Rescue workers at the San Jose gold and copper mine in northern Chile had reason to sing this week.A small hole drilled into the earth became a passage(通道) to freedom for thirty-three trapped miners. They spent sixty-nine days underground."Never have people been trapped for so long so deeply," says a doctor at NASA, the American space agency, which helped in the rescue. But the chief medical officer for the miners said most are in good enough health to leave the hospital within a day or so.The first three were released from the hospital Thursday night. For much of the day the miners relaxed with Chilean President Sebastian Pinera. The thirty-two Chileans and one Bolivian still wore special sunglasses to protect their eyes. A partial mine collapse(坍塌) on 5th of August trapped them more than half a kilometer underground. They had to stretch a two-day food supply. For two weeks no one knew if they were alive or dead. Later, they received supplies(供给) and a video link lowered through drill holes. That link was how Ariel Ticona watched his wife give birth to their daughter. The miners have apparently agreed to share the money they earn from selling their story. They have already received gifts of money and travel offers.Edison Pena has been invited to the New York City Marathon and to Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley in Memphis, Tennessee.Mr.Pena described how he ran in the mine tunnels to ease the stress. And he led the miners in singing Elvis songs. The first miner rescued on Wednesday was Florencio Avalos. The second was Mario Sepulveda, who talked about how the experience tested his faith. He said: "I was with God and I was with the devil, they fought me, but God won.He took me by my best hand, the hand of God." The last miner up was Luis Urzua. He was the shift leader when his crew became trapped. Rescuers used a metal cage to pull the miners to safety in less than twenty-four hours -- faster than expected. The rescue capsule was a half-meter wide and known as the Phoenix. 小题1:How many miners had been rescued according to the report?A.Three | B.Sixty-nine | C.Thirty-three | D.Thirty-two | 小题2:According to the passage, when the miners were trapped, some of them did the followings except ________.A.sharing money | B.Running to ease stress | C.Watching a video showing his wife giving birth | D.Singing songs | 小题3: Edison Pena was invited to Graceland probably because ________________.A.he ran in the mine tunnel. | B.he prayed to God. | C.he led the miners in singing Elvis songs. | D.he was the shift leader. | 小题4: From the passage, we can infer the followings EXCEPT that _______________.A.Rescue workers were happy about their rescue work. | B.People felt surprised to find the miners safe and sound. | C.People might have been quite worried about the miners’ safety. | D.The trapped miners drilled a small hole themselves to escape. | 小题5:What would be the best title for the report?A.A mining accident | B.Miners saved, safe and sound | C.A difficult rescue | D.Miners trapped deep underground |

Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life. Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk. In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However, I believe that five is the best age to learn. By five or six, a child knows fear of water, a very important thing to know. It"s wise to be afraid, to recognize true danger. Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous. To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn, as soon as possible, these four basic strokes; butterfly, backstroke, Breaststroke, and crawl. I feel that one of these-the breaststroke-is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training. In swimming there are certain rules every swimmer should follow: 1). Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don’t risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends with you, you may get into trouble. 2). Don"t go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach, Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good. Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive. 3). Don"t smoke. Swimming depends on a healthy body; good lungs are part of it. 4). Work at any activity that builds muscles. 小题1: Little children can learn to swim as soon as _____. Green-space facilities are contributing to an important extent to the quality of the urban environment. Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea. At present it is generally accepted, although more as a self-evident statement than on the base of a closely-reasoned scientific proof. The recognition of the importance of green-spaces in the urban environment is a first step on the right way; this does not mean, however, that enough details are known about the functions of greenspaces in towns and about the way in which the inhabitants (居民) are using these spaces. The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation which for many years has been used in town-and-country planning, has in my opinion resulted in disproportionate (不成比例的) attention for forms of recreation far from home, whereas (但是)there was relatively little attention for improvement of recreative possibilities in the direct neighborhood of the home. We have come to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working, is used for activities at and around home. So it is obivous that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street door of the house. The urban environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more obligatory (强制性的) activities can also have a recreative aspect. The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district, if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets, because the risks of traffic are too great, if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot of enjoying for a moment the nice weather, in short, if you only feel yourself at home after the street door of your house is closed after you. 小题1: According to the author, the importance of greenspaces in the urban environment _______.A.is still unknown | B.is being closely studied | C.is usually neglected | D.has been fully recognized | 小题2:The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation has led to _______.A.the disproportion of recreation facilities in the neighborhood | B.all of the recreation facilities far from home | C.relatively little attention for recreative possibilities | D.the improvement of recreative possibilities in the neighborhood | 小题3:The author suggests that the recreative possibilities of greenspaces should be provided _______.A.in special areas | B.in the suburbs | C.in the neighbourhood of the house | D.in gardens and parks | 小题4: The author says “more obligatory activities can also have a recreative aspect” to _______.A.suggest that obligatory activities don’t need to serious | B.show that recreation activities are very important | C.show how recreation activities have spread wildly | D.suggest how to offer recreation activities around home | 小题5:Why would someone only feel himself at home according to the last paragraph?A.One lives the very best standard of living. | B.There are too many distractions outside his home. | C.There are few recreations around his house. | D.One needs the street door of his house to be opened always. |

