Many people take it for granted that black is a color of bad things while white should always mean
something good. This may be because, in their opinion, black is related to darkness and white to purity.
However, that is not always the case. Did you know that the same one color may mean something
differently in different places of the world?
In the English-speaking world, black is the color of mourning-people wear black at the funeral. Red is
concerned with danger or bloodshed(伤亡). Yellow is the word for fear. If you are afraid, you are yellow. Yet none of these sayings is true outside the English-speaking world. In China and Korea white is the color of mourning. In Russia, China and some other countries, red stands for beauty, life and excellence. In Italy and Germany, you are yellow with anger, not with fear.
Even within the English-speaking area, it is not difficult to find color contradictions(矛盾). A redcap in
the United States is a porter in a railway station. In Britain, however, a redcap is a military policeman. Both names are logical, because both men wear red caps. Similarly, the British term for an American
white-collar worker is sometimes called a black-coated worker.
One does not have to cross an area to find color differences. Would you rather be red-blooded or a
blue-blooded? If we go back to the origin, we find that both terms are logical as both names suggest. The expression "blueblood" comes from Spain, where some noble families proudly told the world that they had "blue blood". Actually they meant that they had no Moorish or Jewish blood. But then why "blue" blood?
Because they were fair-skinned, and it is only natural that their blood vessels (血管) stood out appearing

Renaissance Reading:
The Accelerated Reader (AR) Program is a computerized reading enrichment program that combines
great children"s literature with computer skills. As an individualized reading program, it is designed to
motivate students to read more and to read good literature. Students of different abilities can use this
program. It is not a competitive program but one that improves any student"s reading ability.
Here is how it works. Students select books in their reading range from our Accelerated Reader
Selection and read it at their own pace. Once the student has completed the book, he/she is ready to
take an AR quiz. Each quiz consists of 5, 10, or 20 multiple choice comprehensive questions about
the book.
After taking the quiz, the computer shows the student how many questions he/she answered
correctly, shows the correct answers for missed questions, and praises the students" efforts with an
onscreen personalized message. Passing the quiz assures the teacher and the parent that the child
actually read and understood the book. Each student tests independently-reading the quiz questions
himself/herself.
The computer keeps track of reading points, books, and average test scores, as well as other
data. A student may test on a book only once and should, therefore, have thoroughly read and
understood the contents before taking the quiz. Each student is responsible for reading the screen
to be sure the quiz, by title and author, is the correct one he/she wishes to take.
Students are recognized for their accomplishments with praise from the teachers and special

Cultural differences in business entertaining include problems such as whom one entertains and
where and how one entertains. In countries where status is important, it is not advisable to invite
people of different statuses to the same dinner party. Americans will often invite people to their homes.
However, in some societies the home is considered too personal, unworthy, or too small to serve as
a proper place for business entertaining. In some countries there is a "help yourself" method of
entertaining done in the home. This method does not work well when entertaining people whose culture
teaches them to wait to be asked three times before accepting an offer of food. For example, a Chinese
guest went hungry all the evening without eating though he was quite hungry because he was too shy to
take food after only being asked to do so once. In another case, an American woman executive(负责人) was being entertained in London. After having the tea served, the American woman helped herself to
cream and sugar rather than waiting to be served. The English hostess was upset by the thought that she
was not serving quickly enough.
As a general rule, a small gift from your home country is OK. A gift that is tied to the particular
interest of the person is especially good. Gifts for children are also well received. Be careful that the
"hometown" gift you are bringing to Singapore is not made in Hong Kong. Because many gifts carry
symbolic meanings, it is always best to seek the advice of a cultural information before selecting gifts.

As many as one thousand years ago in the Southwest, the Hopi and Zuni Indians of North
America were building with adobe-sunbaked brick plastered with mud. Their homes
looked remarkably like modern apartment houses. Some were four stories high and contained
quarters for perhaps thousand people, along with store rooms for grain and other goods.
These buildings were usually put up against cliffs, both to make construction easier and for
defense against enemies. They were really villages in themselves, as later Spanish explorers
must have realized since they called them "pueblos", which is Spanish for town.
The people of the pueblos raised what are called "the three sisters"-corn, beans, and
squash. They made excellent pottery and wove marvelous baskets, some so fine that they
could hold water. The Southwest has always been a dry country, where water is scarce. The
Hopi and Zuni brought water from streams to their fields and gardens through irrigation
ditches. Water was so important that it played a major role in their religion. They developed
elaborate ceremonies and religious rituals to bring rain.
The way of life of lesssettled groups was simpler and more strongly influenced by nature.
Small tribes such as the Shoshone and Ute wandered the dry and mountainous lands between
the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. They gathered seeds and hunted small animals
such as rabbits and snakes.In the Far North the ancestors of today"s Inuit hunted seals,
walruses, and the great whales. They lived right on the frozen seas in shelters called igloos
built of blocks of packed snow. When summer came, they fished for salmon and hunted the
lordly caribou.
The Cheyenne, Pawnee, and Sioux tribes, known as the Plains Indians, lived on the
grasslands between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River. They hunted bison
commonly called the buffalo. Its meat was the chief food of these tribes, and its hide was
used to make their clothing and the covering of their tents and tipis.
