It was a normal Saturday morning, and everyone was in a good mood. The year was 2000 and I was then only 6 years old. I remember it like it was yesterday though. We were just eating breakfast when we received a phone call. We received phone calls all the time, so it was nothing new to me. However, this phone call was an important one. I soon heard and saw my mother crying on the couch(沙发)with my father comforting her. My brother, sister, and I didn"t know what had happened, as they had not told us yet. Later, I was told that my grandfather was in the hospital because he had a heart attack. I did not know what to think. I had never heard of a heart attack, but I figured (认为) that it must be serious if he was in the hospital. My grandfather and grandmother lived far away from us and we did not get to see them often. It was a long trip. My mother rushed to the hospital while my father stayed at home with my brother, sister and me. I do not think my young sister was really understanding it all yet. My mother returned a little later with bad news. My grandfather had died before she got there. I was speechless. I had loved my grandfather greatly. He was the one who taught me how to fish and enjoy the outdoors.

If I left the decisions up to my daughter, she"d never play competitive sports. In her first season of forced sports, when she was four years old, she cried every time she kicked the soccer ball. She stopped on the way from the parking lot to the soccer field, wailing that her legs hurt. And worse, she cried, "I"m sweating!" A few years have passed, and she just completed her fourth soccer season. She"s starting her second year of softball. Sports trophies (奖杯) line her window platform. I learned from the years of football, soccer and baseball in my son"s youth that kids need to experience being on a team, and they might not beg you to sign them up. You might have to force it on them. They need to learn about sacrificing, and about commitment. If you read parenting articles out there, you"ll find plenty of folks who shy away from competitive sports because they want their kid to always feel like a winner. I don"t know what kind of idyllic (田园的) life these parents must be leading, but in my world, I"m thinking I need to sign my kids up for something that will teach them about life"s devastating disappointments. Hence, I think my daughter picked up some good life lessons when her team lost almost every game in the last season. Sometimes life is like that. Sometimes you get a bad call, the people on your team suck, you"re tired and don"t feel like playing, the coach is mean to you, someone scratches your face and steals the ball. And the next week, you put on your uniform, and try your best.

Introductory Chemistry was taught at Duke University for many years by professor Bonk. One year, two guys took the class and did pretty well on all the quizzes and mid-terms. They each had a solid A. These two friends were so confident in going into the final that the weekend before finals week, despite the Chemistry final being on Monday, they decided to go to the University of Virginia to party with some friends. They had a great time there. However, with their hangovers (宿醉) and tiredness, they overslept all day Sunday and didn"t make it back to Duke until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they found professor Bonk after the final and explained to him how they missed the final. They told him they went up to the University of Virginia for the weekend and had planned to come back in time to study, but they had a flat tire on the way back and didn"t have a spare. So they were late getting back to campus. Bonk thought this over and agreed that they could take the final the following day. The two guys, happily and relieved, studied that night and went in the next day at the time that Bonk had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet. He told them to begin. They looked at the first problem which was something simple about solution (溶解). It was worth 5 points. "Cool," they thought, "this is going to be an easy final". They then turned the page. They were unprepared, however, for what they saw on it. The question contained only two words: (95 points) Which tire?

When I come across a good article while reading newspapers, I often want to cut and keep it. But just as I am about to do so, I find the article on the 1 side is more interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to 2 in good health, or 3 about how to behave and conduct oneself in society. If I cut the front article, the opposite one is likely to 4 damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text 5 the title. Therefore, the scissors (剪刀) would 6 before they start, 7 halfway done when I find out the 8 result. Sometimes two things are to be done at the same time, both worth your 9 . You can only take up one of them; the other has to wait to be 10 up. But you know the future is unpredictable (不可预测的)-the changed situation may not allow you to do what is left 11 . Thus you are 12 in a difficult position and feel sad. How come that nice chances and brilliant 13 should gather around all at once? It may happen that your life 14 greatly on your preference of one choice to the other. In fact that is what 15 is like: we are often 16 with the two opposite sides of the thing which are both desirable like a newspaper cutting. It often occurs that our attention is drawn to one thing only 17 we get into another. The 18 may be more important than the latter and give rise to a divided mind. I 19 remember a philosopher"s remarks that "When one door shuts, another opens in life". So a casual (随意的) 20 may not be a bad one.
