A new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that
although love can make adults live healthily and happily, it is a bad thing for young people. Puppy
love(早恋) may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression(忧郁症). The study shows
that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.
The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is "loss
of self". According to the study, even though boys would say "lose themselves in a romantic
relationship", this "loss of self" is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young
girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won"t tell that to
their parents.
Dr. Marianm Kaufman, an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will
have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression.
She advises kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up, it is important for young
people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should
encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend
enough time with family.
Parents should watch for signs of depression—eating or mood changes—and if they see signs from
their daughter or son, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance
and depression seems to become weak with age. Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity(成熟) gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.1. What"s the main idea of the passage?A. Romance is a two-edged sword for adults
B. Parents should forbid their children"s love lives.
C. Puppy love may bring young people depression.
D. Romance is good for young people.2. Which of the following is more likely to have depression?  A. Young girls who always hide their feelings and opinions.
B. Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior.
C. Young people who have a strong sense of self.
D. Careless parents whose children are deep in love.3. What can be inferred from the passage?  A .Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly.
B. The older a woman is, the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance.
C .Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression.
D. Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents.4. What"s the author"s attitude towards puppy love?A. Confused.
B. Scared.
C. Disinterested.
D. Disapproving.

Recently. a survey was done among 288,000 students. which shows that today"s traditionalage college
freshmen are "more materialistic and less altruistic (利他主义的)" than at any time in the 19 years of the
poll(民意调查).
Not surprisingly. in these hard times. the students" major purpose "is to be financially well off."
Developing a meaningful philosophy of life is less important than ever. It follows then that today the most
popular course is not literature or history but accounting.
Interest in teaching. social service and the "altruistic" fields is at a low. On the other hand. enrollment
in business programs. engineering and computer science is way up.
That"s no surprise either. A friend of mine (a sales representative for a chemical company) was making twice the salary of her college instructors in her first year on the job-even before she completed her
twoyear associate degree.
Though it"s true that we all need a career. it is equally true that our civilization has accumulated an
incredible amount of knowledge in fields far beyond our own and that it will be better for our
understanding of these other contributions-either scientific or artistic.
Similarly. it is true that. in studying the diverse wisdom of others. we learn how to think. More
importantly. perhaps. education teaches us to see the connections between things. as well as to see
beyond our immediate needs.
Weekly we read of unions who went on strike for higher wages. only to drive their employer out of
business. No company. no job. How shortsighted in the long run!
But the most important argument for a broad education is that in studying the accumulated wisdom of the
ages. we improve our moral sense. I saw a cartoon recently which shows a group of businessmen looking puzzled as they sit around a conference table;one of them is talking on the intercom (对讲机) : "Miss
Baxter. " he says. "could you please send in someone who can distinguish right from wrong?"
From the longterm point of view. that"s what education really ought to be about.

1.According to the result of the survey. college students ________.
A.take developing a meaningful philosophy of life more seriously
B.have a wide range of knowledge in many aspects
C.pay more attention to the study of literature
D.have never been so materialistic as today

2.The students" criteria (标准) for choosing their majors today are largely basedon ________.
A.their own understanding of the courses
B.the financial goals they seek in life
C.the influence of their instructors
D.the vast potential for the future educational development

3.What does the fifth paragraph imply?
A.Knowledge in other fields has nothing to do with one"s career.
B.Business management should be included in educational programs.
C.The importance of a broad education should not be ignored.
D.A good understanding of the civilization will make students rich.

4.The author"s attitude to the effect of studying the diverse wisdom of others is ________.
A.positive
B.indifferent
C.doubtful
D.negative

5.The writer wrote the passage in order to indicate that ________.
A.college students today are not a diligent generation
B.people engaged in technical jobs lead a more meaningful life
C.career seekers shouldn"t focus on immediate interests only
D.working experience outside college counts a lot to one"s future career

If we agree that the function of education is to prepare us for life, then there is very little time to waste. So, while we can, we ought to concentrate on teaching children something really useful. Here is what our
schools should teach.
Politeness is a mark of civilization. The sooner children learn this, the better. In any case, a lot can be
accomplished by a smile and good manners.
Like it or not, our adult lives will be consumed by the struggle for money, but we don"t make an effort
to teach children how to manage it. So our schools have a duty to teach them this ability from the
beginning.
We"re likely to accept something we are told, but that"s not what educated people do. Educated
people are reasonable and they look at facts. If our schools teach nothing else, they should at least teach
critical ( 批判性的) thinking.
Children should learn to take care of their health. They should know that if they eat junk food ( 垃圾
食品) ,they will become fat and unhealthy. They should be very clear about what happens to their bodies when they drink or smoke.
All of us are part of society. We have rights and responsibilities. We ought to understand what they
are.   We have to know a little bit of our history and geography, because we need to have an environment
in which to relate to the people around us.
How will we test students on these? We can"t. But that"s not a reason to avoid teaching what is
important. Our schools should spend every moment they have telling this to our children :"This is life, this
is what you are going to face, and this is how you deal with it."

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词.
注意:每个空格只填1 个单词.
Having entered a boarding school, Ada and her twin sister Rita determined to strike out independently. Although the sisters had requested rooms in different buildings, they were placed in the same, Ada on the
eighth floor and Rita one floor higher. While Ada lived in harmony with her roommate, Rita was unhappy. She and her roommate had a quarrel over matters like the smallest thing-the time of lights being turned
off-and the biggest thing-the arrangement of the furniture. Finally, they communicated primarily through
short notes rather than by speaking. Rita kept running down along the stairs to ask Ada for help. Before
long, the two wanted to live together again. Rita"s roommate finally had to move out.
Rita"s ability to solve her problem by rooming with her twin is unusual, but the conflict she faced is not. Despite great efforts by many schools to make good roommate matches, unpleasant outcomes are
common.
Most conflicts between roommates develop from small, annoying differences. In extreme cases, the
conflicts can lead to serious violence and affect roommates" psychological ( 心理的) health.
Learning to tolerate a stranger"s habits may teach students the art of compromise, but the learning process
is often painful.
Many schools have started conflict solution programs to calm tensions that could build up like a volcano preparing to explode, resulting in physical violence. Some schools try to prevent conflicts by using computerized matching. Students are put together on the basis of their answers to housing form questions about
preferred hours of study and sleep, and selfdescribed tendencies toward tidiness or disorder. Parents
sometimes weaken the process by taking the forms and filling in false data about their children"s habits.
If only conflicts between roommates could disappear!
