阅读理解。     A new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop
depression (抑郁症) as young adults.
The researchers used a national long-term survey of healthy young teenagers of about 13-16 to find
out the relationship between media (媒体) use and depression. They based their findings on more than
4000 young teenagers who were not depressed when the survey began in 1995.
As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they
watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio.
Here was the result. The young people spent five and a half hours a day using media and more than 2
hours of that was spent watching TV.
Seven years later, in 2001, more than 7% of the young people had signs of depression. The average
age at that time was 21. Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead author
of the new study. He says every extra hour of television meant an 8% increase in the chances of developing
signs of depression.
The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies,
video games or radio. But the study did find that young men were more likely than young women to develop
depression given the same amount of media use.
Doctor Primack says the study did not find out if watching TV causes depression directly. But one
possibility, he says, is that it may take time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like
sports and social activities. It might also prevent a person from sleeping well, he says, and that could have
an influence.
The study was just published in the Archives of General Psychiatry.
In December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy
lives. Researchers from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy
spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely
to be socially active, to read, attend social services and to vote.

If you go to a fast food restaurant, you will probably see a lot of teenagers. Today, many teenagers are
overweight, and this is because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers are keen about food with a lot of fat,
oil, salt and sugar. People call this kind of food "junk food".
But bad eating habits go beyond fast food. We find many teenagers eat unhealthily. Some don"t have
breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don"t have a proper meal for lunch. In a recent
survey at one school, scientists found that over two thirds of the students didn"t follow a healthy diet. They
didn"t like vegetables, and many of them didn"t like to eat fruits. They preferred to eat food with a lot of salt,
sugar, or fat.
Parents today also worry about their children"s diet. Some doctors give the following advice:
Teenagers shouldn"t eat too much junk food.
Teenagers shouldn"t eat food with too much salt. Salt can cause high blood pressure in the future.
Teenagers should eat food without much fat, oil and sugar.
Teenagers need to eat some fruits and vegetables every day. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins
(维生素) and have little fat.
Teenagers need to drink more milk. Milk will help their bones grow.
Teenagers need to eat breakfast every day. It is good for their body and mind.

Gao Xiaosong, who is a famous musician, movie director and the writer of the famous song My Deskmate,
has been sent to jail (监狱) and will stay there for six months for drunk driving.
"I"ve nothing to say for myself and I"m willing to be punished (惩罚)," he said when he was standing in the
court. "What I want to say is that I feel sorry for what I"ve done. I thought alcohol (酒精) could bring me
freedom but never realized drunk driving could take away others" freedom. And now I"ve lost my own freedom
because of drinking. I"ll obey the new road safety rules and I want to be a life-long volunteer in persuading
(劝说) others not to drive after drinking."
Anyone who drives after drinking doesn"t think much of human life. If Gao had cared, he would have left his
car parked outside the restaurant and took a taxi home, and he would have thought about a road killer he would
become. It"s fair to say that his behavior can not be excused in modern society. Gao may not have killed anyone, but by choosing to drive a car while under the influence of alcohol, he and the large number of others who do
the same have made the dangerous decision that may possibly hurt other people.

The number of women over 65 who are still working has increased by more than a third in the past ten
years. Do these women really like working? Women live longer than men, so they have to save more money
for their retired (退休的) lives. Women earn (挣) less, so they save less. And they work few years because
they have to look after children or elderly parents.

Every year thousands of people get hurt or die when they are crossing the road. Most of these people are
old people and children. Old people often get hurt or die because they can"t see or hear very well. Children
usually meet with accidents because of their carelessness. They forget to look and listen before they cross the
road.
How can we lessen (减少) traffic accidents? All of us must obey the traffic rules. For the drivers, they
shouldn"t drive too fast. If they drive too fast, it will be very difficult to stop the cars in a very short time. For
the pedestrians (行人), it"s very important to be careful when they are walking on the road. Therefore, when
we walk across the road, we must try to walk along the pavements. We must stop and look both ways before
crossing the road. Look left first, next look right, and then look left again. Only when we are sure that the road
is clear can we cross it. The right way to cross the road is to walk quickly. It"s not safe to run. If people run
across the road, they may fall down. Teens should try to help children, old people or blind people to cross the
road, and never play in the street.
1. Which of the following is NOT the right way to cross the road?
A. Stop and look both ways.
B. Run quickly.
C. Make sure that the road is clear.
D. Walk quickly.
2. Why do most old people often get hurt or die when they are crossing the road?
A. Because they are not careful.
B. Because they forget to look and listen.
C. Because they can"t see or hear very well.
D. Because they often run across the road.
3. As a student, you can _____ to try to lessen traffic accidents.
A. help children to cross the road
