A popular saying goes, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." However, that"s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn"t matter if the words come from someone"s else or ourselves - the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We"re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn"t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This "self-talk" helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying "Good job!" Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh(刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive. Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn"t pass this test, then it"s better left unsaid. Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours. |

A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves B. we can benefit from talking to ourselves C. talking to ourselves always gives us courage D. it does no harm to have "self-talk" when we are alone |
3. The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely _______ |
A. praise ourselves B. remind ourselves C. make ourselves relaxed D. give ourselves amusement |
4. The author would probably hold the view that ___________ |
A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers B. negative words may stimulate(刺激) us to make more progress C. people tend to remember friendly words D. it is better to think twice before talking to others |

In my thirty years as a Time Management speaker, I have observed a lot of what we can and should not do to increase our daily result. Time Management is not necessarily working harder, but quicker and smarter. Sometimes our mistakes will keep us from running at a full pace. Here are the top four Time Management mistakes we should all avoid to help us to increase our daily success. a). Start your day without a plan of action. If so, you will have worked hard but may not have done enough of right things. Time Management is not doing the wrong things quicker. Time Management is doing the right things. b). Work with a messy(杂乱的) desk or work areas. Studies have shown that the person who works with a messy desk spends one and a half hours per day looking for things. If you have ever visited the office of a top manager, who is working with a clean desk environment, you will find that the manager works effectively(有效地). c). Don"t get enough sleep. Studies show that nearly 75% of us complain on a regular basis, all throughout our days, that we are tired. For most people, they get the quantity of sleep, but they lack the quality of sleep. Their days are filled with so much stress that they are out of control, working harder but maybe not smarter, that it"s difficult to get a full night"s sleep. d). Don"t take a lunch break. Many do not take a lunch break, working through that period in the hopes that it will give them more time to produce results. Studies have shown it may work just the opposite. After doing what we do for several hours, we start to feel tired. A lunch break, even short, gives us a chance to get our energy back again. |

Sports shoes that work out whether their owner has done enough exercise to warrant time in front of the television have been devised (发明;想出) in the UK. The shoes- named Square Eyes- contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the day"s efforts. The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University in London, UK. "We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out," she says. "And I wanted to tackle that with my design." Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps. Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely(精确 地)one minute of TV time. Existing pedometers(计步器) normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking. But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat. "It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort," she says. "That was one of my main design considerations." |
1. According to Swan, the purpose of her design project is to _____. |
A. keep a record of the steps of the wearer. B. deal with overweight among teenagers. C. enable children to resist(抵制) the temptation of TV. D. prevent children from being tricked by TV programs. |
2. Which of the following is true of Square Eyes shoes? |
A. They regulate(调整)a child"s evening TV viewing time. B. They determine a child"s daily pocket money. C. They have raised the hot issue of overweight. D. They contain information of the receiver. |
3. What is stressed(强调) by health experts in their suggestion? |
A. The exact number of steps to be taken. B. The precise number of hours spent on TV. C. The proper amount of daily exercise and TV time. D. The way of changing steps into TV watching time. |
4. Compared with other similar products, the new design ___. |
A. make it difficult for lazy teenagers to cheat. B. counts the wearer"s steps through shaking. C. records the sudden movement of the wearer. D. sends teenagers" health data to the receiver. |
5. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? |
A. Smart Shoes Decide on Television Time B. Smart Shoes Guarantee(保证)More Exercise C. Smart Shoes Measure Time of Exercise D. Smart Shoes Stop Childhood Overweight |

Rather than talk about how he feels, often a man would express his love by buying the woman cosmetics (化妆品), or bringing home a flower, or giving up the control of the remote (遥控器). And when men do talk, they"d prefer to talk about actions rather than emotions. For example, a lot of men would choose to express their long-range faith in a relationship by talking about next summer"s vacation plans, not by starting a conversation about undying love. Men just prefer to say their plans with plane tickets, rather than poetry. It"s one of the reasons why men are more comfortable talking at work (the practical world) than they are at home (the castle that emotion built). But you can bring out his great communicator by making him feel more like he"s operating in the work mode, even when the topic at hand is your love life. When men talk less and women want more, the conflict can escalate. Like when a policeman is questioning an unwilling witness, more silence equals more questions. A full 65 percent of men we surveyed recently told us that they don"t want their partners to ask them more questions about themselves. It"s clear that some men are just tired of feeling like they"re on the witness stand. They"re not necessarily hiding anything; many men simply prefer not to have to tell confusing feelings that they may not even understand themselves. An age-old method can make things better: back off a little, give him room to operate in a conversation, and he"s more likely to open up. |
1. A man is likely to show his concern for woman by _____. |
a. buying her make-up b. offering her flowers c. talking about feelings d. handing over the remote A. a, b, c B. a, b, d C. b, c, d D. a, c, d |

4. The underlined word "escalate" has the similar meaning to _____. |
A. decrease B. disappear C. change D. increase |
