People in different countries have different ways of doing things. Something that is polite in one
country may be quite impolite in another. In Britain, you mustn"t lift your bowl to your mouth when
you are having some liquid (液体) food. But it"s different in China. And in Japan you even needn"t
worry about making noises when you have it. It shows that you are enjoying it. But it is regarded as
bad manners (礼貌,方式) in Britain. If you are a visitor in Mongolia, what manners do they wish you
to have? They wish you to give a loud "burp" (打嗝) after you finish eating. Burping shows that you like
the food.
In Britain, you should try not to put your hands on the table when your"re having a meal. In Mexico,
however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table during a meal. But in Arab countries you
must be very careful with your hands. You mustn"t eat with your left hand. Arabs consider it very bad
manners to eat with left hands. So, what should you do if you are on a visit in another country? Well,
just do in Rome as the Romans do. You can ask the native (本土的) people to help you or just watch
carefully and follow them.

During the Christmas season, people sing songs to celebrate the festival. These songs are called
"carols (颂歌)". Maybe you can name some famous carols like "Jingle Bells" and"Silent Night". They
bring a lot of joy to everyone at Christmas. A Christmas carol is about the themes (主题) of Christmas,
or the winter eason in general. People sing carols in the period before and during Christmas. The
tradition of Christmas rols dates back to the 13th century in Europe. Today carols are regularly sung
at religious (宗教的) services in churches (教堂). Traditional carols have a strong tune (音调) and have
a chorus (合唱) for group singing. The music sounds peaceful and calm, and they give people good
thoughts about holidays, good food and gifts. In places like England, groups of singers travel from door
to door in neighbourhoods, singing carols. They are often given small rewards like money, pies or a
glass of good drink. The money collected in this way is often given to help poor people. In Australia,
where Christmas is in the summer, people like to sing carols at candlelight (烛光) concerts. The concerts
are held outdoors at night in cities and towns during the weeks leading up to Christmas. People sing and
celebrate Christmas holding lit candles in their hands.

Rivers are one of our most important natural resources (自然资源). Many of the world"s great cities
are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through it that plays an
important role in the lives of its people.
Since the beginning of the history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the
United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is the Nile. To the people of India, the Gangs is great,
but it is also important for transportation; Ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers
are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in southeast Asia. The greatest of all for navigation (航海),
however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand
miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and
recreation for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of crops, engineers
sometimes build a dam (大坝) across a river and let a lake from behind the dam. Then people can use the
water not only to irrigate (灌溉) their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries.
However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow
in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other
materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want
to enjoy the benefits (利益) of this natural resource.
