No one knows who made the first ice cream. Some people think that water ices and milk ices may
have been made by the Chinese between three thousand and a thousand years ago. In that time, the dish
reached India. The Indians, in turn, many have passed on the secret to the Arabs and Persians.
Marco Polo, an Italian who travelled widely in the thirteenth century, noted that he found the Chinese
had long been making ices out of fruit juices and milk. From the fourteenth century on, ices became
popular first in Venice and then throughout Italy.
At first ice cream was a luxury (奢侈品) in France. Only rich people had the money to buy it. Then,
in 1660, a young man from Sicily, Francisco Procopio, arrived in Paris. He opened a shop that sold ice
cream at prices people could afford. Then his ice cream became so popular that other shops were
opened.
About 1640, King Charles introduced ice cream to England and soon ice cream quickly became
popular in England too.
American now eat more ice cream than any other people in the world. But they are not the only ones
who are fond of it. Greeks are also very fond of ice cream. In the large cities of Germany there are many
small shops that sell only ice cream. Ice cream shops are not as common as in England, although large
London stores do have soda fountains (冷饮部).
Ice cream sodas first became popular sometime in the 1880s in the United States. In fact they soon
became too popular to suit some of the good people of Evanston, Illinois. They thought it was not proper
to drink soda on Sunday. A city law was passed to stop the ice cream soda on Sundays. To keep within
the law, it is said that one man served ice cream with syrup (糖水).
Throughout its long history, ice cream has been a favorite dish. But only in this century has it been
made with so many different tastes. People today can select from more than 240 flavors.

"Our aim is to take our art to the world and make people understand what it is to move,"  said David
Belle, the founder of parkour (跑酷).
Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring. But what if making your
morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from walls and over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the James Bond in the movie Casino Royale? Bond jumps down from a roof to a windowsill and then runs several
blocks over obstacles on the way. It is just because of Bond"s wonderful performances that the sport has
become popular worldwide.
Yes, that"s parkour, an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to another as quickly as

walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop.

than that.
Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy (理念) behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination, go straight, jump over all the barriers as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life to reach the destination successfully. A parkour lover
said, "I love parkour because its philosophy has become my life, my way to do everything."
Another philosophy we"ve learnt from parkour is freedom. It can be done by anyone, at any time,
anywhere in the world. It is a kind of expression of trust in yourself. It is only a state of mind. It is when
you trust yourself that you earn energy.

                                                    Shyness May Be PartlyInherited
About 92 million Americans are shy, and according to recent research about half of them inherited the
trait.
The studies were discussed at the American Psychological Convention.
One study, by Harvard University, was of babies 21- 48 months old. It concluded that these babies
had a high heart rate when shown unfamiliar people or different toys.
Although shyness is not new, it has only recently become of interest to
researchers. The first study on the genetic connection was in 1979.
According to Warren Jones of the University of Tulsa, social relations these days are more complex. "With less ritual(仪式) and more complex situations," he said, "shyness is a national concern."
Not all shy people are anxious and fearful, according to another study. Evidence shows that only half
of shy people are tense, worried, and fearful in social situations.
Many men use shyness as an excuse for failing in social situations, according to C.R. Snyder of the
University of Kansas. "This is not true of females. Perhaps,
American men are pressured to be assertive(自信的) and successful. So they would rather say they"re
shy than admit they"re incompetent."
Shy people may do very well socially after the first meeting with someone. In
fact, shypeople tend to be more stable.
The psychologists said shyness seems to be cultural. Japan has the highest rating. China and Israel
have the lowest rating. The United States rated in the middle.

C. Some shy people are anxious and fearful, some not.

4. Why would American men rather say they"re shy than admit they"re incompetent?  Because ______.
A. shyness is usually used as an excuse by them.
B. shyness is a good excuse.
