John Brown, an office worker, lives in Washington, and he inherited (继承) $1 000 000 when he was 23. He didn"t feel happy at all. His college friends were looking for their first jobs, but he didn"t have to. John decided to keep living a simple life like everyone else. He didn"t tell any of his friends and gave $100 000 of his money to a charity (慈善团体) that helped poor children to live better lives. Today he is 36. He still wears cheap shoes and clothes and owns a small car only, but he is much happier. Up to now John has helped 15 children from poor countries all over the world, $200 a month for each. The child does not receive the money in cash (现金). The money pays for the child"s school expenses, food, medical care and clothing. John receives a report each year on the child"s progress. They can write to each other, but usually the children do not speak English. When John first heard about these children, he wanted to help them."It was not anything special," he said. "Until I had the chance to go to these countries and meet the children I was helping, I did not know anything about the type of life they had." Once John went to meet a little girl in Africa. He said that the meeting was very exciting."When I met her, I felt very happy," he said,"I saw that the money was used for a very good plan. It brought me closer to the child in a way that giving money alone cannot.""I want to do everything I can. I will go on helping those children in need," he added.

"Be proud of what you do," my father always told me, "whether you are a boss or a cleaner." 1 当我15岁时, I got a summer job in a hospital. I was told that my duties would include sweeping floors, washing dishes and cleaning toilets. I smiled and remembered dad"s words." Even though my job was the lowest, 2 It made me feel excited. I regarded it as a challenge 3 因为它是 我的第一份工作. I learned to be on time and tried to do everything well. In return, I was treated with respect by doctors, nurses, and patients. Each morning I imagined that the dirty dishes would make patients more sick if I were not there to wash them clean. After breakfast was done, I started sweeping the floors of all patients" rooms and cleaning toilets. Though I was tired, I wanted my job to be done well. People would say, 4 "That young man can always do everything well." Working in the hospital taught me that being proud of one"s job is very important. I have swept the floors, and I have been a manager."Be proud of what you do." 5 my father"s words have deeply influenced me all my life. And I"m sure dad must be proud of me.

The following story took place long ago in Israel. One day when government officials were rebuilding a barn (谷仓), they found a mouse hole in a corner and used smoke to make the mice inside the hole come out. A while later they saw mice running out, one after another. Then, everyone thought that all the mice had run away. But when they started to clean up, they saw two mice squeezing (挤) out at the exit of the hole. After a while, the mice finally got out. The strange thing was that after they came out of the hole, they did not run away immediately. Instead, one chased after the other near the exit of the hole. It seemed that one was trying to bite the tail of the other. Everyone was puzzled, so they went closer to take a look. They realized that one of the mice was blind and could not see anything, and the other one was trying to allow the blind mouse to bite on his tail so he could pull the blind one with him to run away. After seeing what happened, everyone was speechless and lost in thought. During meal time, the group of people sat down and started to chat about what happened to the two mice. One serious official said:"I think the relationship (关系) between those two mice was that of emperor (皇帝) and minister (大臣)." The others thought for a while and said:"That was why!" A smart Israel said:"I think the relationship between those two mice was husband and wife." Again the others thought for a while, and all felt it made sense; so they agreed with him. A Chinese said:"I think the relationship between those two mice was that of mother and son." Once again the others thought for a while, and felt this was more reasonable. So they agreed with him another time. At that moment, one Samaritan looked at other people, and asked:"Why did those two mice have to have a certain relationship?" Suddenly, the group looked back at the Samaritan and remained speechless. The Rome official, the Israeli and the Chinese who had spoken earlier all did not dare to answer. In fact, the true love is not based on benefit (利益), friendship or blood relationship. Instead, it is based on no relationship.
