阅读短文,选择正确答案。       As many as 10 of the 17 kinds of penguins (企鹅) may be in danger of disappearing. The number of
penguins have decreased (减少) by 30% since 1987.
Penguins are black and white birds that live in the southern part of the world. They are common in South
America, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Many live near cold waters. But some live near warm waters
in Galapagos Islands. Penguins cannot fly, but they are fine swimmers. Penguins eat fish and krill (磷虾).
The warming of the earth is the decrease in penguin populations. The heating of the air has caused ocean
waters to become warmer. Higher water temperatures have reduced the supply of fish and krill. Some years later
these birds are completely unable to reproduce (繁殖). Besides, many adult penguins die of hunger.
Widespread (广泛的) fishing, exploration for oil and oil leaks (漏) also make penguins be in danger.
Poisonous organisms (生物) in ocean water are another danger. Penguins also have their enemies, including
wild dogs, sharks, seals and sea lions.
News about penguins is not all bad, however. Several years ago, oil leaking from a ship hurt 40% of the
penguins in South Africa. The penguins became covered with oil. But thousands of people helped clean and treat
the birds well. Then they returned the penguins to the wild. Now these South African penguins are reproducing
in higher numbers than before the oil leaking. 1. Penguins ________. [     ]
A. can swim better than fly
B. can be found near Oceania (大洋洲)
C. eat fish only
D. live only in cold waters. 2. Which of the following is NOT the cause of penguin"s decrease in numbers? [     ]
A. Oil searching.
B. Widespread fishing.
C. Human"s killing.
D. Warming of the oceans. 3. Why are the penguins in South Africa reproducing in higher numbers than before the oil leaking? [     ]
A. Because people removed the ship.
B. Because people sent a lot of penguins to the wild.
C. Because people helped the penguins.
D. Because people treated the penguins well. 4. What"s the best title of the passage? [     ]
A. Penguins
B. Penguins May Be in Danger of Disappearing
C. Help the Disappearing Penguins.
D. The Number of the Penguins in South Africa is Getting More Than Before

Orlando, Florida — Is it hard for you to get up early and get ready for classes? Some students at Winter
Park High School can quickly get up just in their clothes for sleeping and go to class in their own bedrooms. Of
course, their teachers and classmates do not see them because all their class work is on the computer.
This school, the state"s only online school, has 250 students who are taking classes at home by computer.
"I feel a lot more comfortable at home," says Luke Levesque, a 16-year-old student who is taking a
computer class online. He thinks the school"s computer lad is so noisy that he can"t study well. "Home is much
better," he says.
When a student is ready to begin a class, he or she turns on the computer, reads the teacher"s instructions
(指示), and begins working on the lessons for the day. What happens if a student has a question for the teacher?
Or the teacher wants to say something about the work a student is doing? The student and the teacher can talk
to each other every day through e-mail or by telephone. For example, when Luke opened his daily e-mail from
the teacher, it contained (包含) her instructions for the day"s computer lesson. When he finished, he sent his
work back by e-mail to her for correcting.
Is it easy for students to cheat on tests when they"re working at home? The teachers have already thought
about this. They make students take their final exams in person in the classroom.
If this first online program goes well, in three years Florida"s high school students will be able to take all
their classes by computer. When that happens, students will be able to get their high school diplomas (文凭)
without having to set foot in a classroom.
1. Winter Park High School is _______.
[     ]
A. one of the online schools in Florida
B. an ordinary high school in Florida
C. in fact Luke Levesque"s own bedroom
D. the only online school in Florida
2. Luke likes taking classes at home because _______.
[     ]
A. he feels more comfortable at home
B. his school has not enough computers
C. he can learn what he likes at home
D. he doesn"t need to face his teachers
3. Students can talk to each other and to the teacher _______.
[     ]
A. face to face
B. through e-mail or by telephone
C. only by telephone
D. only through e-mail
4. What can we know from the passage?
[     ]
A. In three years, all the school students in Florida can take their lessons by computer.
B. All the Florida"s high school students can get their diplomas without going to their classrooms.
C. Computers and the Internet will be used more and more widely in school.
D. No students will have to attend school.
任务型阅读。阅读下列短文,根据短文中的信息完成文后表格。(每空一词)
In the past, man did not have to think about the protection of his environment. There were not many people
on earth, and natural resources seemed to be unlimited.
Today, things are different. The world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources too
quickly, and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue like
this, human life on earth will not survive.
Everyone realizes today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet, with
modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are cut down, forests
will disappear and nothing will grow on the land. Yet, we continue to use bigger and more powerful machines to
cut down more and more trees.
We realize that if rivers are polluted with waste products from factories, we will die. However, in most
countries waste products are still put into rivers or into the sea, and there are few laws to stop this.
We know, too, that if the population of the world continues to rise at the present rate, in a few years, there
will not be enough food.
What can we do to solve these problems?
If we eat more vegetables and less meat, we will easily get more food. Land that is used to grow crops can
feed five times more people than land where animals are kept.
The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control.
Finally, if we educate people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner living place in
the future.

In China, many people are leaving the countryside to find jobs in the cities, because the countryside is much
poorer than the city, and often there isn"t much work there. Services such as hospital and transport (交通) are
usually much better in the city than in the countryside. They hope that their lives will improve when they move
to the city.
But in the big cities of Europe like London or Pads, people are moving out of the city. These rich families

the cities, other people move to the real countryside with sheep, cows and green fields. There, they start new
