小题5:A。 小题9:A。 小题11:A。 小题13:A。 由more and more trees are cut down可推知:此处指森林(forests)可能消失。 小题17:A。 19:C。work out a plan

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job. 1 So, you have to give a speech and you are terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank Goodness, it’s over. I’m just not good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.” Cheer up! 2 Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of your time doing your research. Then spend plenty of your time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they help you make your points more clearly. 3 Don’t talk over their heads, and don’t talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness. Just remember: Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief. 4 And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience. If you follow these simple steps, you will see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You’re not convinced yet? 5 A.It doesn’t to be that bad. | B.Take several deep breaths before your speech. | C.This article gives some advice on how to give good speech. | D.Say what you have to say and then stop. | E. The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it. Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world. Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution. The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time. 小题1:_______, our world is becoming much smaller. A.Because of the rise in pollution | B.Thanks to science development | C.Because the earth is being polluted day and night | D.Because the earth is blown away by the wind every year | 小题2:Hundreds of years ago, life was __________ it is today. A.much easier than | B.as easy as | C.much harder than | D.as hard as | 小题3: Pollution comes in many ways. We can even hear it. Here “it” means _______. A.rubbish(垃圾) | B.noise pollution | C.air pollution | D.water pollution | 小题4:Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution because _______. A.it makes much noise | B.it makes us angry more easily | C.it makes our rivers and lakes dirty | D.it’s bad for all living things in the world | 小题5:Which of the following is NOT true? A.Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. | B.The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world population does. | C.The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people living on the earth. | D.If people could go to work by bus or bike instead of car or motorbike, it would be helpful in fighting against the problem of SO2. |

Bushwick is a tough place to grow up. This part of Brooklyn, in New York City, has a lot of crime. More than half of its 100,000 residents rely on aid from the government. Only 50% of students at Bushwick High School graduate in four years. Some people might say, “We should help these poor kids who have so many challenges.” But Malaak Compton-Rock looks at the teens in Bushwick and says, “ Go to help kids who have even bigger challenges than you do.” She believes that once young people see the power they have to make things better, they can handle their own problems more easily. So her service group, the Angel Rock Project, took 30 Bushwick kids to Soweto, in South Africa, to help poor families there. Soweto is a township outside the city of Johannesburg. The effort, called Journey for Change, aims to show that any kid can change the world. “Kids in Bushwick face pressure to drop out of school or become involved in gangs and drugs.” Says Compton-Rock. “We want them to live a life of purpose and service.” In Soweto, many parents have died of AIDS, a deadly disease. When that happens, a grandparent or a child must lead the family. The Bushwick volunteers helped such families. They tended vegetable gardens, cared for babies and bought groceries. “The saddest thing was when we visited an orphanage (孤儿院) and I helped a little boy who had been abandoned because he had HIV, the virus that causes AIDS,” says Queen Clyde, 12. “It‘s been good to be on this trip. But what’s also important is what we do when it’s finished. That’s what counts.” “ I never appreciated what I had until I saw some people who had nothing,” says Sadara Lewis, 12 “It’s really changed my attitude. I want to make a difference.” The trip was two weeks long. But the kids, aged 12 to 15, will spend all year speaking about their experience, fund-raising and more. 小题1:What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?A.Bushwick is the poorest place in New York City. | B.Bushwick still needs more care from the government. | C.It is children who suffer most in New York City. | D.Children in Bushwick are living in a bad situation. 2:In Compton-Rock’s opinion, the Bushwick kids __________.A.have few challenges | B.should be kept out of schools | C.can learn to deal with their own problems by helping others | D.are living much better than people in Africa | 小题3:Compared to Bushwick kids, some children in Soweto __________.A.may have bigger challenges | B.receive no care from the government | C.are much more independent | D.are able to lead the family | 小题4:According to the passage, “Journey for Change” can be best seen as the saying “________”.A.God helps those who help themselves | B.saying and doing are two things | C.one stone kills two birds | D.a friend in need is a friend indeed | 小题5:From the passage we know that __________.A.there are few students in Bushwick High School | B.the trip to Soweto will have a long influence in spite of its short time. | C.most children are suffering from AIDS in Soweto | D.kids with HIV will be abandoned in Soweto |

Recently I had completely changed my views about life after a talk with one of my friends. He told me despite being 31 , he was happy and 32 that it was because of something he saw in Thailand. A few years ago he was 33 feeling sad and was touring Thailand. He said right in front of his very eyes, he saw a mother 34 her child"s right hand with a knife. The helpless 35 in the mother"s eyes and the scream of the 36 four-year-old child still remained in his mind. The 37 mother made the child handicapped (disabled) 38 he could go out on the streets to beg. 39 by the scene, he dropped a small piece of bread he was eating. And almost at once, several children 40 around this small piece of bread covered with sand, 41 bits from one another. It was the 42 reaction of hunger. He then went to the nearest bakery and bought every single loaf of bread. 43 he gave out the bread to the children (mostly handicapped), he 44 cheers and bows from these 45 children. For the first time in his life, he understood 46 people could give up their 47 for a loaf of bread. He came to 48 how fortunate he was to be able to have a sound body, have a job, have a family, have the chance to 49 about food that didn"t taste good, and have the many things that these people in front of him 50 dreamed of having. Perhaps life wasn"t bad at all.

As children grow up, they become curious about different kinds of things. When they are babies, they are interested in the parts of their bodies and in the smiles of their mothers. The they become interested in the physical world around them: the plants, the animals, the sky. Later, they become interested in the things that people have made: wheels, bicycles, cars. And when they are adults, their curiosity continues. Sometimes this curiosity leads to a career (生涯、职业) in science. Scientists spend their lives trying to find out about the world. Those who work with the earth sciences study the earth, the oceans, and the skies. Other scientists who study living things work with the biological sciences. A third group of scientists study the physical sciences, e. g. physics, chemistry . These scientists have already discovered a lot about our world. For example, they tell us why your heart beats fast when you run. They say that when you are quiet, your heart normally beats sixty-five or seventy-five times a minute. Your heart is a pump (泵) that pumps blood to all parts of the body. The blood carries oxygen and nutrition. When you run, your muscles work very hard and use the nutrition that the blood carries to them. The muscles need oxygen, too . So your brain sends a signal to the heart. The signal means that the muscles need more nutrition and oxygen. Then the heart beats fast and sends blood quickly to the muscles. It may beat 90 to 140 times a minute. Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why does the ocean water taste salty?” Scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask , “What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get saltier every year.” Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question. We know a lot about our world, but there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious. 小题1:According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A.People are curious in the same way. | B.People in different countries are interested in different things. | C.Men and women are curious about different things. | D.People of different ages are interested in different things | 小题2:Scientists who work with the biological sciences study____.A.the earth , the oceans and the sky | B.man-made things | C.plants and animals | D.ocean water | 小题3:When you run, your muscles need ____.A.more nutrition and oxygen | B.more signals | C.more salt | D.water |
