can only be achieved through hard work.

Someone says, "Time is money." But I think time is more 1 than money. Why? Because when money is spent, we can make it again. However, 2 time is gone, it"ll never 3 . That is 4 we mustn"t waste time. It goes without saying that the 5 is usually limited (有限的). Even a second is very important, we should make full use of our time to do 6 useful. But it is a pity that there are lots of people who do not know the importance of time. They spend their limited time smoking, drinking, and 7 . They do not know that wasting time means wasting part of their own 8 . In a word, we should save time. We shouldn"t 9 today"s work for tomorrow. Remember we have no time to 10 .
