I graduated from high school, early and had children. about my English, I often helped my kids with their English homework. And I wrote long articles and beautiful poetry as a columnist for a newspaper. Fifteen years later, I went to college, and because I had been an "A" student, I remained an "A" student. I up to my own expectations. Yesterday, I my high school report cards when I was reading old papers. That bundle of report cards back the old days. I remembered sitting in my advisor"s office, explaining that I had always be at English, and recommending that I did not deserve a ""D" from that inexperienced teacher of my senior year. The advisor was but unable to change a (an) . Reading through my old report cards revealed something else too. I wanted to them or hide them. I was not an "A" student in high school English! Somehow, I had myself of this, when the grades clearly reflected an average student with an "A" or "B" but mostly "C” S. Had I lived up to those grades and myself according to those letters, I would have never confidently sought my writing career. Had I my early grades instead of myself, I would have allowed my fear of failure to enthusiasm and damage my creativity. Instead, I my younger self as an "A" English student, except for that undeserved "D".

Henry Ford grew up on an un-electrified farm, and as a young man he followed Edison"s career as the inventor became a national role model.Ford took a job at the Edison Illuminating Company working his way up to chief engineer. In 1896 Ford was thirty-three and, though still working for Edison Co.,he had created his first experimental automobile the Ford Quadricycle2 during his off-time. At an Edison company party in New York, Ford had his first chance to meet his hero Edison and was able to explain his new automobile to the great inventor. Edison was impressed. Edison is said to have slammed his fist downand shouted ¨Young man, that"s the thing! You have it! Your car is self-contained and carries its own power plant." Edison himself had been working on the idea, but had only been considering electricity as the power source, so the idea of a gas engine was a somewhat new one. The words comforted Ford greatly, who immediately set out building a second car which was to become the Model-T.6.The two men became f"ast friends and would go on camping trips together. When Edison later became limited to a wheelchair, Ford brought an extra one to his house so they could race.At the 50th anniversary of the invention of light-bulb, Ford honored Edison. When Edison spoke, he ended his speech directed at Ford:“ As to Henry Ford, words fail to express my feelings.I can only say that he is my friend." Therefore it is no surprise that Ford wanted something to remember Edison by after he passed away in 1931. Once, Ford asked Thomas Edison"s son Charles to sit by the dying inventor"s bedside and hold a test tube next to his father"s mouth to catch his final breath. Ford was a man with many strange behaviors( as was Edison)including some interest in reanimation and spiritualism(夏活通灵术)and some say that he was attempting to catch Edison"s soul as it escaped his body in hopes of later bringing the inventor back to life. The test tube itself didn"t turn up until 1950 when it was listed in the Ford possessions after Clara Ford"s passing away, and then lost again until 1978 when it was discovered in an exhibit Entitled “Henry Ford-A Personal History" in the Henry Ford Museum. It would then be discovered that the tube was labeled “Edison"s Last Breath". There is a further mystery of this “last breath" test tube. It would seem as if Edison had quite a last breath indeed, as the Edison Estate holds a collection of 42 test tubes all supposedly containing Edison"s last breath. Regardless of the excitement over the last breath, the test tube is quite touching in its meaning.Although both men were known for all sorts of poor behavior towards .their loved ones and mistreatment of employees, between them at least, there was clearly a deep respect and admiration. 小题1:The passage can be sorted as a .A.science research | B.short story | C.news report | D.self-introduction | 小题2:From the underlined sentence in Paragraph2 we can learn that .A.Edison envied what Ford had achieved | B.Edison was annoyed that Ford did better him | C.Edison was angry because Ford stole his idea | D.Edison was extremely amazed at Ford"s new idea | 小题3:In Paragraph 3,the writer mentions Ford bought an extra wheelchair .A.to remind Edison was Ford"s role model | B.to suggest Ford was a man of strange behavior | C.to tell us the importance of a creative idea then | D.to show the close friendship between Henry Ford and Edison | 小题4:¨The 61ast breath" test tube" can probably be regarded as .A.a symbol of a friendship and memory | B.a witness to a scientific breakthrough | C.a failure to bring Edison back to life | D.a sign of the two inventors" poor behavior | 小题5:It can be learned from the last paragraph that“ ” .A.Great minds think alike | B.Nobody is perfect | C.Two heads are better than one | D.A friend in need is a friend indeed |

Sherlock Holmes was the greatest detective in history. His astonishing power of observation and analysis meant that he was able to solve cases which left the real police completely perplexed. As a problem solver in the law forced business, he was a knowledgeable person equal to Superman, the comic book hero. Like Superman, of course, Holmes did not exist. He was the creation of a Scottish doctor and novelist Arthur Conan Doyle, and remains one of the most famous literary fiction characters of all time. Holmes’ general rule when trying to solve a case was as follows: completely get rid of the impossible. Then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. It’s said that Holmes’ powers of deduction (推断) were superhuman, particularly his ability to process information from what he observed. In a story called The Boscombe Valley Mystery, Holmes examines the area near a lake where a murder has been committed. The local police have already searched the area and found no clues. Holmes spends ten minutes in the area, and announces that the murderer “is a tall man, left-handed, limps with the right leg, wears thick-soled shooting boots and a gray coat, smokes Indian cigars, uses a cigar holder, and carries a penknife in his pocket. There are several other indications, but these may be enough to aid us in our search.” Needless to say, he has found evidence to support all of these statements. The fictional Holmes lived in an apartment at 221 Baker Street, a real street in Central London. When Conan Doyle wrote about Holmes, there was no 221 Baker Street, but after the street was extended northwards, there was. There is currently a bank at that address. The fact that Holmes didn’t actually exist doesn’t stop thousands of people writing to him for help every year. The bank kindly responds to every letter they receive with the following message: “Mr. Holmes thanks you for your letter. At the moment he is retired in Sussex, keeping bees, and does not undertake detective work nowadays.” 小题1:In the first paragraph the underlined word “perplexed” suggests that the police were _______A.confident | B.worried | C.confused | D.sure | 小题2:How does the writer describe Holmes and Superman?A.Neither Superman nor Holmes was a real character. | B.Both Superman and Holmes used super intellect to solve problems. | C.Superman was a comic book figure, while Holmes was a real detective. | D.Superman and Holmes were equally intelligent and brave. | 小题3:How did Holmes use his powers of deduction in the fourth paragraph?A.He spent a long time thinking about possible solutions. | B.He found clues to help him create a full description of a suspect. | C.He observed the crime area and guessed what happened. | D.He searched the area with the police and discussed with them, | 小题4:When letters are written to Holmes, _______A.he answers letters when he receives them | B.his secretary answers them for him. | C.the bank at 221 Baker Street where he used to live sends the letters back | D.the bank at his address replies that Holmes is no longer working as a detective |
