from the outside world. After that she could not see or hear and soon she couldn"t even talk. She was
blind, deaf, and dumb.
     Just before Helen Keller"s seventh birthday, Anne Sullivan , a teacher, came to help her. Anne
Sullivan did a lot of work. With the help of Miss Sullivan , Helen learned how to swim and ride a horse.
      Later Helen went to a school for blind children. She worked and studied very hard. She wrote many
books and became a famous writer. Her first and famous book was The Story of My Life. People
around the world enjoy reading her books. Helen died at the age of 88 in 1968.

阅读理解。     Florence Nightingale was born in a rich family in England. When she was young, she took lessons in
music and drawing, and read many great books. She also traveled a lot with her parents.    
     As a child she felt that visiting sick people was both a duty and a pleasure. She enjoyed helping
them.    
     At last she decided that she was going to be a nurse.  But her father said, "Nursing isn" t the right job for a lady. "    
     "Then I will make it so," she smiled.    
     And she went to learn nursing in Germany and France. When she returned to England, Florence started a nursing home for women.    
     In the Crimean War in 1854, she went with a group of thirty-eight nurses to the front hospitals. What
they saw there was terrible.    
     Florence used her own money and some from her friends to buy clothes, beds, medicines and food for the men. Her only pay was the smiles of" the wounded (受伤的) soldiers.  But they were more than
enough for this kind woman.    
     Florence died at ninety. She tried to serve others through her work as a nurse all her life.        Yao Ming was born in China in 1980. In his last season with the Shanghai Sharks, he scored 32.4
points per game. Now the big man from China is helping the Houston Rockets in the NBA. He is the

coughed and he couldn"t breathe. Working in a bakery (面包房)  when you are allergic to

     But Arnold stayed with the National Biscuit Company for ten years. He was a businessman and he
helped them improve production. At last his health problems became too serious. He left and formed
his own company.
