Recently, in the hope of earning both money and social experience, I became a door-to-door salesman. I once read a saying: "If somebody wants something of you, you will be treated as warmly as spring, but if they don"t you may be treated as coldly as winter." You may consider it an exaggeration(夸张),but if you are a salesman, it is clearly correct. You would never have found it to be so true if you hadn"t been a salesman. You needn"t stand doubtful looks and unfriendly views; you needn"t listen to something completely wrong and nod to say that it was quite right; you needn"t always keep patience and smile; you needn"t repeat the same sentences over again; you needn"t talk to somebody you dislike. I did this work for a month; then I decided to give it up. In spite of the above reasons, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting lower. Even worse, I hadn"t enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don"t think it is worth doing such a thing even though I was earning money at great cost. Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about good students who do part-time work and keep high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have some strong bad effects on study. Most students don"t see the relationship between studies and work in a correct way. In my opinion, if it isn"t a must for money reasons, students should be cautious about taking up a part-time job. In western countries even the children of very rich families take part in hard jobs during the summer vacation. 1. What caused the writer to give up his part-time job? A. Too much attention to it and his grades getting lower B. He often missed some college activities C. Sometimes he felt tired and unhappy D. All the above 2. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word "sacrificing"? A. losing B. wasting C. using D. getting 3. The writer thought __________. A. to do part-time job was unnecessary B. part-time jobs had good effect upon study C. it"s hard to plan study and work correctly D. part-time jobs were good for students 4. Who should take part-time jobs according to the text above? A. Every college student B. Those who want to get study experience C. Those in great need of money D. Those from very rich families |

London has more than nine million visitors every year. They come and visit some of the most famous places in England: Big Ben, the Tower of London and the River Thames. You can see some of the most interesting places in London by getting on the tour buses. Or you can take a ride on the London Eye. This large wheel slowly takes you 135m above the River Thames. The River Thames is London"s main waterway. It has shaped the capital"s landscape, history and geography. So one of the best ways of knowing more about the city is to take a trip along the river. The clock tower of the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, has become one of the main symbols of London. The sound of the bell, which you can hear at the beginning of many television and radio programmes, has become well-known throughout the nation. No visit to London is complete without a look at the Tower of London, in the eastern part of the city. After Big Ben, the Tower may be London"s most visited tourist spot. Directly south is Tower Bridge, which is more than100 years old. Along all the palaces in London, Buckingham Palace is the most famous. It has been the main London home of the royal family since Queen Victoria moved there in 1873. You can visit some of the rooms in August and September. And most mornings of the year you can watch the soldiers outside changing the guard. About one hour by train out of London is the Tower of Windsor. Here you can visit another of the Queen"s homes-Windsor Castle. There was a fire in 1992 and many of the rooms were badly burned. But now they are full of beautiful pictures, tables and chairs again. Sightseeing in London is great, but it can get very tiring. So, the best way to start the day is to fill up with an English breakfast. You can buy an English breakfast in nearly every hotel, and at many restaurants and cafes. An English pub is a good place to stop for lunch and a drink. You can get hot or cold food and try one of England"s many ales(浓啤酒). Fish and chips are also a traditional English meal. So look out for fish and chip shops in cities as well as by the sea. Or you can sit outside one of the many roadside pubs and cafes in London, and simply watch the busy world go by. |

If there is one thing I am sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives- the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It"s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do — as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are. It"s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I am pretty sure that it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read- sports and international news, etc. I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media (煤体). They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn"t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it is never really pleasant to read something just on a screen. |

A. newspapers will win the competition among the different media B. newspapers will stay with us together with other media C. television will take the place of newspapers. D. some media will die out |

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat. It is the elephant"s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and undergrowth, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters. Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well. What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem. |

A. Disappearance of African elephants. B. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants. C. The effect of African elephants" search for food. D. The eating habit of African elephants. |

A. Fixing the time. B. Worsening the state. C. Improving the quality D. Deciding the conditions. |
3. What do we know about the open spaces in the passage? |
A. They result from the destruction of rain forests. B. They provide food mainly for African elephants. C. They are home to many endangered animals. D. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds. |
4. The passage is developed mainly by ______. |
A. showing the effect and then explaining the causes B. pointing out similarities and differences C. describing the changes in space order D. giving examples |
