It was 20 years ago. I was driving home with my 4-year-old son. Traffic was light. I was singing quietly along 36 the song playing on the radio. I 37 at the intersection and looked both ways. The road was 38 . I slowly started to make a right turn when suddenly a car rounded the curve at high speed and came 39 at me. I stomped (猛踩) on the brakes of my car killing the engine in the process. The speeder zoomed (疾驰) past my dead car 40 me by inches without even slowing down. 41 I knew it, a stream of rude words was flying from my lips, 42 after the car and its driver. I then saw my son who was staring up at me 43 . With a red face and a(an) 44 smile I started the car, pulled back onto the road, and headed home. Later that evening I was reading a book when I heard certain 45 words coming from my son’s bedroom. He was replaying the 46 over and over in his mind. Too 47 I realized the 48 of those words that had flown from my lips in that moment of 49 . It took a lot of talks about good language and bad language with my son to undo (消除)the 50 of that incident. That 51 , however, did teach me just how strong words 52 be. It helped me to decide to stop swearing (咒骂) in my own life and to start using words that uplift and inspire instead. I slowly realized that language is a 53 from God and should be used to make our world better but not worse. I learned 54 that a few loving words can help a hurting heart, strengthen a 55 spirit, and lighten a heavy load. I pray then that all of your words today are full of love, joy, happiness, and light.

For most people, graduation is an exciting day, but my graduation day was not. I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had flown in from across the country to 36 the celebration. But just like everyone else in my class, I had watched the 37 turn from bad to worse in my senior year. Almost all of us graduates had degrees, but very uncertain 38 . The weeks ahead weren’t 39 . I knew my small university town couldn’t offer me any opportunities, 40 I packed up my car and drove to Southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a 41 dragged into two, and then four, and 100 job applications later, I found myself in the exact same 42 as I was before. You know that feeling when you wake up in 43 ? That feeling became a constant in my life. Days felt like weeks, weeks like months, and those many months felt like everlasting 44 . And the most annoying part was no matter how much I tried, I just couldn’t seem to make any 45 . So what did I do to keep my good sense? I decided to 46 . Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer — a little brighter. Something about writing gave me 47 . And if you want something 48 enough, sometimes a little hope is all you 49 ! I put my thoughts into a children’s book. Beyond the River was the story of an unlikely hero, a little fish, who 50 to give up his dream. And then one day, without any sort of writing degree or contacts in the writing world — just a lot of hard work and determination —I was offered a 51 contract for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into 52 . I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with the Walt Disney Company and was 53 shortly after. Don’t give up. Even if things look 54 now, don’t give up. If you work hard, things will always get better. Often times our dreams lie in wait just a little further upstream ... all we need is the 55 to push beyond the river.

Renata Di Pietro was studying to be an opera singer. But at 23, while on a music scholarship at the University of Iowa in 1976, her sight began to fail. Soon, it became increasingly difficult to read scores and pick up hand signals from conductors, and the gifted singer was forced to drop out. After moving to Cleveland, Georgia in 2005, Di Pietro relied on guide dogs to get around. Over the years, she became depressed when she’d lose one of the dogs, who had become her best friend, to old age or death. “It’s very painful, because you love each one,” she says. In 2009, Di Pietro was intrigued by information from a friend that miniature horses typically live for at least 30 years and make calm and strong guides. She started with a male horse, but he was too hard to control. Angel came next, a mini white female horse Di Pietro has mostly trained herself. “Horses have the ability to avoid the things in the way,” she says. “If I am about to run into something, she slides her body in front of me.” Di Pietro, now 59, has taught her guide horse to make some sounds with her hoof (马蹄)when she comes to stairs. “Angel can find a chair and locate the nearest door for me,” Di Pietro says. Currently, she’s training Angel to pull her wheelchair and to fetch. Despite her disability, Di Pietro still sings, performing with her husband, musician Carl Hummer, at special events. Angel is always by her side. “I fight a battle every day to take courage to engage the world,” Di Pietro says. “Angel is my warhorse. We fight that battle together.” 小题1:Why did Di Pietro have to give up her studying in the university?A.She disliked her major in music. | B.She failed to get high scores. | C.She couldn’t understand hand signals from conductors. | D.She found it difficult to see things clearly. | 小题2:What does the underlined word “intrigued” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A.Puzzled. | B.Interested. | C.Satisfied. | D.Frightened. | 小题3:Angel can do a lot of things for Di Pietro now EXCEPT_________.A.supporting her in case of her falling | B.helping her find a chair to sit on | C.keeping her company every day | D.fighting with her against others | 小题4:Which of the following can best describe the author?A.Caring and strong-minded. | B.Honest and responsible. | C.Kind and helpful. | D.Ambitious and sensitive. |
