The children at the top of the class succeed by knowing a few basic skills that others can easily learn,
according to the education experts and students themselves. Here are the secrets of top students.
Study is the first thing. Once the books are open or the computer is on, phone calls are unanswered,
TV shows unwatched, snacks unnoticed. Study is business; business comes before everything.
Study anywhere or everywhere. Study times are different for different children. Some work late at night
when the house is quiet. Others wake early. Still others study as soon as they come home from school.
However, all agree that consistency (持之以恒) is needed.
Get organized. Don"t waste time looking for a pencil or missing paper. Keep everything right where one
can put one"s hands on it. Even for a student who doesn"t keep his own study area organized, a bag or a
drawer is needed to put things in to save time.
Learn how to read. The secret of good reading is to be an active reader-one who continually asks
questions that lead to a full understanding of the writer"s message.
Use your time best. Even the best students put off their work sometimes. But when that happens, they
face it. "If you want to be at the top, make sure to finish the work on time." says Christi Anderson, a top
student at Lyman High School.
Take good notes and use them. Reading the text is important, but the teacher is going to test you on
what he or she emphasized (强调). That"s what you find in your notes.
Another kind of important "secret" of the top students is not so secret at all. For almost all of them,
their parents" help is important.
1. According to the third paragraph, as students, we should all ________.
A. study late into night
B. study in the early morning

D. study as soon as we get home
2. The fourth paragraph mainly tells us ________ to save time for study.
A. to look for our stationery
B. to organize ourselves into groups
C. to keep everything in hand
D. to get everything organized
3. How can we be an active reader?
A. Take good notes.
B. Ask questions continually.
C. Study everywhere.
D. Arrange our time well.
4. According to the writer, the real secret in becoming a top student lies in ________.
A. the good teachers.
B. the good education experts.
C. some basic learning skills.

Do you have a mobile phone? Do you send text messages to your friends and family?
Text messaging or "texting" is becoming very popular. But, scientists have discovered that texting can
give us problems with our hands. Be careful! Too Much texting can cause RSI (Repetitive Stain Injury) in
our thumbs and wrists. We spoke to a doctor called Harriet Wilson, who treats many patients with RSI.
She says if we spend more than 10-15 minutes texting each time, we could have problems in the future.
Dr. Harjeet Deepa, who treats RSI patients, said that the youngest patient she had treated was a
five-year-old girl. She had such bad RSI in her hands that she couldn"t hold a pencil.
As mobile phones develop, they are getting smaller with buttons closer together. Texting with a smaller
phone, is worse than using a larger phone with bigger buttons. Using computers and playing video games
can cause the same problem. So more and more people could find themselves with RSI.
Many university students and teenagers have RSI. If we don"t do anything about this, too many young
people could grow up in terrible pain.
(     )1. Too much texting can cause RSI.
(     )2. If we spend five minutes texting each time, we could have problems in the future.
(     )3. Dr. Harriet Wilson said the youngest patient she has treated was a five-year-old girl.
(     )4. Mobile phones are getting smaller and the buttons are getting closer together.
(     )5. Using computers and playing video games can"t cause RSI.
