阅读下面的短文,请根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)      Two hours from the tall buildings of Manhattan and Philadelphia live some of the world"s largest black
bears. They are in northern Pennsylvania"s Pocono Mountains, a home they share with an abundance of
other wildlife.
The streams, lakes, grassland, mountain ridges and forests that make the Poconos an ideal place for
black bears have also attracted more people to the area.
Open spaces are threatened by plans for housing
estates and important habitats are endangered by highway construction. To protect the Poconos" natural
beauty from irresponsible development, the Nature Conservancy(大自然保护协会)named the area one
of America"s "Last Great Places".
Operating out of a century - old schoolhouse in the village of Long Pond, Pennylvania, Cook, one of
the Conservaney"s branches, is working with local people and business leaders to balance ________________________. By developing partnerships with people like Francis Altemose, the Conservancy has been able to protect more than, 14,000 acres of environmentally important land in the area.
Altemose"s family has farmed in the Pocono area for generations. Two years ago Francis worked with
the Conservancy to include his farm in a county farmland protection program, As a result, his family"s land can be protected from development and the Altemoses will be better able to provide a safe financial future for their 7--year-old grandson.
Cook attributes the Conservancy"s success in the Poconos to having a local presence and a
commitment to working with local residents(英才苑居民 ).
"The key to protecting these remarkable lands is connecting with the local community," Cook said, "The people who live there respect the land. They value quiet forests, clear streams and abundant wildlife. They are eager to help with conservation efforts."

After too long on the Net,even a phone call can be a shock. My boyfriend"s Liverpudlian accent
suddenly becomes too difficult to understand after his clear words on screen; a secretary"s tone seems
more rejecting than I"d imagined it would be. Time itself becomes fluid- hours becomes minutes, and alternately seconds stretch into days. Weekends, once a highlight of my week, are now just two ordinary days.
For the last three years, since I stopped working as a producer for Charlie Rose, I have done much of my work as a telecommuter. I submit articles and edit them by E-mail and communicate with colleagues on Internet mailing lists. My boyfriend lives in England, so much of our relationship is computer-mediated.
If I desired, I could stay inside for weeks without wanting anything. I can order food, and manage my
money, love and work. In fact,at times I have spent as long as three weeks alone at home, going out
only to get mail and buy newspapers and groceries.  I watched most of the blizzard of 96 on TV.
But after a while, life itself begins to feel unreal. I start to feel as though I"ve merged (融合) with my
machines, taking data in spitting them back out, just another node (波节)on the Net. Others on line report the same symptoms. We start to strongly dislike the outside forms of socializing. It"s like attending
an A. A. meeting in a bar with everyone holding a half-sipped drink. We have become the Net opponents" worst nightmare.
What first seemed like a luxury, crawling from bed to computer, not worrying about hair, and clothes
and face, has become an avoidance,a lack of discipline. And once you start replacing real human
contact with cyber-interaction, coming back out of the cave can be quite difficult.
At times, I turn on the television and just leave it to chatter in the background, something that I"d never
done previously. The voices of the programs soothe (安慰) me, but then I"m jarred (使感不快) by the
commercials. I find myself sucked in by soap operas, or compulsively (强制性能地) needing to keep up with the latest news and the weather. "Dateline," "Frontline," "Nightline," CNN, every possible angle of
every story over and over and over, even when they are of no possible use to me. Work moves from
foreground to background.1. Compared to the clear words of her boyfriend on screen, his accent becomes____    A. unreal
B. unbearable
C. misleading
D. not understandable2. What does the last paragraph mean       ?  A. Having worked on the computer for too long, she became a bit strange.
B. She is so interested in TV programs that she often forgets her work.
C. She watches TV a lot in order to keep up with the latest news and the weather.
D. She turns on TV now and then in order to get some comfort from TV program.3. What is the author"s attitude to the computer?   A. She has become bored with it.
B. She dislikes it because TV is more attractive.
C. She dislikes it because it cuts off her relation with the outside world.
D. She likes it because it is very convenient.4. The underlined phrase "coming back out of the cave" probably means_______.          A. going back to the dreaming world
B. coming back home from the outside world
C. restoring direct human contact
D. getting away from living a strange life

nice to have someone help you when you"re cooking. But this voice is not from a man. You are alone!
Then where does it come from? Is it from a ghost? No, this isn"t a ghost kitchen-it"s the kitchen of the
future.
Scientists are working to improve everything in the kitchen, from fridges to tables, and even the ways
we cook. They are making a system. It will help a person cook a meal. You don"t need cookbooks. You
can hear how to cook food.
The fridge of the smart kitchen has a scanner. It looks at the foods in the fridge. It will order more milk
from the store when your milk has gone bad or there is no more in the fridge. The gloves will test the
temperature of everything they touch and say, "Need to cook longer" or "Hot and ready to eat". If you
leave them on the stove by mistake, they"ll say, "Fire!" Even the knives and spoons will speak. For
example, if your food is bad, the knives and spoons will tell you not to eat it.
The future kitchen may look wonderful, but it"s not cheap. The multimedia fridge costs about 8,000
dollars. So even though high-tech kitchens are no longer a dream, not everyone can afford one. 1. In the kitchen of the future, there is a ______ helping you.A. system

Anywhere you look, it is apparent there is a wide and  deep selection of choices of a career.
Whether it"s a hand on position in construction or sitting behind the  desk working on a computer,
everyone has some idea of what is an attractive career. However, while  making a career choice is
not simply a matter of following a dream for some, for the majority it means a  lot of research and
soul searching. Choosing and growing into the right career become one of the most important decisions
of an individual"s life.
It used to be that one followed in the footsteps of their father or grandfather or took over the family
business when it came to making a career choice. These days, a career path can start anywhere and
with a few years veer off into something totally different.
At the same time, career choices must be  realistic a nd well thought out. It is  not uncommon for
individuals to start down a career path and realize they have  made a  terrible mistake,   feeling as if it
may be too late to turn around. Not only does a career choice put a person"s strongest skills and interests
to use, it is also something that they will be doing on a consistent basis to bring in income. This is why a
career choice can be such a personal decision. Formerly it used to be unusual for someone to change
occupations or careers more than once or twice in a lifetime, it is now even more unusual to keep the
same career during someone"s working life.
However, having a career that fits your interests and personality has been found to be important to
an individual"s well being. A person"s career is something they will closely identify with, maybe even
forming somewhat of an attachment.
There are a great many resources for helping individuals with choosing the right profession. A number of websites offering tools such as career tests and information, educational resources and resume services can be found throughout the web.
