People show their personalities in their clothes, their cars and their homes. Because we might choose some foods to “tell” people something about us, our diets can also be an expression of our personalities. For example, some people eat mainly gourmet (供美食家享用的)foods, such as caviar (鱼子酱) and lobster (龙虾), and they eat only in expensive restaurants. They know about the “better things in life”. People can eat many different kinds of foods, but some people choose not to eat meat. Vegetarians(素食主义者) often have more in common(相同) than just their diets. Their personalities might be the same too. For example, vegetarians in the US and Canada may be creative(创造性的) people, and they might not enjoy competitive(竞争性的) sports or jobs. They worry about the health of the world, and they are probably strongly opposed (反对的) to wars(战争). Some people eat mostly fast food. One study shows that many fast-food eaters have a lot in common with one another, but they are very different from vegetarians. They are competitive and good at business. They are also usually in a hurry. Many fast-food eaters might not agree with this description(描述) of their personalities, but it is a common picture of them. What is Your Food Personalities

Taking away a city’s rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can"t eat or use. If we kept these things we would soon have a mountain of rubbish. In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of city to a dump. Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs and other places. To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you’d never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump. In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called humus(腐殖质), which looks like black earth. Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, wear strange hairstyle and even fight. Basically (基本上) , they are often taking risks. Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong? Not really. So what’s the reason? According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is “peer influence”. As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs. In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely. Why do peers have such a big influence on teens’ behavior? As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a weak brake (刹车). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident. But the good news is that a violent (暴力的) teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. “They get more self-controlled.” 小题1:What does the underlined word “irrational” in the 2nd paragraph mean?A.Quick. | B.Crazy. | C.Careful. | D.Correct. | 小题2: Why are teenagers often taking risksaccording to the text?A.They like difficult tasks. | B.They don’t care about costs. | C.They are too young to tell right from wrong. | D.They care a lot about what their peers think of them. | 小题3:How does Laurence explain the influence of peer influence on teens’ behavior?A.By using a metaphor (比喻). | B.By giving examples. | C.By presenting research findings. | D.By performing an in-depth analysis (分析). | 小题4:According to the text, with peers around them, teenagers tend to (倾向于) ______.A.use more self-control | B.become more careful about what they do | C.perform better than when they are alone | D.focus more on short-term benefits(利益) | 小题5:What can we learn from the text?A.Teenagers are easy to have traffic accidents. | B.Peer influence is bad on teenagers. | C.Most of the teenagers become less violent when they grow up. | D.Teenagers shouldn’t spend all the free time with their friends. |

What is the strongest part of your body? Your head? Bones? It’s your teeth! There is a special thing called enamel (牙釉质) in teeth. It is the hardest thing in the human body and keeps bacteria (细菌) away. However, teeth are vulnerable (易受伤害的) to problems and disease. September 20 is National Teeth-loving Day in China. Let’s pay attention to the health of our teeth. Tooth (1) are (1) around the world. Most children and young adults have tooth decay (龋齿). A study published on China Health Monthly magazine this year showed that 40.74 percent of a sample (抽样) of 1,306 Chinese students under age 15 had decayed teeth. (2)Food that is rich in sugar increases the risk of tooth decay. After you eat, bacteria go crazy over the sugar on your teeth, like ants at a picnic. The bacteria turn sugar into acids (酸) that eat away at tooth enamel. This cause holes in your teeth. Another common problem is crooked teeth (龅牙). When your new teeth begin to grow and the old teeth haven’t fallen out, there isn’t enough space for the new ones. This causes crooked teeth. Don’t worry. Here are some ways to keep your teeth healthy. Brush at least twice a day – in the morning and before bedtime. Learn to use dental floss (牙线). The floss gets rid of food that’s hidden where your toothbrush can’t get it. Visit a dentist. He or she can check if you have any dental problems and help you clean your teeth. Pay attention to what you eat. It is better to eat lots of fruits and vegetables instead of fries and drink water instead of soda. Wear braces (牙套) to make your teeth straight and beautiful.
