Tyler was born infected with HIV: his mother was also infected. From the very beginning of his life, he was dependent on medications to enable him to survive. When he was five, he had a tube surgically inserted in a vein in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he carried in a small backpack on his back. Medications were hooked up to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times, he also needed supplemented oxygen to support his breathing. Tyler wasn"t willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease. It was not unusual to find him playing and racing around his backyard, wearing his medicineladen backpack and dragging his tank of oxygen behind him in his little wagon. All of us who knew Tyler marveled at his pure joy in being alive and the energy it gave him.Tyler"s mom often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast that she needed to dress him in red. That way, when she peered through the window to check on him playing in the yard, she could quickly spot him. This dreaded disease eventually wore down even the likes of a little dynamo like Tyler. He grew quite ill and, unfortunately, so did his HIVinfected mother. When it became apparent that he wasn"t going to survive, Tyler"s mom talked to him about death. She comforted him by telling Tyler that she was dying too, and that she would be with him soon in heaven. A few days before his death, Tyler beckoned me over to his hospital bed and whispered, "I might die soon.I"m not scared. When I die, please dress me in red.Mom promised she"s coming to heaven, too.I"ll be playing when she gets there, and I want to make sure she can find me." | 1. Almost everyone is wondering, "What happens to all my money? I never seem to have anything left to put away. " Why isn"t a dollar worth as much as it used to be? One dollar is always worth the same amount, that is, 100 cents. But the value of a dollar is how much it can buy. The value of money depends on the cost of living. Economists say that the cost of living is the money that a family must pay for the necessities of life such as food, housing or rent, clothes, and medical expenses. For many years now, the cost of living has increased greatly, so the value of the dollar has decreased. When a dollar has a low value, you cannot buy as many things with it. No one fully understands why the cost of living keeps increasing, but economists believe that workers and producers can make process go up. As workers earn more money, they have more money to spend, so they demand more goods. If there a a great demand for certain goods, the prices of these goods go up. At the same time, if there"s a shortage of goods, the prices also go up. For example, if everyone wants to buy more and more gas, the price of gas goes up. When companies which hold gas from buyers, they can also make the price of gas go up. Families need to know what happens to their money. They need to make their income meet the cost of living, so many people plan a family budget. A budget is a list of monthly expenses. If your expenses add up to more than your income, you must find ways to save money. Maybe you"re spending too much on entertainment. Sounds unusual, doesn"t it? But it"s not that unrealistic, with the development of China"s high-speed railway system. And that"s not all. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan-----to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe. China is negotiating(谈判) to extend its own high-speed railway network to17 countries in 10 to15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore. China has suggested three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore, via Vietnam and Malaysia. Anothercould start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and" Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe. The new system would still follow China"s high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes. Of course, there are many problems that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge(轨距) , maintenance(维修)of railway tracks. So, it"s important to pay attention to every detail. But the key problem is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic(国内的 )railway expansion. China hopes that resources from other countries could stream into China to support development. It"ll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on. For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China"s far west.
