Stop wasting your time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings.Instead,  realize that the
seeds of success were planted within you when you were born.Only you have the power to make those
seeds grow.
The seeds and the power to grow them are contained in the human mind.Success is a choice but not a
chance. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing yourselfesteem (自尊). Your level of selfesteem is
always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself,  and thus over your life.People with low selfesteem do not believe that they have any power,  or responsibility for their lives. They
are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance brought about with any sudden change in the weather.
You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for whatever happens in your life.Failures think that everything happens by accident while successful people
realize that they are responsible.
Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause,  we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we consciously choose to accept and believe.Thoughts and beliefs cause
everything. Our attitudes and actions are a result of habits ingrained in us over a period of time. One
generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success
depends upon our level of confidence. We are responsible for either reinforcing good habits or kicking
bad habits and consciously replacing them with consistently practiced good habits.
If you associate with positivethinking people,  you are definitely going to achieve success. On the
contrary,  the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding,  planting,  and nurturing (培育) the seeds
that contain future victory,  born from setbacks.
In short,  in all areas of your life,  whether they are financial,  physical,  emotional,  or spiritual,  you are responsible.Once you recognize this,  accept it,  and firmly believe it,  you are on the road to success.

阅读理解      You wake up in the morning, the day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been
looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing (令人沮丧的) tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his
morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to.Are you still in a wonderful mood?Impossible!
Communicating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think,
but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.
Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to
offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad.No wonder they can hardly win others" pity or
respect.
When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger (匕首) of a negative person is put in you,you have the heavy feeling that all
in all,brings you down.
Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. This could be a coworker,or a relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible.Sometimes it feels good to let out your anger back to the negative person, but all this does is to lower you to that same negative level and they
won"t feel ashamed of themselves about that.
Negativity often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of another at the
start of the day can cling to (附着) you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and
steals your happiness.Life is too short to feel negative.Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as
possible.

1.The purpose of the first paragraph is to________.

A.make a comparison
B.offer an evidence
C.introduce a topic
D.describe a daily scene

2.How can negative people have effect on us?

A.By influencing our emotion.
B.By telling us the nature of life.
C.By changing our way of thinking.
D.By comparing their attitude to life with ours.

3.Some negative people base their happiness on________.

A.other people"s pity for them
B.making other people unhappy
C.building up a positive attitude
D.other people"s respect for them

4.According to the passage,to reduce negative people"s influence on us,we are advised________.

A.to change negative people"s attitude to life
B.to show our dissatisfaction to negative people
C.to make negative people feel ashamed of themselves
D.to communicate with negative people as little as possible

阅读理解    Frankly,I appreciate myself very much.Yes,I admit I"m in many aspects not as good as other people, but
I don"t think I"m always not good. When I find what I"ve done or written is okay,I"ll remain pleased with my
self for quite a few days, and if I receive praise for it,I"ll even become so excited as to add a few words to
reward myself.
True,I"m not modest at all.People may call me conceited (自负的).But I think otherwise.
I appreciate other people.I appreciate anything good.Isn"t it unfair to forget appreciating myself while
appreciating others?
We Chinese generally tend to be modest, and we take pride in being so.For example,a Chinese man will
call his own wife zhuojing, meaning"my humble wife",and his own writings zhuozuo, meaning"my poor
writings".But if you call his wife a "rustic (乡村的) woman" or his writings"trash",he would,I"m sure,
declare he would make a clean break with you angrily. As a matter of fact, there is probably no difference
at all between what is said by him and you.
I don"t think it"s wrong of you to freely praise yourself if you"re really worthy of praise. As we know, there
is an old Chinese saying disparaging (蔑视) a melon seller, named Lao Wang, who keeps praising his own
goods.Well, why can"t he praise his melons if they are really sweet and juicy?
Lao Wang sells melons for a living. How could he carry on business if he,by imitating the affectations
(装模作样) of us intellectuals, were to show false modesty about his melons? He would sure enough die of
starvation.
Selfappreciation is therefore a key to professional dedication and enjoyment of work.Needless to say,
the same is true of those who make a living with their pen.One will lose confidence in writing when he stops
admiring his own essays.1.We know from the first three paragraphs that the author________.A.is modest in some way
B.is pleased to be a good writer
C.is too conceited
D.thinks it unfair to appreciate others2.What do we know about the author"s attitude towards Chinese modesty according to Paragraph 4?A.Supportive.
B.Negative.
C.Neutral.
D.Careless.3.The author mentions the example of Lao Wang to prove that______.A.Lao Wang is very proud of himself
B.melon sellers should praise their goods
C.reasonable selfappreciation is good
D.writers should learn from Lao Wang4.The purpose of the passage is to encourage readers to be________.A.modest
B.considerate
C.respectful
D.confident

阅读理解     The first weeks were a bit hard.Loneliness wasn"t the problem-I was in constant contact with clients by
email and phone. But I did feel claustrophobic (患幽闭恐怖症的).With wheels on my desk chair and
the refrigerator just two feet away,I could work for twelve straight hours without ever standing up.There
was no physical separation between my living room and work table,so the only way I found to feel like I
was going "home" at the end of the day was to forbid my use of the working chair. At ninethirty at night,
when I turned my computer off,I felt a bit like the family dog reaching the high point of its day,"Whoohoo!
I get to go for a walk!" Then, around eleventhirty,I"d find myself turning on the computer again to solve
some work issue that was preoccupying me...
At the same time,I discovered that working this way had definite advantages. Not only did I save an
hour from going to work and back home,I also gained a great deal of control over my time. There were
fewer interruptions than in an office,I could schedule meetings and phone calls in blocks to increase the
productive time around them, and the easy access to my workspace late at night and on weekends could
obviously be of mixed effects. This was especially important to me since,in addition to consulting work,I
was writing fiction and planning a new business.Working at home allowed me to manage all of these
activities at once without losing significant sleep. This turned out to be well worth the claustrophobia, which
also faded as I became more used to the new routine.A short walk in the late afternoon could reduce the
shutin feeling and make me get energetic again to work through the evening.
You might think that, with all this added time flexibility,I would even find a few hours to clean my
apartment, but, unfortunately, this never happened.1.The writer felt claustrophobic because________.A.she was lonely
B.she worked long hours
C.she couldn"t go for a walk
D.she worked alone for long2.Where does the writer work?A.In her own home.
B.In an office.
C.In a hospital.
D.At a newspaper.3.What does the writer think of working late at night and on weekends?A.It was convenient for her.
B.It had advantages and disadvantages.
C.She didn"t like it at all.
D.She enjoyed working late.4.What"s the writer"s general attitude towards her work?A.She didn"t like it very much.
B.She enjoyed doing her work.
C.It allowed her little spare time.
D.It was too hard for her.
