Next time a customer comes to your office, offer him a cup of coffee. And when you’re doing your holiday shopping online, make sure you’re holding a large glass of iced tea. The physical sensation(感觉) of warmth encourages emotional warmth, while a cold drink in hand prevents you from making unwise decisions—those are the practical lesson being drawn from recent research by psychologist John A. Bargh. Psychologists have known that one person’s perception(感知) of another’s “warmth” is a powerful determiner in social relationships. Judging someone to be either “warm” or “cold” is a primary consideration, even trumping evidence that a “cold” person may be more capable. Much of this is rooted in very early childhood experiences, Bargh argues, when babies’ conceptual sense of the world around them is shaped by physical sensations, particularly warmth and coldness. Classic studies by Harry Harlow, published in 1958, showed monkeys preferred to stay close to a cloth “mother” rather than one made of wire, even when the wire “mother” carried a food bottle. Harlow’s work and later studies have led psychologists to stress the need for warm physical contact from caregivers to help young children grow into healthy adults with normal social skills. Feelings of “warmth” and “coldness” in social judgments appear to be universal. Although no worldwide study has been done, Bargh says that describing people as “warm” or “cold” is common to many cultures, and studies have found those perceptions influence judgment in dozens of countries. To test the relationship between physical and psychological warmth, Bargh conducted an experiment which involved 41 college students. A research assistant who was unaware of the study’s hypotheses(假设), handed the students either a hot cup of coffee, or a cold drink, to hold while the researcher filled out a short information form: The drink was then handed back. After that, the students were asked to rate the personality of “Person A” based on a particular description. Those who had briefly held the warm drink regarded Person A as warmer than those who had held the iced drink. “We are grounded in our physical experiences even when we think abstractly,” says Bargh. 小题1: According to Paragraph 1, a person’s emotion may be affected by ______.A.the visitors to his office | B.the psychology lessons he has | C.his physical feeling of coldness | D.the things he has bought online | 小题2: The author mentions Harlow’s experiment to show that ______.A.adults should develop social skills | B.babies need warm physical contact | C.caregivers should be healthy adults | D.monkeys have social relationships | 小题3: In Bargh’s experiment, the students were asked to ______.A.evaluate someone’s personality | B.write down their hypotheses | C.fill out a personal information form | D.hold coffee and cold drink alternatively | 小题4: We can infer from the passage that ______.A.abstract thinking does not come from physical experiences | B.feelings of warmth and coldness are studied worldwide | C.physical temperature affects how we see others | D.capable persons are often cold to others | 小题5: What would be the best title for the passage?A.Drinking for Better Social Relationships | B.Experiments of Personality Evaluation | C.Developing Better Drinking Habits | D.Physical Sensations and Emotions |

Each Indian(印第安人)was supposed to keep his birth name until he was old enough to earn one for himself. But his playmates(游戏伙伴)would always give him a name of their own.No matter what his parents called him, his childhood friends would use the name they had chosen.Often it was not pleasing, such as Bow Legs or Bad Boy.But sometimes a name fit so well that the youngster found it difficult to shake it off.If he could not earn a better one from a war later, he could be stuck with a name like Bow Legs for the rest of his life. The Indian earned his real name when he was old enough for his first fight against the enemy. His life name depended on how he acted during this first battle. When he returned from the war, the whole tribe would gather and observe the ceremony in which he would be given his name by the chief. If he had done well, he would get a good name.Otherwise he might be called Crazy Wolf or Man-Afraid-Of-a-Horse.So an Indian’s name told his record or described the kind of man he was. A man was given many chances to improve his name, however. If in a later battle he was brave in fighting against the enemy, he was given a better name. Some of our great fighters had as many as twelve names—all good and each better than the last. An Indian’s names belonged to him for the rest of his life.No one else could use them.Even he himself could not give them away because names were assigned by the tribe, not the family. So no man could pass on his name unless the chief and the tribe asked him to do so. Sometimes an Indian would be asked to give his name to a son who had performed a noticeable deed.I know of only three of four times when this happened. It is the rarest honor for a person—the honor of assuming(承担) his father’s name. 小题1: An Indian could be given the second name by__________.A.his father | B.the enemy | C.the chief of the tribe | D.his childhood friends | 小题2: The greatest honor an Indian could earn was____________.A.a victory in his first battle against the enemy | B.a name given by the chief | C.a ceremony to get his real name | D.the right to use his father’s name | 小题3: If an Indian had more than ten names, it meant that____________.A.many people in the tribe liked him | B.he was a great fighter | C.he had a lot of friends | D.he had fought in fewer than ten battles | 小题4: Which of the following statements is not true according to the passage?A.The names given by the playmates of an Indian were usually not pleasant | B.The life name of an Indian was earned in battle | C.An Indian could throw away his birth name when he was old enough to earn one for himself. | D.The Indians themselves were not allowed to give their names away. |

