When I met him,I had a lot of anger inside me. I’ve lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in my neighborhood, there are shoot-ups all the time. I know kids who have been shot or beaten up. I have friends who ended up in prison. I could have ended up that way, too, but Mr. Clark wouldn’t let that happen. Mr. Clark worked long hours, making sure I did my work. My grades rose. In fact, the scores of our whole class rose. One day,he took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera, and it was the first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show,he treated us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full. We did not want to let him down. Mr. Clark was selected as Disney’s 2000 Teacher of the Year. He said he would draw three names out of a hat;those students would go with him to Los Angles to get the award. But when the time came to draw names,Mr. Clark said,“You’re all going.” On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn’t want his class to end. In 2001,he moved to Atlanta, but he always kept in touch. He started giving lectures about education, and wrote a bestsell -ing book based on his classroom rules,The Essential 55. In 2003,Mr. Clark took some of us on a trip to South Africa to deliver school supplies and visit orphanages(孤儿院). It was the most amazing experience of my life. It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货), saving us from having to walk along long distances from where we live. I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before. People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting. 小题1:Why was the bike so important to the couple?A.They used it for work and daily life. | B.It was their only possession(财产). | C.It was a nice Kona 18 speed. | D.The man‘s job was bike racing. | 小题2:We can infer from the passage that __________.A.the couple worked 60 hours a week | B.people were busy before Christmas | C.the stranger brought over the bike | D.life was hard for the young family | 小题3:How did people get to know the couple’s problem?A.From a stranger. | B.From a newspaper. | C.From TV news | D.From radio broadcasts. | 小题4:What do the couple learn from their experience?A.Strangers are usually of little help. | B.One should take care of their bike. | C.News reports make people famous. | D.An act of kindness can mean a lot. | 小题5:From this story, we can see humanity is __________.A.selfish | B.commercial | C.kind | D.cold-hearted |

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas(胰腺). I didn’t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that was incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which was doctor’s code for preparing to die. It meant to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It meant to make sure everything was buttoned up so that it would be as easy as possible for your family. It meant to say your goodbyes. I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy(活组织检查). I was calm, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now. This is the closest I’ve been to facing death. No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by the principle — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. 小题1:The author"s main purpose in writing the passage is to let the readers __________.A.be brave when facing a cancer | B.treasure their lifetime to fulfill their own business | C.know a sorrowful experience of his won | D.know how he treasured his family. | 小题2:Why can the author"s illness be cured so soon?A.He prepared everything in order. | B.He had a biopsy. | C.His pancreatic cancer can be curable with surgery. | D.His wife helped him. | 小题3:The impression the author gave readers is that __________.A.he was so optimistic that the incurable illness wouldn"t bring him down. | B.he could leave death alone and had enough courage to become what he wanted to. | C.he was so determined that he wasn"t scared at death. | D.he was such a responsible man that he prepared well before he died. | 小题4:What does the underlined word "they" in the last paragraph refer to?A.Gods. | B.The doctors | C.Heart and intuition | D.Other persons |

I still remember the last time I went to the playground with two of my children. It had rained during the night and the playground was very muddy (泥泞的). They had just put on clean clothes, so I was a little worried about the mud on the playground. It was not long before Kathy got her beautiful skirt dirty on the playground. She dug through the rocks. I was about to blame (指责) her for getting her clothes dirty when she ran towards me with a smile on her face. When she got to me, she handed me a little heart-shaped rock and said, “Here, Mom! Here is a heart for you —just because I love you! Keep it!” With tears in my eyes, I thanked her. Should I blame her for getting her clothes muddy? No way! I still have that little heart-shaped rock. It is one of the best gifts that I have ever received. I realized that many times it was not necessary for us adults to worry about the small things our children did. Let them do what they’d like to. I will spend a lot more time on the playground with my children. I’m sure I will learn a lot from them. It makes me think of the days when my grandfather told me, “You would not enter the kingdom of happiness until you pretended (假装) to be a small child.” 小题1:At first, the author wanted to blame Kathy because she __________. A.ran on the playground | B.dug through rocks | C.gave her a muddy rock | D.got her clothes dirty | 小题2:The author was deeply moved by her daughter’s _____.A.digging task on the playground | B.special way to show her love | C.smile on her face when running | D.love of the muddy playground | 小题3:From Paragraph 2, we can learn that the author thought parents should _________. When I was struggling with cancer a few years ago,my wife and I formed our own “couple caution circle”.Anytime a doctor came with news of my progress,my wife would give me a big hug. The reports were seldom good during the early stages of my illness, and one day a doctor brought particularly frightening news.Staring at my reports,he said in a low voice,“It doesn’t look like you’re going to make it.” Before I could ask him a question,my wife stood up,handed me my clothes, adjusted the tubes fastened to my body and said,“Let’s get out of here. This man is a risk to your health.” As she helped me struggle to the door, the doctor came near us.“Stay back,” demanded my wife.“Stay away from us.” As we walked together down the hall, the doctor attempted to catch up with us.“Keep going,” said my wife, pushing the intravenous (静脉注射的) stand.“We’re going to talk to someone who really knows what is going on.” Then she held up her hand to the doctor.“Don’t come any closer to us.” The two of us moved as one.We escaped to the safety and hope of a doctor who did not confuse diagnosis with conclusion. I could never have made that walk toward wellness alone. 小题1:From the passage we know ________.A.hearing that the husband was not going to make it,the wife went out of her mind | B.the wife’s decision in crisis (危机) contributed to the husband’s wellness | C.the husband was diagnosed with cancer by mistake | D.the husband became weaker and weaker as a result of the treatment conducted by the doctor | 小题2:What’s the author’s feeling when writing the passage?A.Angry. | B.Thankful. | C.Excited. | D.Sad. | 小题3:What can be inferred from the passage ?A.The wife was a woman hard to get along with. | B.The doctor was a dangerous man. | C.The wife loved her husband very much. | D.The husband was a man who believed everything would be OK. | 小题4:What would be the best title for the passage ?A.A Happy Couple In Crisis | B.Struggle With Cancer | C.In Crisis,Become As One | D.Don’t Believe The Doctor |
