Future history books might record that we were robbed of the use of our eyes ,In our hurry to get from one place to another, we fail to see anything on the way, Air travel gives you a bird’s –eye view of the world ---or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get in your way, When you travel by car or train , you are moving so quickly that you do not see the countryside clearly , Car drivers are forever thinking about going on and on; they never want to stop, Is it the great motorways ,that attract them, or what? And as for sea travel ,it hardly deserves mention ,It is perfectly summed up in the words of the old song:’I joined the navy to see the world ,and what did I see? I saw the sea’. You mention the place names in the world like EI Dorado, Kabul and someone is sure to say‘I’ve been there’meaning ,‘I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.’ When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing :you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place, But actual arrival ,when it is achieved , is meaningless , You want to move on again . By traveling like this, you suspend (中止)all experience; the present stops being a reality:you might just as well be dead. The traveler on foot, on the other hand , lives constantly in the present, For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes, He experiences, the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body, At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical tiredness, Satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travelers. 小题1:The underlined words “get in your way”in Paragraph I can be replaced, by .A.block your sights | B.expend your range of vision | C.prevent you from going out of the plane halfway | D.make your travel continue | 小题2:What does the author think of the travelers mentioned in Paragraph 1?A.They get a good view of the landscape | B.They make full use of their eyes | C.They fail to see the scenery with their heart | D.They are eager to see everything on the way. | 小题3:Why does “the present”mean “nothing ”when we travel at high speeds?A.Because we change our aims all the time | B.Because we are eager to go to another place | C.Because we are looking forward to the future life | D.Because we cannot enjoy the experience we have had | 小题4:What will the author most probably advise us to do?A.To go hiking in the mountain | B.To travel at a high speed | C.To travel by car or train | D.To go around the world | 小题5:What would be the best title for the passage?A.Different travelers | B.The use of eyes | C.Ways of traveling | D.True traveling |

The island of Great Britain being small (compare the size of Australia), the natural place for holiday relaxation and enjoyment is extensive coastline, above all its southern and eastern coasts, and the favorite resort of the mass-population of industrial Lancashire, is on the north-west coast. Distant and little-inhabited area like Northern Scotland, are too remote for the development of large seaside resorts. For most children, going to the seaside suggests a week or fortnight of freedom on the beach, ideally a sandy one providing enough opportunities for the construction of sandcastle, fishing in pool, paddling in shallow water or swimming in deep water. Their parents spend sunny days swimming in the sea and sunbathing on the beach. Not that the British sun can be relied on and the depressing sight of families wandering round the town in old –fashioned and under umbrellas is only too common. However, there are always shops with their tourist souvenirs, plenty of cafes and if the worst comes to the worst, the cinema to offer a refuge. The average family is unlikely to seek accommodation in a hotel as they can stay more cheaply in a boarding-house. There are usually three or four-storeyed Victorian buildings, whose owners spend the summer season letting rooms to a number of couples or families and providing three cooked meals a day at what they describe as a reasonable price, with the hope that in this way they will add enough to their savings to see the winter through. Otherwise there are the camping sites for those who prefer self-catering. Nowadays, even when an increasing number of people fly off to Mediterranean resorts where a well-developed suntan (晒黑) can be assured, or explore in comfort Swiss lakes and mountains or romantic Italian or Spanish cities, the British seaside is still the main attraction for families, especially those with younger children. As they queue for boats trips, cups of tea or ice-cream under gray skies and in dizzling rain, the parents are reliving (重温) their own childhood when time seemed endless, their own sandcastles the most splendid on the beach, the sea always blue and friendly and the sun always hot. 小题1:Children enjoy the seaside because ________.A.their parents can live and play with them | B.they can buy what they want there | C.there are a variety of enjoyable ways of spending time there | D.they can learn how to build sandcastles, how to swim, etc. | 小题2:The reason suggested for running a boarding-house is that ________.A.people can live as where they live at home | B.people can cook what they are favorite | C.the owners provide three cooked meals a day at a reasonable price | D.the resulting additional income will ensure a living for several months | 小题3:Many parents once played on the British beach and ________.A.still have their happy memories of it | B.don’t want to have a holiday there | C.don’t want to take their children to have a holiday there. | D.want to build their own sandcastles the most splendid on the beach again | 小题4:Nowadays more and more people fly off to Mediterranean resorts for ________.A.an exploration of lakes in comfort | B.a well-developed suntan | C.a well-equipped boarding-house | D.a romantic party | 小题5:Which of the following is True according to the passage?A.It is suggested that as a form of holiday entertainment the cinema is the best place to go in bad weather. | B.A reason suggested in the first paragraph for the appeal of the English seaside is that it is an ideal place for children. | C.Northern Scotland is little-inhabited and remote. | D.Few people in Britain go abroad for holiday relaxation and enjoyment. |

