All right! Enough cookies, cola, and chips! It seems that junk food (垃圾食物) is all that the children want to eat these days. Television controls their tastes. The kids see well-known per- sonalities eating potato chips, candy and other processed (处理过 的 ) food, and they want to be like their heroes. How do they do it? They eat the same food. I wish there were more characters like old Popeye, the sailor, who ate spinach (菠菜) and not French fries. Now I expect my children to eat healthy food because I like brown rice, beans, and fresh vegetables. I"m glad to cook traditional meals of meat and potatoes for them. I really can"t be too upset with the kids because most adults aren"t careful about what they eat. The other night, my wife and I went to a party where there was plenty to drink but very little for us to eat. They served hot dogs and hamburgers. I can"t eat hot dogs, with all those preservatives (防腐剂) ,and hamburgers are filled with chemicals so that they look better. Besides the meat, they had sugar-filled cookies and cake, and of course, chips. I don"t want the world to change because of me, but I think people should realize that there are choices to eating meat. They always tell me that I probably don"t get my essential (必要的) proteins (蛋白质). I feel better than ever and I"m sure that it"s because I"m a vegetarian (素食者) .I would really like to see more television advertisements which show the benefits of good, healthy, natural food. |

The fried foods, salty snacks and meat are major food of the Western diet, which accounts for about 30 percent of heart attack risk (风险) across the world. Meanwhile, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, the so-called "Prudent" diet, can lower the risk of heart attack, according to a study. The research, which looked at dietary habits in 52 countries, found people who ate a Western diet had a 35 percent greater risk of having a heart attack compared to those who ate little or no fried foods and meat. Those who followed a "Prudent" diet had a 30 percent lower risk of heart attack compared to those who eat little fruits and vegetables. The authors also looked at an "Oriental" diet, rich in tofu, soy and other sauces (酱类), and found it did not increase or decrease the risk of a heart attack. Previous studies have reached similar conclusions about the "Prudent" and Western diet in the United States and Europe, but did not include the Oriental pattern of eating. While some food of the Oriental diet may protect against heart trouble, the higher sodium (钠) content of sauces counter (抵消) that benefit. "This study indicates that the same relationships that are observed in Western countries exist in different regions of the world," a professor of medicine at McMaster University said. Canadian researchers analyzed risk factors in food choices and the risk of heart attack in about 16,000 people in 52 countries. Almost 6,000 people had heart attacks, while the rest had no heart disease. |

The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet... We are surrounded by the word" diet" everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically (身体上). Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brains to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale (秤) instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word" diet" in food labels. On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don"t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle. The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients (营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are potentially dangerous. Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological and physical harm that comes from using them. |
1. From Paragraph 1,we learn that ____ |
A. diet products fail to bring out people"s potential B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products C. diet products are misleading people D. people are fed up with diet products |
2. One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to ____ . |
A. try out a variety of diet foods B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods C. pay attention to their own eating habits D. watch their weight rather than their diet |
3. In Paragraph 3, " gain comes without pain" probably means____. |
A. losing weight is effortless B. it costs a lot to lose weight C. diet products bring no pain D. diet products are free from calories |
4. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because suchproducts____. |
A. are over-consumed B. lack basic nutrients C. are short of chemicals D. provide too much energy |
5. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? |
CP: central point P: point SP: sup-point C: conclusion |

