A young boy was sitting in the back seat of the car eating an apple. He asked his father, “Why does my apple turn brown?” his father answered, “When the skin is removed, air reaches the flesh of the apple and causes oxidation. This changes the apple’s molecular structure and results in a brownish color.” The boy asked, “ Daddy, what are you talking about?” I know how that boy feels. Sometimes I want answers to some of those confusing questions that we all meet with, such as how to get through difficult times or what to do in a tough situation. I just want to get it right. The problem is that I don’t always have the answer I need. Nobody else seems to have them, either. So I go on making mistakes and think that I’ll never get it right. Often I didn’t know what to do. I often made poor choices, but I gradually improved. Then I realized that I don’t HAVE TO always get it right. I don’t have to always know what to do all the time. All I really need to do is try my best, learn from my mistakes and go on. Dr. Leo Buscaglia once said, “ No one gets out of this world alive, so the time to live, learn, care, share, celebrate and love is now. That would be pretty hard to do when you’re waiting for all the answers first.” So you got it wrong. You made a mistake. So what should you do next? Forgive yourself and try again. You may not get out of this world alive, but you can get plenty of life out of this world if you are not too worried about always getting it right. 小题1: In the beginning, the author tells the story of a boy and his father to ____.A.show that the father is very knowledgeable | B.say something interesting about apples | C.introduce the subject of the passage | D.show that children nowadays ask more questions | 小题2: How did the boy feel when he heard his father’s explanation?A.He admired his father very much. | B.He knew what his father meant. | C.He thought that he had learned a lot from his father. | D.He felt it was difficult to understand. | 小题3: What do Dr. Leo Buscaglia’s words mean?A.We must make right choices as often as possible. | B.We can search the answers when enjoying life itself. | C.People have many desires when they enter the world. | D.It is hard to lead a happy and satisfying life. | 小题4: What can be concluded from the passage?A.We should learn from our mistakes and try again. | B.We should try to learn and understand the answers to questions. | C.It is very important to try to avoid mistakes. | D.It is our duty to make the world a better place. | 小题5: What is the style of the passage? Honesty comes in many forms. First there’s self-honesty. Is what people see the real article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something I’m not. I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA(personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it. “Always be a first-class version(版本) of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else. ” Then there’s honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you’ve ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you can’t do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn’t do well. I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. I’d write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off. At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn’t thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn’t do that any more, because I wasn’t really helping them. They weren’t learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasn’t helping me. It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit(储蓄) into your PBA and will build strength. 小题1:The underlined part “appear through smoke and mirrors” in the FIRST paragraph means________.A.to be unreal | B.to be honest | C.to become clear | D.to come from an imagined world | 小题2:Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland’s words? A.Don’t copy others or you can’t be the first class. | B.Be your true self rather than follow others. | C.Make efforts to be the first instead of the second. | D.Don’t learn from others unless they’re excellent. | 小题3:What does the author expect to show by Jeff’s story? A.Honesty can be of great help. | B.A bad thing can be turned into a good one. | C.One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds. | D.Helping others cheat can do good to nobody. | 小题4:In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express________.A.one must be brave to be honest | B.it’s difficult to be honest when others are not | C.one should be honest when making a deposit | D.honesty in one’s actions can help him in the future |

My father never wanted his children to know what he did for a living.Dad worked in Plant C.Lying beside lake Erie, it saw him in at sunrise and out at nightfall.Sometimes my mother would take my siblings (兄弟姐妹) and me to the public beach in our hometown of Ashtabula. she"d gather us round and point to the smokestacks, coughing clouds into the sky. "Wave to daddy!" she"d shout. Four little hands would shoot into the air.I never knew what Dad did in Plant C, but during 34 years of hard work, he had surgery (手术) on his shoulder and hand.At 48, he had his first heart attack. He retired in 1993, right after the last kid graduated from college. But the damage was done.A few years later, the next heart attack killed him. I saw my dad in Plant C only once, when I took dinner to him. That night, I looked at my father, covered in sweat and coal, and for the first time I knew why he was so often angry for no reason. Recently my father" s friend, Toby Workman, walked me there.I knew my father never wanted me to see it.At every station, he described the job and the danger. It was like listening to a foreign language.I walked past many DANGER signs.Toby put his hand on my shoulder."look," he said, "you need to understand something.Your dad was a maintenance mechanic. He worked the most dangerous job.If something broke, he fixed it." A few days later, my daughter graduated from college.I gave her the hard hat Toby handed to me as I left, and this notes: " Whenever you feel something difficult, put this on, look in the mirror, and remember your roots." 小题1:How many siblings does the author most probably have? ____. Are you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that generally things turn out for the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist. You probably are enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may well be successful atwork and in love.
But you may be misguided because things don’t turn out for the best. You may believe that when one door closes another one opens (for example, you may fail to obtain a new job, another chance will come around soon), Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams in your face. That"s bitter reality. Now a book has been published which confirms what we pessimists(悲观者)have suspected all along. It"s called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for things by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What’s interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation’s outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better. ” So far, so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on a date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a back-up plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution. For example, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” and “ Don’t count your chickens until they hatch. “ To have a confident and optimistic approach to life’s problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says, ”Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.” There are pros and cons to being an optimist and a pessimist. Don’t feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist. But lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full. 小题1:What is the passage mainly about?A.A book that has recently been published. | B.The dangers of being too optimistic. | C.How to become successful in life. | D.The benefits of defensive pessimism. | 小题2:The underlined sentence “This is not rocket science” in paragraph 4 means .A.it is quite simple to understand | B.there is no real proof | C.it’s not a dangerous thing to do | D.the cost is not so high | 小题3:The writer would probably describe himself as .A.an optimist | B.a defeatist | C.a realist | D.a scientist | 小题4:Which of the following English expressions would a defensive pessimist believe? A.“Every cloud has a silver lining.” | B.“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” | C.“Whatever will be, will be.” | D.“The glass is half full not half empty.” |

Are you a man or a mouse? When people ask this question they want to know 31 you are a 32 person or a coward(懦夫). But you will never really know the answer to this question 33 you are tested in real life. Some people 34 they are brave but when they come face to face with real 35 , they act like cowards. Others think of themselves as cowards, but when they meet danger, they act like 36 . Lenny had always thought of himself as a 37 person. He got worried before examinations. He worried about his job and health. All he wanted in life was to be safe and healthy. 38 , on January 15th, 2002, a plane crashed into the Potomac River in Washington. Lenny went to the river to see what was happening. He saw a woman in the 39 water. Lenny did not feel afraid. He kept very 40 and did a very dangerous thing. He jumped into the Potomac, 41 to the woman, and kept her head 42 the water. Seventy-eight people died that day. Thank to Lenny, it was not 43 . When you are in a very 44 situation and feel afraid, the body automatically produces a chemical in the blood. The chemical is called adrenalin(肾上腺素). 45 adrenalin in the blood system, you will feel stronger and stronger and are 46 to fight or run away. However, when you are absolutely terrified, the body can produce too much adrenalin. When this 47 , the muscles become very hard and you find you 48 move at all. You are then paralyzed(使瘫痪,使麻痹) with fear. This is 49 when we are very frightened, we sometimes say we’re “petrified”, which means “stone”. We are very frightened 50 we become stonelike.