In the 18th century, New York was smaller than Philadelphia and Boston. Today it is the largest city in America. How can the change in its size and importance be explained? To answer this question we must consider certain facts about geography, history, and economics. Together these three will explain the huge growth of America’s most famous city. The map of the Northeast shows that the four areas with the largest populations in this region are around seaports. At these points materials from across the sea enter the United States, and the products of the land are sent there for export across the sea. We know that places where transportation lines meet are good places for making raw materials into finished goods. That is why seaports often have cities nearby. But cities like New York needed more than their geographical location in order to become great industrial centers. Their development did not happen simply by chance. About 1815, when many Americans from the east had already moved toward the west, transportation routes from the seaports to the central regions of the country began to be a serious problem. The slow wagons of that time, usually drawn by horses, were too expensive for moving heavy freight (货物) very far. In New York State a canal seemed the best answer to the transportation problem. From the eastern end of Lake Erie all the way across the state to the Hudson River there is a long strip of low land. Here the Erie Canal was built, and after several years of work it was completed in 1825. The canal produced an immediate effect. Freight costs were cut to about one tenth of what they had been. New York City, which had been smaller than Philadelphia and Boston, quickly became the leading city of the coast. In the years that followed, transportation routes on the Great Lakes were joined to routes on the Mississippi River. Then New York City became the end point of a great inland shipping system that started from the Atlantic Ocean far up the western branches of the Mississippi. 小题1:Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.The Development of Transportation in New York | B.Export and Import of New York | C.How New York Became America"s Largest City | D.How New York Exchanged with Europe | 小题2:According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A.The Erie Canal connected Lake Erie with the Hudson River. | B.Economists are of the opinion that places where farming is done are good for making raw materials into finished goods. | C.Wagons drawn by horses and oxen soon proved to be better and cheaper than canal transportation. | D.The seaports usually have less population but more business. | 小题3:Freight costs were reduced to 10% of what they had been because of ________.A.cheap and fast wagons | B.the new sea routes | C.the construction of the Erie Canal | D.the development of industry |

Most magazines, whether online or print, will include book reviews. However, most editors and staff writers are usually too busy to read books and review them themselves. Therefore, writing book reviews can be a great way to get started with a writing career. How do you write a great book review that will be sure to be noticed? Follow these tips to write a really interesting and unique book review. Start with a description of the book. Many people that are reading your review may not know anything about the book you’re reviewing. Instead of making readers go find information on their own by searching for the book title, start out with a little description of the book. Make sure you avoid too long of a summary. Start with a short paragraph or so that hits all the major points but doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to tell your readers everything about the book, because then they won’t have to read it at all. Just give enough information so your readers are interested in reading the book. Be objective. Some magazines like to publish book reviews that are completely impersonal. This means that they want a review of the book that doesn’t share your opinion and that in which your opinion isn’t obvious from reading what you wrote. If you hated a book, it might not be a great book to review. You probably want to review books that you enjoyed. Avoid talking about how much you liked the book, however. You should not include your personal reaction to the book until the very end, where you include a sentence or two about whether or not you would recommend a book and to whom you would recommend it. Look through a lens(镜头). A great way to get your review noticed is to look at a book through a specific lens. Read the book as a feminist(男女平等主义者)would, for example, and talk about what a feminist might say to applaud or criticize the book. You can choose any number of lenses, and feminism is just one choice. An economic lens, a family lens, the lens of a different nationality, or the lens of a child could all be interesting ways to look at a book. If you look at a book in this way, instead of just reading it and forming your own opinion, it will be much more interesting and marketable. This is especially the case if you look at a lens that relates to the subject of the magazine to which you are submitting. Feminist magazines love book reviews about books read through a feminist lens, for example, because it is appropriate to their readership. Talk about the writer’s style. Another great way to write a book review is to talk about the writer’s style. Anyone can pick up a book and read the story, but it takes an experienced writer to note interesting things about another writer’s style and write about them intelligently. Furthermore, most people want to know if a book is easy or fun to read over whether or not the subject matter will interest them. 小题1:For what purpose is the passage written?A.To offer tips on writing book reviews. | B.To give advice on reading books. | C.To introduce writing styles. | D.To comment on a book. | 小题2:If a writer thinks a book is worth reading, he’d better state it _________________.A.in the title | B.in the first paragraph | C.as much as possible | D.at the final part | 小题3:The fourth paragraph is developed mainly by __________________.A.analyzing causes | B.giving examples | C.drawing comparisons | D.telling personal experiences | 小题4:Compared with ordinary readers, a skilled writer does better in _____________.A.giving an objective description of a book | B.looking at a book through a specific angle | C.finding a book and understanding its story easily | D.paying close attention to another writer’s style |
