Alice always wanted to be a singer. Music was the most important thing in her life. To tell you the truth, she took lessons for years, and practiced every day, but her voice didn"t improve. In fact, it didn"t get better; it just got louder. Her teacher gave up in the end and stopped the lessons, but Alice refused to give in. One day she decided to give a concert and invited her teacher to attend. The teacher was very worried about what to say after the concert. She knew it would be terrible and it was. She didn"t want to tell a lie, but she didn"t want to hurt Alice"s feelings, either. At last, she got an idea and went backstage to greet her student. After filling the car with gas, I continued driving to the airport. The roads were quite bumpy (颠簸) and I noticed that the highway department was doing some reconstruction, although some parts of the road hadn"t been completed yet. I drove on a completed part of the highway that was flat and smooth for one and a half hours. Afterwards, the road became a little rough and bumpy again, and there weren"t even any street lights on the side of the road. We started driving in the early hours of the morning and I think because it was really early and drivers on the road were tired so they couldn"t concentrate (集中注意力). I saw three separate car accidents during the journey. When starting driving in an area that I didn"t know well, I let the other car lead the way and I followed behind them. As we were driving inside a tunnel, I suddenly saw a truck hit the side of the wall, rebound (反 弹), then turned back onto the middle of the road. The truck nearly hit the car in front of us. I think the driver of the truck must have fallen asleep at the wheel otherwise this wouldn"t have happened. He nearly caused a car accident. I was driving behind the cars and I saw everything happen in front of me. The incident gave me such a fright that it immediately woke me up. In my mind I kept telling myself that I was driving a car and that I had to stay alert (清醒). To my relief, all the members in the other car were okay because if that truck really did hit the car traveling in front of us, I don"t think I"d be able to make it back to Hong Kong. Not only that, all the passengers in the other car would have to go to hospital. |
1. From the first paragraph we know the road _____. |
[ ] |
A. was bumpy all the way to the airport B. was blocked by three car accidents C. was bright because of the street lights D. was being repaired |
2. There were car accidents during the writer"s journey mainly because _____. |
[ ] |
A. the traffic was heavy in the morning B. there were no street lights C. sleepy drivers couldn"t fix their attention D. the road was very bumpy |
3. What can we know from the passage? |
[ ] |
A. An accident happened inside the tunnel. B. The truck driver may have fallen asleep when driving. C. The writer"s car was almost hit by the truck. D. All the passengers in the other car were sent to the hospital. |
4. When the incident happened, the writer was _____. |
[ ] |
A. sleepy B. asleep C. wide awake D. attentive |
