You are standing in the kitchen and a voice says, "Add a little more salt to that soup." Yes, it"s always
nice to have someone help you when you"re cooking. But this voice is not from a man. You are alone!
Then where does it come from? Is it from a ghost? No, this isn"t a ghost kitchen-it"s the kitchen of the
future.
Scientists are working to improve everything in the kitchen, from fridges to tables, and even the ways we
cook. They are making a system. It will help a person cook a meal. You don"t need cookbooks. You can hear how to cook food.
The fridge of the smart kitchen has a scanner. It looks at the foods in the fridge. It will order more milk
from the store when your milk has gone bad or there is no more in the fridge. The gloves will test the
temperature of everything they touch and say, "Need to cook longer" or "Hot and ready to eat". If you
leave them on the stove by mistake, they"ll say, "Fire!" Even the knives and spoons will speak. For
example, if your food is bad, the knives and spoons will tell you not to eat it.
The future kitchen may look wonderful, but it"s not cheap. The multimedia fridge costs about 8,000
dollars. So even though high-tech kitchens are no longer a dream, not everyone can afford one.

Happiness is for everyone. You don"t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads in their free time. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get a success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can see that happiness is always around you. Happiness doesn"t mean money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something that can"t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转的)door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person. 1. When you do something wrong , people around you will . A. quarrel with you B. help you correct it C. do something wrong like you D. laugh at you 2. What will your friends say when you make great progress? A. Oh, so do I B. Congratulations! C. Good luck! D. Just so-so 3. The passage mainly tells us . A. parents always care for our life and health B. we"re not happy if we meet with difficulties C. happiness is always around us D. life is colorful | |||

I"m seventeen. I had worked as a box boy at a supermarket in Los Angeles. People came to the counter (柜台) and you put things in their bags for them. And carried things to their cars. It was hard work. While working, you wear a plate with your name on it. I once met someone I knew years ago. I remembered his name and said, "Mr Castle, how are you?" We talked about this and that. As he left, he said, "It was nice talking to you, Brett." I felt great, he remembered me. Then I looked down at my name plate. Oh, no. He didn"t remember me at all, he just read the name plate. I wish I had put "Irving" down on my name plate. If he"d have said, "Oh yes, Irving, how could I forget you?" I"d have been ready for him. There"s nothing personal here. The manager and everyone else who were a step above the box boys often shouted orders. One of these was: you couldn"t accept tips. Okay, I"m outside and I put the bags in the car. For a lot of people, the natural reaction (反应) is to take a quarter and give it to me. I"d say, "I"m sorry, I can"t." They"d get angry. When you give someone a tip, you"re sort of being polite. You take a quarter and you put it in their hand and you expect them to say, "Oh, thanks a lot." When you say, "I"m sorry, I can"t." they feel a little put down . They say, "No one will know." And they put it in your pocket. You say, "I really can"t." It gets to a point where you almost have to hurt a person physically (身体上) to prevent him from tipping you. It was not in agreement with the store"s belief in being friendly. Accepting tips was a friendly thing and made the customer feel good. I just couldn"t understand the strangeness of some people"s ideas. One lady actually put it in my pocket, got in the car, and drove away. I would have had to throw the quarter at her or eaten it or something. I had decided that one year was enough. Some people needed the job to stay alive and fed. I guess I had the means and could afford to hate it and give it up. 1. What can be the best title for this text? A. How Hard Life Is for Box Boys B. Getting along with Customers C. Why I Gave up My Job D. The Art of Taking Tips 2. From the second paragraph, we can infer (推断) that ________. A. the writer didn"t like the impersonal part of his job B. with a name plate, people can easily start talking C. Mr Castle mistook Irving for Brett D. Irving was the writer"s real name 3. The box boy refused to accept tips because ________. A. customers only gave small tips B. some customers had strange ideas about tipping C. the store didn"t allow the box boys to take tips D. he didn"t want to fight with the customers 4. The underlined phrase "put down" in the third paragraph probably means ________. A. misunderstood B. defeated C. hateful D. hurt |