Thousands of years ago, birthdays were considered special days. On birthdays, the bad spirits were able to harm you and change your life. It was believed that the only way to solve the problem was to have your friends and family around you, so that good wishes and presents would keep the bad spirits away. Also, noisemakers were thought to be used at parties as a way of scaring away the evil spirits. The custom of lighting candles was created by people believing that the gods lived in the sky. By lighting candles and torches, they were sending a signal or prayer to the gods, so they could be answered. Blowing out the candles and making a wish were thought to be another way of sending a signal or a message. This is how the way we celebrate our birthdays came about. But different cultures celebrate in different ways. The birthday story in the Bible(圣经) that we know best is about the birth of the Christ in Bethlehem(地名:伯利恒). For nearly 2000 years since that day, the Christian world has been honoring this birth. The day many Englishmen celebrate is, of course, Christmas. There are other references to birthday parties. King Pharaoh celebrated his birthday by making a feast for his court followers. That was over 4000 years ago. The story of King Herod tells that on his birthday he made a supper for his lords, high captains and other special friends in Galilee (地名:加利利). 小题1: According to the passage, good wishes and presents given by one’s friends and family on his birthday can _____________________.A.cheer him up | B.prove that he’s a popular person | C.bring him a big fortune | D.push bad spirits away | 小题2: Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.The custom of lighting candles originated with the gods. | B.The gods celebrate their birthdays by lighting candles. | C.People send messages to the gods by lighting or blowing out the candles. | D.The gods will help people realize their dreams on their birthdays. | 小题3: The two ancient kings’ ways of celebrating their birthdays show__________________.A.how great the two kings were | B.how different cultures celebrate in different ways | C.the two kings’ excellent cooking skills | D.that their court followers were awarded the special honors | 小题4: The passage is mainly about __________________.A.the functions of the noises made on birthdays. | B.how to scare away the bad spirits on birthdays | C.the origin of a famous day Christmas | D.how birthdays came about |

Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes(基因)decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall you"re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out. But genes don"t decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential(潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height. No doubt(怀疑) you"re wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There"s no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 2 inches (6 centimeters) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty (when your body starts changing and becoming more grown up). Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimeters here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you"re at now, how you"ve been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through. Don"t be scared if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt(高峰)during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later ——between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys. You"ll usually begin to notice that you"re growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty. 小题1:If you want to know how fast and how tall you should grow, ____________.A.you should have enough exercise | B.you can ask doctors for help | C.you should save the environment | D.You can record your growth during puberty | 小题2: This passage is mainly about ____________.A.how the genes work in your body | B.when is the time you grow fast | C.why you look like your parents | D.how you grow to a certain height | 小题3: After reading this passage, we can explain ___________.A.how good it is to be a doctor | B.how much sleep time we need | C.why genes can’t decide everything | D.what healthy diet is | 小题4: Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.Your height most probably depends on how high your parents are. | B.Girls’ age for starting puberty is usually earlier than that for boys’. | C.The time showing the first changes of puberty is never noticed. | D.You may be scared sometimes when you grow too fast. |