Most Chinese people don"t understand why some westerners don"t eat meat. In China, to eat meat is a sign of wealth. If a westerner doesn"t take a bite of their Peking duck, there is something wrong. But many people in Europe and America choose not to eat meat or fish - they are known as vegetarians. In the US alone there are 12 million vegetarians and 19,000 more people stop eating meat every week. People often become vegetarians in order to lose weight or eat more healthily.A lot of research has shown that vegetarian diets are healthier than the average western diet. Fried chicken may be delicious to eat, but all that extra fat can damage your heart. There are many other reasons for "turning veggie". It could be that you cannot afford to buy meat. Or maybe you just don"t like the taste of it. A large number of vegetarians choose to give up meat because they believe it is cruel to kill animals for food. They believe many animals are not allowed to live in comfort and, when they are killed, it is carried out in a very painful way. While some vegetarians are happy not to eat animals, others take it one step further and refuse to eat any animal product. They are known as vegetarians and will not eat cheese, yogurt (酸奶) and eggs, or drink milk. Neither will they wear clothes or shoes made from animal skin, such as leather. They say that if it is wrong to kill an animal for food, it is worse to kill it for clothing. But there are some groups that go even further. Fruitarians believe it is wrong to kill any living plant or animal. Besides____ ____, they will only eat fruit and vegetables that have not been killed when harvested. This means they cannot take an apple from a tree: they must wait until the apple falls to the ground. Only then can it be considered dead. |

A new weapon is on the way in the fight against smoking in Europe. Soon when smokers buy cigarettes, they might see a shocking photo of a blackened lung or a cancer patient staring back at them from the packet. Some boys may think of smoking ascool and sexy. Their friends won"t agree when they see their packets of cigarettes lying on the table. The European Union announced onOctober 22, that it had chosen 42 photos that showed the damage cigarettes could do to the body. It called on member nations to put these pictures on packets to discourage young smokers. To catch the attention of teenagers, the special packets warn of long-term medical dangers, like cancer. Short-term effects, like bad skin, are also on the list. "The true fact of smoking is disease, death and horror. That is the message we should send to the young," said David Byrne, an EU health official. "Hopefully these pictures will shock students out of their love for cigarettes. " The EU head office hoped the pictures would work better than current written warnings on packs of cigarettes. The warning included "smoking kills" and "smoking can lead to a slow and painful death. " So far, Ireland and Belgium have shown interest in the photos. Canada has used similar pictures and warnings on cigarette packs since 2000. The country has recently seen a fall in the number of smokers. According to studies, smoking is the single biggest cause of avoidable death in EU. Every year more than 650, 000 smokers die, more than one person a minute. |

It is reported that conservation groups in North America have been arguing about the benefits and dangers of wolves. Some groups believe wolves should be killed. Other people believe wolves must be protected so that they will not disappear from the wilderness(荒野). For Killing Wolves In Alaska, the wolves almost disappeared a few years ago, because hunters were killing hundreds of them for sport. However, laws were established to protect the wolves from sportsmen and people who catch the animals for their fur. So the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so many wolves that they are destroying their own food supply. A wolf naturally eats animals in the deer family. People in the wilderness also hunt deer for food. Many of the animals have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by changes in the wilderness plant life. When the deer can"t find enough food, they die. If the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, their prey(猎物)will disappear some day. And the wolves will, too. So we must change the cycle of life in the wilderness to balance the ecology. If we killed more wolves, we would save them and their prey from dying out. We"d also save some farm animals. In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens for food. Farmers want the government to send biologists to study the problem. They believe it necessary to kill wolves in some areas and to protect them in places where there is a small wolf population. Against Killing Wolves If you had lived long ago, you would have heard many different stories about the dangerous wolf. According to most stories, hungry wolves often kill people for food. Even today, the stories of the "big bad wolf" will not disappear. But the fact is wolves are afraid of people. and they seldom travel in areas where there is a human smell. When wolves eat other animals, they usually kill the very young, or the sick and injured. The strongest survive. No kind of animal would have survived through the centuries if the weak members had lived. And has always been a law of nature. Although some people say it is good sense to kill wolves, we say it is nonsense! Researchers have found wolves and their prey living in balance. The wolves keep the deer population from becoming too large, and that keeps a balance in the wilderness plant life. The real problem is that the areas where wolves can live are being used by people. Even if wilderness land is not used directly for human needs. The wolves can"t always find enough food. So they travel to the nearest source, which is often a farm. Then there is danger. The "big bad wolf" has arrived! And everyone knows what happens next. |
