That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring    at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was    learning my lines. I was having trouble    my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously    giving up both acting and San Francisco.    had become too much for me.
As I walked down    streets under tall buildings, I felt very    and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned   , half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty.    I saw was a shining streetlight.   , the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run fast. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to    I’d heard the noise.    I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about    the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice    from the inside. “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an     look in his eyes. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked,    a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 a. m. by the time I got into bed. I    get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I    had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place    people were willing to help each other.

A. With opening night only a week away,可知作者在剧院排练,practice强调提高技巧的训练,而exercise强调习题,所以答案选C。
固定短语have trouble doing sth “做某事有困难”,故排除A、D选项。
Think of “想起,认为”;think about “考虑”; think over“仔细考虑”;think out“想出”。
A. 由文章末段….had gotten back some enjoyment of city life可以判断作者打算放弃都市生活,所以A选项正确。
A. 根据下文The street was empty,可以判断D选项正确。
give in 让步;give up放弃。
hold up 举起; hold on 坚持。
A. 远至,据;B.和。。。一样好C.一。。。

Rachel Carson, born in rural Pennsylvania in 1907, had a great impact on the environment. Carson earned a master’s degree in zoology in 1932. It was as a writer and not as a research scientist, however, that she made her mark, sharing her view that human beings are just one element in a larger natural order.
In the articles on natural history Carson wrote for various publications, she expressed dry facts in poetic and persuasive language. She wrote five books. Two of them, The Sea Around Us and The Edge of the Sea, have been called “biographies of the ocean.”
Carson also made the world aware of how scientific discoveries can harm as well as help living things. In her best-selling book Silent Spring, Carson challenged the profligate use of chemical pesticides by large agricultural and government organizations. She was the first to detail how the pesticide DDT had entered the food chain and damaged populations of bald eagles, falcons, and brown pelicans by causing the shells of their eggs to become so thin that they could not withstand the weight of the parent bird.
Carson died of cancer in 1964. Today, the Rachel Carson Council collects and disseminates (散播) information on pesticide-related issues. In 1970, the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge, a large area of salt marsh and freshwater habitat in Maine, was dedicated to her memory.

When was the last time someone unexpectedly did something nice for you ? Not someone you knew, but a total stranger? It’s happened to me a few times, but two instances really stand out.
A few years ago, I was dining in a restaurant with a friend who kept talking about himself, completely not aware of the fact that I was sitting there in misery. It wasn’t my friend’s talks that made me suffer. I was recovering from a broken heart, and just sitting down to dinner reminded me of my last relationship. I could have burst into tears right there at the table.
When we picked up the check, the waitress said, “ Your meal was already paid for .” My friend and I didn’t have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man I saw out of the corner of my eye. He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar, had a beer, and stayed for maybe ten minutes. The waitress said, “Yes, the gentleman in white paid for you .” It felt like an angel was saying “I see you, honey. It’s going to be okay.”
Just last year, I was running a half-marathon. With just 1 mile to go, I was out of gas. Runners call it “hitting the wall”. I thought I couldn’t move another inch. Out of nowhere, a stranger came up to me and said, “What’s your name, sweetie? Jennifer? Okay, Jennifer, let’s go! Come on! It’s just around the corner! You can do it!” And he ran with me until I picked up my pace. I found him at the finish line to thank him for the encouragement only to learn he wasn’t even supposed to be in the race that day.
I still shake my head when I think of these momentary angels that came to me at my point of need. Do you have any experiences like these?

When Mary Moore began her high school in 1951, her mother told her, “Be sure and take a typing course so when this show business thing doesn"t work out, you"ll have something to rely on.” Mary responded in typical teenage fashion. From that moment on, "the very last thing I ever thought about doing was taking a typing course," she recalls.
The show business thing worked out, of course. In her career, Mary won many awards. Only recently, when she began to write Growing Up Again, did she regret ignoring her mom, “I don"t know how to use a computer,” she admits.
Unlike her 1995 autobiography(自传), After All, her second book is less about life as an award-winning actress and more about living with diabetes (糖尿病). All the money from the book is intended for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization she serves as international chairman. “I felt there was a need for a book like this,” she says. “I didn"t want to lecture, but I wanted other diabetics to know that things get better when we"re self-controlled and do our part in managing the disease.”
But she hasn"t always practiced what she teaches. In her book, she describes that awful day, almost 40 years ago, when she received two pieces of life-changing news. First, she had lost the baby she was carrying, and second, tests showed that she had diabetes. In a childlike act, she left the hospital and treated herself to a box of doughnuts (甜甜圈). Years would pass before she realized she had to grow up ---again---and take control of her diabetes, not let it control her. Only then did she kick her three-pack-a-day cigarette habit, overcome her addiction to alcohol, and begin to follow a balanced diet.
Although her disease has affected her eyesight and forced her to the sidelines of the dance floor, she refuses to fall into self-pity. “Everybody on earth can ask, "why me?" about something or other,” she insists. “It doesn"t do any good. No one is immune (免疫的) to heartache, pain, and disappointments. Sometimes we can make things better by helping others. I"ve come to realize the importance of that as I"ve grown up this second time. I want to speak out and be as helpful as I can be.”

“Yes, right before she died. I brought it home last year and made some       ,” she said. “I’m still working on it. See, this is        I’ve done so far.”
I looked at it more closely. She had made straight a crooked line. At the center of the quilt, she had stitched a piece of cloth        those words: “My mother made many quilts. She didn"t get all line       . But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.”
