In this way, you"ll feel fuller, so you"ll eat less when the main food comes. (3)An apple (or more) a day Apples are full of fiber (纤维) and water, so your stomach will want less. The study shows that people who eat at least three apples a day lose weight. (4)Stand up and walk around Every time you use the mobile phone, stand up and walk around. Dear Editor (编辑), I used to be a doctor in a children"s hospital. Sometimes I treated children who had been poisoned (中毒) by medicines for older family members. The children didn"t know the medicine was dangerous; they just knew it tasted sweet. Children easily opened the bottle that we now use in China. Some days ago I talked about medicine with an American. He showed me a kind of plastic bottle. The design was very quite simple and I"m sure our Chinese factories could produce these bottles. The top of the bottle locks but can be opened by pressing down on it while turning. This is difficult for most young children to do, though grown-ups can open these bottles very easily. I"m certain that the price of making such tops would be very low. As a doctor, I"d love to see this done. And most parents would be grateful. Yours, Li Hua |

On a rainy day, you will see many streams of muddy (多泥的) water running down the slopes (山坡) of a hill. The water is muddy because it washes away soil from the hill slopes. Sometimes soil is blown away by strong winds. When the soil is carried away by water or wind, we say that the land is eroded (侵蚀). This is known as soil erosion. Plants cannot grow on eroded land. There is not enough soil on eroded land to give them the things they need. Plants need water and salts from the soil. We can do a number of things to stop soil erosion. This is called soil conservation (保护). One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is to grow small plants such as grasses. Their roots hold the soil tightly together. Another way is to plant trees around an open field. Thus soil erosion by strong winds cannot take place. Rows of trees act as a very big wall. Soil erosion on slopes can be stopped by cutting "steps" called terraces (梯田). Water carrying soil cannot run straight down the slope now. It has to run down the terraces. This slows down the flow of the water. Most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces. There are some other ways of soil conservation. |

Africa is home to nearly 700 lakes and rivers. It holds the largest amount of water on earth. Because of the overuse of the lakes, natural climate changes and other factors (因素), these lakes are disappearing quickly. Millions of people in Africa depend on water sources like lakes and rivers for their daily water. In other words, they cannot live without these lakes and rivers. Recent studies by the United Nations show that this loss of water supply is putting a great pressure on the African population. In the 1960s, Lake Chad was nearly 83,200 square feet large. In about forty years, it has lost 95% of its size and it has almost completely dried up. At one time, it was one of the largest lakes in the world, and was around 960,000 square feet around 6,000 years ago. The sizes of lakes and rivers and the amount of water have something to do with seasons naturally. But, pollution and agriculture also play an important part in the loss of water. Many pollutants (污染物) are put into lakes and rivers so that many lakes and rivers are seriously polluted, and the water may be poisonous (有毒的). If something isn"t done soon about the disappearing lakes and rivers, there will not be enough water for everyone. Then many people in Africa will face diseases and possible dehydration (脱水). |

These American self-help books have been translated into more than thirty-nine languages including Chinese, Arabic, Russian, French, German, Greek and Spanish. "Dummy" is a word for a stupid person. The publishers say that the books do not provide more information than necessary. They give readers just enough information to do what they want. They say that the dummies books give the best and easiest way to do something. And the books use simple and easy language. There are more than one thousand different dummies books. A report in New York Times says that the top-selling dummies books are those that explain technology and personal finance. The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it. Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world. Air pollution is still the most serious. It"s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution. The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time. |

4. Which of the following is NOT true? |
[ ] |
A. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. B. The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world population does. C. The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people living on the earth. D. If people could go to work by bus or bike instead of car or motorbike, it would be helpful in fighting against the problem of SO2. |
