I’d meant to go to Miros that day. I’d packed my bag and was ready. The motor-boat in on time. The sky was cloudy, but the wind wasn’t too strong for the two-hour . I stood at my window, staring at the boat. Then I lost of her, an old light-house partly blocked my view of the harbor. A dozen passengers were their way there. I was about to join them --- when a man’s face at the light-house window. This was strange, because the light-house had been empty, unused and for thirty years. It was stranger still --- because I’d seen that before. I couldn’t place it but it was, or had once been, familiar to me. I opened my window and across. “I know we’ve met before, but I can’t remember where.” I him to open his if he could and answer me. He did neither. The face behind the glass motionless (静止). Seeing him more clearly now, I knew he was not looking at me. He seemed to be looking upwards, the clouds. How well I’d known that face, sometime, somewhere! I again. “We met years ago. Was it in Athens in the 1950s? I used to live in Plaka.” He didn’t reply nor give any that he’d heard. I went back further, to I was in the navy. “Perhaps we met at sea during the war,” and that thought at once him to mind. Commander Leftis! He was Commander Leftis of course! How could I have forgotten? I’d saved his life once. But surely he … The motor-boat her bell. I turned my eyes. The wind had risen, but she was pulling . Laughing, I called, “Now I’ve missed her, and it’s your , Commander!” As the boat drew away, the face at the window faded. minute it was there. Looking up, I could see the whites of the eyes. The minute it was gone. Well, I didn’t rush to the light-house. I knew that Leftis was dead. He died at sea in 1963 or 1964. But there’s one other thing I ought to tell you: the motor-boat never reached Miros. It was lost in a storm, with all the passengers.

I consider myself something of an expert on apologies. A quick temper has me with plenty of opportunities to make them. In one of my earlier , my mother was telling me“Don’t watch the when you say, ‘I’m sorry’. Hold your head up and look at the person in the , so he’ll know you it. ”
My mother thus made the key point of a(n) apology: It must be direct. You must never to be doing something else. You do not a pile of letters while apologizing to a person in position after blaming him or her for a mistake that turned out to be your . You do not apologize to a hostess, whose guest of honor you treat , by sending flowers the next day without mentioning your bad . One of the important things we should do for an apology is a readiness to the responsibility for our careless mistakes. We are used to making excuses, which leaves no for the other person to us. Since most people are open-hearted, the no-excuse apology leaves both parties feeling about themselves. That, after all, is the of every apology. It little whether the apologizer is wholly or only partly at fault. Answering for one’s encourages others to take their share of the blame.

A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps. One should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men. A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It always receives us with the same kindness; amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting us in age. Men often discover their similarity to each other by the common love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb, “Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdom in this: “Love my, love my book.” The book is a truer and higher bond(纽带) of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them. A good book is often the best container of a life preserving the best that life could think out; for the world of a man’s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which become our steady companions and comforters. Books are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay(腐朽), but good books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author’s minds, ages ago. The great and good do not die, even in this world. Preserved in books, their spirits walked abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect(智者) to which one still listens. 小题1:The writer introduces the topic of the passage by .A.describing life experience of great writers | B.telling his own story of reading good books | C.presenting the best thoughts in good books | D.comparing good books to good friends in life | 小题2:What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Readers feel sympathy for the author. | B.Readers live together with the author. | C.Readers and the author share the same feeling. | D.Readers are the author’s companions and comforters. | 小题3:which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.We can learn about the great and good through books. | B.The most important part of a man’s life is his treasures. | C.Good books help us to know about their authors’ friends. | D.Books are often regarded as best containers in our life. | 小题4:the passage mainly tells us that . A. one should have some good friends B one should read as many books as possible C. one should keep company with good books D books are the most lasting products of human efforts |
That summer an army of crickets(蟋蟀) started a war with my father. Dad didn’t care for insects much more than Mamma, but he could tolerate a few living in the basement. Mamma was a city girl and she said a cricket was just too noisy. Then to support her point she wouldn’t go to bed. She drank coffee and smoked my father’s cigarettes and paced between the sofa and the TV. Next morning she threatened to pack up and leave, so Dad drove to the store and hurried back. He sprayed poison from a jug. When he was finished he told us that was the end of it. For a couple of weeks we went back to find dead crickets in the laundry. He suggested that we’d all be better off to hide as many as we could from Mamma. I fed a few dozen to the cat who I didn’t like because he scratched for no reason. However, soon live crickets started showing up in the kitchen and bathroom. Mamma was upset because she thought they were the dead crickets coming back, but Dad said these were certainly new ones. He fetched his jug of poison and sprayed all over until the whole house smelled of poison, and then he sprayed the basement again. A couple of weeks later, when both live and dead crickets kept turning up, Dad emptied the basement of junk. Then he burned a lot of old newspapers and magazines which he said the crickets had turned into nests. While we ate supper that evening, the wind lifted some flames onto the wood pile. The only gasoline was in the lawn mower’s(割草机) fuel tank but that was enough to create an explosion big enough to reach the house. Once the roof caught, there wasn’t much anyone could do. After the fire trucks left, Mamma took the others to Aunt Gail’s. I helped Dad and Uncle Burt carry things out of the house and pile them by the road. We worked into the night and we didn’t talk much, while all around the noise of crickets broke our silence. 小题1:What do we know about the author’s mother?A.She didn’t like insects at all. | B.She liked insects more than his father. | C.She cared for insects very much. | D.She could only tolerate a few insects. | 小题2:The author’s father drove to the store to buy _______. During my elementary school years, I used to compare my mom with my best friend Tiffany’s mom. Tiffany’s mom always gave her lots of money to buy the most fashionable clothes and favorite food. Her mom allowed her to do anything she liked. I really admired Tiffany. My mom didn’t give me much pocket money and she always told me that I should behave myself. I was annoyed with her. Whenever I didn’t get what I wanted, I would complain to my mom, Tiffany’s mom would give her that! I wish she were my mom. Every time, my mom would calmly say “Poor Tiffany”. I couldn’t understand her. “She shouldn’t be feeling sorry for Tiffany!” I thought. “She should be feeling sorry for me.” One day, I couldn’t help saying to Mom, “Poor Tiffany? Lucky Tiffany! She gets everything she wants! Why do you feel sorry for her?” I burst out crying. My mom sat down next to me and said softly. “Yes, I do feel sorry for her. I have been teaching you a lesson that she will never be taught.” I looked up at her. “What are you talking about?” Mom said with care, “One day she will really want something. Maybe she’ll find out that she can’t have it. Her mother won’t always be around to give her money, and what’s more, money can’t buy everything.”
