People at home keep asking me, "Is it hard Why have you learned it so well?" Well, there"s one thing that makes Chinese easy to learn: there are so many people to talk to.to learn Chinese? You"ve probably heard that it"s the most spoken language. Today it"s also one of the most written languages online. And with so many Chinese people interested in learning English, it couldn"t be easier to find a friend for language learning. You just have to know where to look for them.
The really good place to look for them is QQ. QQ has the same status(地位) in China as AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) does in the US. It is reported that at any moment, up to 9,000,000 people are using QQ. They"re at work, or in a web café, or at home, and the information of the users can be found. If you sign on with your address set to "abroad", you"ll soon find that many thousands of them are interested in speaking to you! This is a great way for you to learn Chinese, and for them to learn English. I think that it"s a very interesting way of cultural contact(文化交流), too, for ordinary people from around the world to be able to have one-on-one contact.

Since the first Earth Day started on April 22, 1970, people around the world have been encouraged to protect the environment and natural resources.Gaylord Nelson started this holiday. On the first Earth Day, 20 million people took part in Earth Day events.
Earth Day activities can include learning something about technology like cars that are more environmentally friendly and special houses that save energy and water. An organization called the Earth Day Network encourages people to use clean energy which doesn’t pollute the environment. Most of our energy comes from fossil fuels (化石燃料) that are found underground. Coal, oil and natural gas are examples of fossil fuels.Fossil fuels come from plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. Burning fossil fuels to create energy pollutes the air and water. Many scientists think that burning fossil fuels also increases the temperature of the earth. To reduce the use of fossil fuels. scientists are experimenting with hydrogen-powered (氢化发动的) cars. These cars don’t pollute the air like gas-powered cars.
Some scientists guess that by 2025, fossil fuels will run out. When people can no longer use gasoline, they may use fuel cells instead. Fuel cells use hydrogen to create energy. People do not need to worry about hydrogen running out, because it is renewable and replaceable.
In Washington, D.C., a few people drive cars that run on fuel cells. When these cars need more energy, drivers can go to a hydrogen pump. The first hydrogen pump for the public opened in November 2004, marking an important step toward a cleaner environment.

Because earthquakes happen without warning, it’s important to take steps now to prepare. Because you don’t know where you will be when an earthquake happens, prepare some supplies for your home, workplace, and car.
1.Water.
A person need at least 1/2 gallon of water daily just for drinking. Store at least 1 gallon of water per person per day and be prepared for a 72-hour period. It is suggested that you buy bottled water. Keep bottled water in its original container and do not open it until you need to use it. Also, do check the “use by” date.
2.Food.
It’s always a practical idea to keep a supply of nonperishable (不易腐烂的)food on hand. Have an enough supply of canned food, powdered milk, dried fruits, nonsalted nuts and canned juices for at least 72 hours.
3.Flashlights (手电筒) and spare batteries.
Keep a flashlight beside your bed, at your place of work, and in your car. Do not use matches or candles after an earthquake until you are sure that no gas leaks.
Prepare a battery-powered radio and spare batteries. Most telephones will be out of order, so radios will be your best source of information.
4.Clothes.
If you live in a cold place, you must think about warmth. You might not have heat after an earthquake. Think about your clothing and bedding supplies.

January 16, 2014 – We know the saying “The early bird gets the worm”, but today you’re going to  learn about the interesting saying “The early fish gets the bird.”
An African tigerfish(老虎鱼) was seen jumping out of the air and catching a flying bird. The African tigerfish has bright red fins and very sharp teeth. There have been rumors(传闻) this kind of fish preys on(捕食) birds since the 1940s, but no one was able to catch one.
"The whole action of jumping and catching happens so quickly that after we saw it, it took all of us a moment to really understand what we had just seen," said Nico Smit from Environmental Sciences and Management at North-West University.
Smit and his research team saw it at a lake in the Mapungubwe National Park in South Africa during summer. They found about 20 fish feeding on birds in the morning. Those birds may be out early to look for food, but we will never know for sure!

Have you ever wondered?
Why do airplanes take longer to fly west than east?
It can take five hours to go west-east from New York (NY) to London but seven hours to travel east-west from London to NY. The reason for the difference is an atmospheric phenomenon (大气现象) known as the jet stream (气流). The jet stream is a very high altitude (=" above" sea level) wind which always blows from the west to the east across the Atlantic. So the planes moving at a constant air speed go faster from the west to the east when they are moving with the wind than in the opposite.
What would happen if the gravity on Earth was suddenly turned off?
Supposing we could magically turn off gravity. Would buildings and other buildings float away? What happened would depend on (依靠) how strongly the things were attached (吸附) to the earth. The earth is moving at quite a speed, moving at over a thousand miles per hour. If you turn something around your head on a string, it goes around in a circle until you let go of the string. Then it flies off in a straight line. ‘Turning off’ gravity would be like letting go of the string. Things not attached to the earth would fly off in a straight line. People in buildings would suddenly shoot upwards at a great speed until they hit the ceiling (=" top" surface of a room). Most things outside would fly off into space.
小题1:What information can we get from the first passage?
A.It is the jet stream that affects how fast airplanes fly.
B.Planes go slower when they are moving with the wind.
C.It takes more time to fly from NY to London than from London to NY.
D.The jet stream always blows from the east to the west across the Atlantic.
小题2:The underlined word “shoot” in the 2nd paragraph means “_________”.
A.send for B.move quicklyC.come out D.grow quickly
小题3:It can be known that without gravity _________.
A.buildings and other structures would float away
B.trees and buildings would not so easily fly off
C.something around your head would not float away
D.everything outside buildings would fly off into space
小题4:Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage?
A.It takes seven hours to travel from London to New York.
B.The earth is moving at a high speed.
C.Things on the earth will float away if there’s no gravity.
D.Things not attached to the earth would fly off in a straight line.
小题5:Where can we read this passage?
