Stone is all around us. Stone is usually very hard, it can also be soft. Stones have many uses. In some , artists carve (雕刻) beautiful things out of soft stones, because they can be shaped easily. In ancient times, people carved persons or animals out of soft stones, which could be carried along with. While in some European countries, statues (雕塑) are carved hard stones and they do not change easily. In summer, the hot sun on these statues and in winter the snow falls on them, but they remain beautiful. Stone is strong and long-lasting. So, it is enough for buildings. A house built of stone does not catch fire as easily as made of wood. Some stones are coloured, so they make the look wonderful. People can also get a fire with stones. Besides, some kinds of stones can be used to jewellery (珠宝). We’ve found stones are really amazing.

The common Chinese greeting of “Ni chi le ma?” may soon be replaced by a new greeting: “Have you cleaned your plate?”
Over the Spring Festival holiday there was a big effort to get to curb their habit of ordering too much food in restaurants because a lot of that food ended up being wasted. Holiday eaters were urged to “clean their plates “and ______ to take leftover food home in “doggy bags.” The impetus behind the campaign was the surprising government statisticthat over 200 billion Yuan is spent every year food that ends up in the garbage bin. And in the middle of all this waste, statistics show that 128 people are living below the poor line and going hungry. The “clean your plate” campaign is part of a worldwide effort to stop delicious food from being wasted. The United Nations discover $1 trillion(yes, that’s a very big number) worth of food is wasted each year. of that is lost during food production and transportation, ___ an important percentage is attributed to waste by people. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has started a campaign called “Think. Eat. Save.” people aware of the problem. Chinese actress Fan Bingbing is an ambassadorfor UNEP and she encouraged people to upload of their “clean plates “to show their support for the program. Thousands of people replied and showed that they had a clear conscience to their full stomachs. Xi Jinping, the new Chinese president, is urging people to be less wasteful and he told Party members to cut back on extra vagant holiday dinners and to be when spending the people’s money. For some, though, Xi Jinping’s and Fan Bingbing’s advice don’t go far enough. Yuan Longping, a farming , caused a movement by saying that wasting food should be treated a crime. If not a crime, food is certainly a sin and it goes against what Xi Jinping calls, “the Chinese tradition of being hard-working and saving.”Having a “clean plate” is just a traditional and responsible thing to do. Have you cleaned your plate?

When you cough or sneeze, you’d better turn your head away from others and cover your mouth with the full part of your hand. And then, you should say, “Excuse me.” This seems so simple, but it is surprising how many kids have never been told to do this. Actually, I notice adults all the time who cough and sneeze in public without placing a hand over the mouth. One important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough on their hands, they should wash their hands as soon as possible. If not, they will be passing those germs(细菌)along to everything and everyone they touch. If you come to a door and someone is following you, hold the door. If the door opens by pulling, pull it open, stand to the side, and allow the other person to pass. After a few weeks of seeing kids try to get through doors in the school and watching them enter restaurants as the door hit other people, I knew I had to discuss the problem with my students. Teaching them small acts of kindness, such as letting someone else go through a door first as they hold it open, may seem unimportant, but it can go a long way toward helping students realize how to be polite and think others. Once they’ve been told, they’re halfway there. When we have to go up moving stairs, we will stand to the right. That will give others who are in a hurry a choice of walking up the left-hand side of the moving stairs. When we are going to enter a lift, the underground, of a doorway, we will wait for others to exit before we enter. After college when I moved to London, I was surprised at how polite everyone was in the subways. I was even more touched when I traveled to Japan. In both places, people made effort to make way for others. On moving stairs, everyone stood to the right and walked to the left. On lifts, everyone would stand over to the side and allow others to exit before they would begin to enter. 小题1:When you cough or sneeze, you should _________.A.touch everything | B.cover your mouth | C.point out to the kids | D.pass the germs to others | 小题2:If you come to a door and someone is following you, you’d better ________.A.hold the door | B.pass through | C.close the door | D.stand to the side | 小题3:From the passage we can know the writer is a _________.A.doctor | B.traveler | C.parent | D.teacher | 小题4:The passage is mainly about _________.A.the rules of behavior in public | B.the ways of communication | C.the acts of kindness among people | D.the knowledge of social life |
