阅读理解。     A popular saying goes, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."
However, that"s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn"t matter
if the words come from someone"s else or ourselves -the positive and negative effects are just as
lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We"re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we
really shouldn"t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy
habit.
This "self-talk" helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves
down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay
positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give
ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your
room, join me in saying "Good job!"
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we
should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item
to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably
respond in a similar manner. Or harsh(刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be
defensive.
Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said.
And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it
loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn"t pass this test, then it"s better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when
we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊)and motivate others to do their best.
Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.1. The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.A. not sticks and stones but words will hurt us
B. inspiring words give us confidence
C. negative words may let us down
D. words have a lasting effect on us2. There is no sense for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because _______.A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves
B. we can benefit from talking to ourselves
C. talking to ourselves always gives us courage
D. it does no harm to have "self-talk" when we are alone2. The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely _______ .A. praise ourselves
B. remind ourselves
C. make ourselves relaxed
D. give ourselves amusement3. The author would probably hold the view that ______.A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers
B. negative words may encourage us to make more progress
C. people tend to remember friendly words
D. it is better to think twice before talking to others

mouth. but civilized countries in normal times have better sources of news than rumour. They have radio,
television, and newspapers. In times of confusion ( 混乱 ), however, rumour appears and becomes
widespread. At such times the different kinds of news are in competition: the press, television, and radio
against the grapevine.
Especially do rumours spread when war requires control on many important matters. The normal
news sources no longer give out enough information. Since the people can not learn through legal
channels all that they are anxious to learn, they pick up "news" wherever they can and when this happens,
rumour grows.
Rumours are often repeated even by those who do not believe the tales. There is an interest about them.
The reason is that the cleverly designed rumour gives expression to something  deep in the hearts of the
victims-the fears, doubts, forbidden hopes, or daydreams which they hesitate to voice directly.
Pessimistic ( 悲观的 ) rumours about defeat and disasters show that the people who repeat them are
worried and anxious .Optimistic rumours  about record  production or peace soon coming point to
self- satisfaction or confidence-and often to over- confidence.1. The author suggests that, in times of confusion, man often __________.A. stops regular news services

阅读理解。     Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping
because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants,
and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a
shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces
it, and the business of trying it on follows at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in
less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone"s satisfaction.
For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop doesn"t have what he wants. In that case the
salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else, he offers the nearest he can to
the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute impolitely; he does so with skill: "I
know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the
colour you mentioned. "Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is: "This is the
right colour and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on."
Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the
opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she
wants, and she is only "having a look round". She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great
store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of
things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary
to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always
on the lock- out for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend
an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses
she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide
chairs for the waiting husbands.1. According to the passage, when a man is buying clothes,____________.A. he buys cheap things, regardless of quality

B. He usually does not buy anything.
C. At least two of his requirements must be met before he buys.,
D. So long as the style is right, he buys the thing.4. Many jokes make fun of women shoppers by saying that_________ .A .they waste money on inferior( 劣质的 )goods
B. they should buy only the best clothes
C. they are much more sensible than men
D. they think of the price of clothes and nothing else5. Rrhat is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers?A. The fact that men do not try clothes on in a shop.
B. Women bargain for their clothes, but men do not.
C. Women stand up to shop, but men sit down.
D. The time they take over buying clothes.

阅读理解。     When do people decide whether or not they want to become friends? During their first four minutes
together, according to a book by Dr. Leonard Zunin. "Every time you meet someone in a social situation,
give him your undivided attention for four minutes. A lot of people"s whole lives would change if they did
just that."
When we are introduced to new people, we should try to appear friendly and self-confident. In
general, he says, "People like people who like themselves." On the other hand, we should not make the
other person think we are too sure of ourselves.
Hearing such advice, one might say, "But I"m not a friendly, self-confident person. That"s not my
nature. It would be dishonest for me to act that way." In reply, Dr. Zunin would claim that a little practice
can help us feel comfortable about changing our social habits. We can become accustomed to any
changes we choose to make in our personality. "It"s like getting used to a new car. It may be unfamiliar at
first, but it goes much better than the old one."
But isn"t it dishonest to give the appearance of friendly self-confidence when we don"t actually feel that way? Perhaps, but according to Dr. Zunin, "total honesty" is not always good for social relationships,
especially during the first few minutes of contact. There is a time for everything, and a certain amount of
play-acting may be best for the first few minutes of contact with a stranger. That is not the time to
complain about one"s health or to mention faults one finds in other people. It is not the time to tell the
whole truth about one"s opinions and impressions.
The author also declares that interpersonal relations should be taught as a required course in every
school, along with reading, writing, and mathematics. In his opinion, success in life depends mainly on
how we get along with other people. That is at least as important as how much we know.
1. When first introduced to new people, we should __________.A. be friendly and sure of ourselves regardless of the other people"s feeling
B. always tell the whole truth even if it hurts

B. are more important than other courses in school
C. are less important than reading, writing and mathematics
D. is the only key to one"s success in life3. The underlined word "play-acting" in the fourth paragraph means_______.A. being totally honest
B. being a little dishonest
C. acting out what one feels
D. acting in a play4. The best title for the passage could be __________.A. The Key to Success
