任务型阅读。      Happiness is for everyone. You don"t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large
gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those
who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk to the country roads in
their free time.
In fact. Happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school,
your friends will help you: when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of
your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do
something wrong, people around you feel unhappy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them,
you can see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you
are very happy, because you have something else that can"t be bought with money. When you meet with
difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge (挑战)
yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a
revolving (旋转的) door. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.

Collecting tells stories. There is a story behind every object (物品) in a collection. There is your story:
the story of when and where you get each object and what it means to you. The objects themselves also
tell stories. If an object is old, it may tell the stories of other people who once owned (拥有) or used it.
If it"s new, it can tell you a lot about its own time and place.
Collecting teaches you many things. Historical (历史的) objects teach us about important events, great
heroes, or everyday life in the past. New objects show today"s technology (技术) and our way of life.
Plants, animals and stones teach us about nature.
Collecting lets you share your knowledge with others. When you show your collection to your family
or friends, you teach them new and interesting things. Kids all over the world are collectors, so while you"re
having fun learning about your collection, you can also make new friends and share your knowledge.

One of my favourite memories as a child is going by the river and sitting freely on the bank. There I would
enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush down and hear the sound of falling leaves.
When I think about the bamboo tree"s ability to return to its original position, the word "resilience" comes to
mind. When used to describe a person, this word means the ability to become well again from shock,
disappointment or any other situation that makes somebody unhappy.
Have you ever felt you are about to break with a sudden noise? Have you ever felt you are at your breaking
point? Thankfully, you are lucky to have the experience to live to talk about it.
Life is a mixture of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. Next time you are
experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments that take you close to your breaking point, don"t break.
Try your best not to let the situation get the best of (占上风) you.
Hopes will take you through the unpleasant experience. With hopes for a better tomorrow or a better
situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be. The unpleasant experience may be easier to deal with if
the end result is worth having.
If you are at your breaking point, you should be like the bamboo tree, bend, but don"t break!
1. The writer was moved by _______ one day when he went to sit by the river.
[     ]
A. the water
B. the bamboo tree
C. the leaves
2. What does the underlined word "resilience" mean? It means _______.
[     ]
A. 恢复力
B. 兴奋
C. 忧伤

[     ]
A. He used to go to the park to hear the sound of falling leaves.
B. He used to go to the lake and watch the water.
C. He used to go by the river and sit on the bank.
4. Next time you experience one of those bad things, try your best ______ get the best of you.
[     ]
A. to let the situation
B. not to let the situation

[     ]
A. We should bend when we hear a sudden noise.
B. We should go by the river and sit freely on the bank.
C. We should have the ability to become well again.

Like many people, I have no clear idea about heroes. At some point, we all wonder if we need a hero and
what a hero really is.
Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of
characteristics (特点) which give us courage and make us want to learn from them. A hero does something
worth talking about. A hero has a special story to tell and people think highly of it. But a hero is not just the
person with great fame (声誉).
A hero has powers (力量) larger than himself. Some people want to live like a hero, and they have to
experience life with new and further meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom they serve.
What do they want to live and die for? If the answer suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be
famous persons but not heroes.
A hero has a vision from the mountaintop. He has the power to move people. He creates new possibilities.
Without Gandhi, India might still be part of Britain. Without Martin Luther King, Jr., Americans might take
different buses, eat in different restaurants, go for walks in different parks, and shop in different stores
because of the different colours of their skin.
There might be changes in society without a hero, but the speed of change would be rather slow. Thanks
to heroes in history, they make the society develop so rapidly.
