Boys need friends, suffer when they don"t believe they have any,and worry over the ups and
downs of relationships. Many adults believe that somehow boys need friends less than girls do,
in truth, though,no boy is an island;boys value their friends throughout childhood and adolescence
and are happier and healthier when they have solid relationships with peers (同龄人).
Despite the common belief that girls are better at relationships, most boys consider their friends
a very important part of their lives, and boys may actually be better at keeping friendships than girls
are.A recent study of 10to15yearold boys and girls found that girls" friendships are actually more
fragile.Girls tend to say and do hurtful things to each other more frequently than boys, and girls are
more hurt by the end of a friendship.
Boys are the living definition of the phrase "peer group";they love games with rules, competition,
and doing things together.Boys seem to enjoy, even need the opportunity to test themselves against
others, and many lasting friendships begin in karate (空手道) class or on the basketball court.
Competence and skill are widely respected;being picked last for a team or left out altogether is
an experience that can haunt (萦绕心头) a boy for years.
As boys mature, the friendship becomes even more important, and it frequently widens to include
girls.During the teen years, friends can become the most important part of a boy"s life-and a part in
which his parents are not included. The confusion of being a teenager leads boys to form close bonds
with friends. There is the sense for many boys that a friend is someone who is "always there for me",
someone he can trust. They may be partners in crime or partners in study, but the friendship of
adolescent boys can run surprisingly deep.

There are plenty of creams etc on the market that help you look younger, but today, Dr Oz is
going to show how some people are actually living longer.
"We are going to talk about extreme life extension," he says. "I am talking in details about allowing
us to go into our second century of life with the energy that you have when you are a young person."
Owing to advances in technology and research on how diet affect the aging process, Dr Oz says
it might be possible for some people to live to see their 120th birthdays.
There"s one man in Oprah"s audience who Dr Oz says may become the first man in history to live
to be 150 years old. Joe Cordell is one of thousands around the world who believe they"ve found
the key to an extreme long life-calorie restriction leads to a longer, healthier life.
At 59 Joe weighs 130 pounds. He may not look like a person who needs to count calories, but
as part of his life extension program, he inspects every mouth of food that passes through his system.
Every day for the past seven years, Joe has limited himself to about 1,950 calories.
He believes that by eating less and restricting his caloric intake, he will trigger a genetic switch that
slows the aging process.
Joe doesn"t take away himself of food. Instead, the then 52-year-old father filled up on natural
fruits, vegetables and lean proteins(瘦蛋白) that were packed with necessary vitamins and nutrients.
"Whenever you are thinking about calorie restriction, you should continually think about getting the
most nutritional amount per calorie," Joe says.
In keeping with this principle, Joe starts every morning with three apples...but he only eats the
peels. "Most of the fiber is in the peel, and more importantly, most of the nutrients are in the peel,"
he says.
"It is important to eat some nuts with breakfast so that you do take in some fat, some healthy fats,"
he says. "I think it helps the absorption of the nutrients, and it is very filling."
For lunch, Joe usually eats a large salad, loaded with vegetables. At dinnertime, he and his family
enjoy lean meat or fish and more vegetables.
When Joe started practicing calorie restriction, he weighed 175 pounds. Since then, he has lost
45 pounds, and he says he hasn"t had a cold in seven years. Though he is in his "golden years",
researchers studying Joe say he has the body of a 20-year-old athlete.

When I was at primary school in the second grade, I used to follow my elder sister who is five
years older than me. She loved sports and was always playing basketball and softball. She was also
a runner and was good at it. She brought home some running awards, so I was motivated and started
running, too.
I started training at school and never missed even a day. Even if it was raining, I was training. At first
I was not very good; but as the years passed, I got better and better and started to win some competitions.
Breaking records
In 1994, I won the Mexican National Championships. Later, I won fourth place in the Pan-American
games that were held in Santiago de Chile. In 1996, I broke the Mexican record; and in 1997, I won
fourth place in the Central American Games. In 1997 and 1998, I again won the Mexican National
Championships and broke the Mexican records. Now I want to improve my personal record of 19
feet, 2 inches.
Plans for the future
I"m in Houston now, training with coach Tom Tellez at the University of Houston. He is the best
coach in the world. He also trained Carl Lewis, one of the best US athletes. I have the support of my
parents who always come with me to all my meets. I think that"s why I"m where I am. Next year
I have some very important competitions. One of them is in Canada in July 1999. I hope I do well.