During his life Dr James Naismith worked as a doctor, taught P.E and wrote several books. While he never thought it very important, Dr Naismith is today best known for one thing. He was the inventor of basketball. Dr James Naismith was born in Canada in 1861 and his first job was at a special sports school in the USA. One day the school principal told James he was having a problem with the students. Because of heavy snow, the students could not go outside. He told James that they needed a sport the boys could play indoors and gave the teacher two weeks to think of something. It was on the very last day that James came up with his idea. The “birth of basketball” is said to be on December 21, 1891, when two teams from the school played the first game. It was quite different from the basketball games of today. It had 9 players on each team and footballs were used instead of basketballs. Soon after, the game changed to 5 players on each side, using special “basketballs” through nets. Weddings in the United States vary as much as the people do. There are church weddings with a great deal of fanfare; there are weddings on mountain-tops with guests barefooted; and there have been weddings on the ocean floor with oxygen tanks for the guests. But many weddings, no matter where or how they are performed, include certain traditional customs. Before a couple is married, they become engaged. And then invitations are sent to those who live nearby, their close friends and their relatives who live far away. When everything is ready, then comes the most exciting moment. The wedding itself usually lasts between 20 and 40 minutes. The wedding party enters the church while the wedding march is played. The bride carrying a bouquet enters last with her father who will "give her away". The groom enters the church from a side door. When the wedding party is gathered by the altar, the bride and groom exchange vows. It is traditional to use the words "To have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part". Following the vows, the couple exchange rings. Wearing the wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand is an old custom. After the ceremony there is often a party, called a "reception" which gives the wedding guests an opportunity to congratulate the newlyweds. The car in which the couple leaves the church is decorated with balloons, streamers and shaving cream. The words "Just Married" are painted on the trunk or back window. The bride and groom run to the car under a shower of rice thrown by the wedding guests. When the couple drives away from the church, friends often chase them in cars, honking and drawing attention to them. William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. His childhood lacked the harmony (和睦) that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family—both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama (戏剧) and poetry. Yeats had strong faith in coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn’t lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama. Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats’s poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition. He had not enjoyed a major public life since winning the Nobel Price in 1923. Yet, he continued writing almost to the end of his life. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would who probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet Auden wrote, among others, the following liners: Earth, receive an honored guest: William Yeats is laid to rest. Do you think that a universal language will emerge within the next century? English is 51 the lingua franca in many parts of the world, and is the best language currently to know 52 business and science, 53 I don’t think English will 54 become a universal language. I think that if a language becomes the world language, it should be an artificial one. 55 , it might seem to many as an effort to 56 a certain cultural group. The 57 with a universal language is how to 58 it, and how to get the governments of the world to agree 59 its implementation. If this were to happen, the international language would be the 60 second language of all countries, and legally it would still play second fiddle to the current language of that country. It could allow different tribes in Africa to communicate, or 61 communication between small villages in India that each speaks different languages. Not to 62 it would mean that one would only have to learn two languages no matter 63 in the world he travels. What 64 specifics—what writing 65 should it use? Where should its words come from? Should the language be highly inflected or very analytical? And furthermore, how will the language be established? 小题1:A.preciously | B.uncertainly | C.indefinitely | D.currently | 小题2:小题3:A.so | B.moreover | C.but | D.therefore | 小题4:A.even | B.hardly | C.still | D.ever | 小题5:A.Otherwise | B.Meanwhile | C.Nevertheless | D.So | 小题6:A.promote | B.exceed | C.conduct | D.predict | 小题7:A.problem | B.impact | C.benefit | D.result | 小题8:A.set | B.build | C.rank | D.publish | 小题9:小题10:A.normal | B.official | C.legally | D.suddenly | 小题11:A.cause | B.enable | C.make | D.persuade | 小题12:A.tell | B.mention | C.say | D.speak | 小题13:A.how | B.what | C.where | D.whether | 小题14:A.about | B.for | C.if | D.kind of | 小题15:A.organization | B.change | C.management | D.system |
