for fear of being caught.选C。 小题1:根据下文提到的the meeting room 说明老鼠是想hold a meeting.选D。 小题1:考查介词词组搭配in return回报 in danger 有危险 in fact事实上in need需要,只有in danger符合句意:老鼠决定举行会议防止他们有危险。 小题1:从下文的another said, “What about poisoning(毒死) her?” 填refuse.D 小题1:But 42 knew where to buy the poison. 选 A。 小题1:从这段的最后一句话they congratulated him on his good idea. We’ll tie this bell to the cat’s tail, 看出这只老鼠是想要大家保持安静。B 小题1:根据句意,如果给猫挂了铃铛,就可以知道它在哪里了。选A恰当。 小题1:根据句意,听到铃响的话,就有时间逃跑了。C 小题1:根据上文的escape,可知是让行动缓慢的老鼠躲起来。选D。 小题1:根据上文Hearing the words, everyone got 50 大家听到这样的好主意,大家一定兴奋。 小题1:由上文的tightly,可知是铃不会掉下来。drop off. turn up露面get up起床put off推迟。 小题1:上面讨论的是给老鼠挂了铃铛,那老鼠就不会安静的走路了。选C。 小题1:这句话是,我们要决定谁来把铃铛系到猫的脖子上。D 小题1:要实施这个决定是要够勇敢的。选B 小题1:从最后一句话:but putting them into practice is a more difficult matter. 看出说起来容易,但实施很难,选A正确。 |

My friend Robert started a new job this week and he’s been in the training class for two days. The employer has a very strict dress code—dark blue shirts and pants. On the first day, an older gentleman in his class did not have the proper clothes and he was strictly told that he would be fired if he didn’t have the right clothes the next day. He explained, “Sir, I had been told about this, but because of my larger size, it’s sometimes difficult to find the right clothing for a price I can afford.” Last night, Robert and I decided that this old man shouldn’t lose the chance of work simply because he couldn’t afford the clothes. I had some cash on hand and Robert took it with him this morning just in case it was needed. When training started this morning, the trainer was ready to fire the older gentleman. “You have 10 minutes to be in proper clothes,” he was told. At this point, Robert spoke up and asked if he could have 10 minutes to get him the clothes. He then ran out to the store and bought the proper-sized pants and a shirt; he returned with both and gave them to the older man. The older gentleman began to cry and told him that he couldn’t accept such a gift from a stranger. Robert told him he had to because he had lost the receipt(收据) and couldn’t return them—a little white lie. The pants were a perfect fit, the shirt was a bit tight but he was able to keep his job. “My wife and I tried to gather together some money last night, but we didn’t have enough to buy the clothes,” he told Robert. “It’s unbelievable to me that a person would do such a thing for only knowing me a day!” More unbelievable is how good it has made Robert and me feel to do this. 小题1:If the older man did not have the proper clothes, he would _____.A.be punished | B.be offered another job | C.put off the training class | D.lose his job | 小题2:The money which was paid for the clothes was _____.A.the trainer’s | B.the older man’s | C.the writer’s | D.Robert’s | 小题3: How did Robert persuade the older man to accept the clothes?A.He told the older man that he would lose his job if he did not take them. | B.He told a lie that the clothes didn’t fit himself. | C.He told the older man that he could save money and return it later. | D.He told the older man that he had no way to send them back. 4:What might be the best title for the passage?A.Proper clothes for a stranger | B.Fight against strict rules | C.A strange employer | D.An unbelievable thing |

Joanne was stuck in a traffic jam in central Birmingham at 5: 30 and at 6: 30 she was expected to be chairing a meeting of the tennis club. At last, the traffic was moving. She swung quickly racing to her house. As she opened the door, she nearly tripped(绊) over Sheba. “Hey, Sheba,” she said, “I’ve got no time for you now, but I’ll take you out as soon as I get back from tennis club.” Then she noticed Sheba seemed to be coughing or choking. Obviously, she could hardly breathe. Immediately, Joanne realized she would have to take her to the vet(兽医). When she got there, the vet was just about to close for the day. Seeing the state of Sheba, Dr. Sterne brought her quickly into his office. “Listen, doctor, I’m really in a rush to get to a meeting. Can I leave her with you, and go and get changed? I’ll be back in ten minutes to pick her up, and then I’ll take her on to the meeting with me. Is that OK?” “Sure.” said the doctor. Joanne made the quick trip back to her house in a couple of minutes. As she was once more entering the hallway, the phone by the door began to ring. “This is Dr. Sterne,” said an anxious voice. “I want you to get out of that house immediately,” said the doctor’s voice. “I’m coming round right away, and the police will be there any time now. Wait outside!” At that moment, a police car screeched to a stop outside the house. Two policemen got out and ran into the house. Joanne was by now completely confused and very frightened. Then the doctor arrived. “Where’s Sheba? Is she OK?” shouted Joanne. “She’s fine, Joanne. I took out the thing which was choking her, and she’s OK now.” Just then, the two policemen reappeared from the house, half-carrying a white-faced man, who could hardly walk. There was blood all over him. “My God,” said Joanne, “how did he get in there? And how did you know he was there?” “I think he must be a burglar.” said the doctor. “I knew he was there because when I finally removed what was stuck in Sheba’s throat: it turned out to be three human fingers.” 小题1:Joanne wanted to get back to her home again _____.A.to dress up for the meeting | B.to phone the police station | C.to catch the badly hurt burglar | D.to wait for her dog to be cured | 小题2:From the passage, we can infer that _____.A.Sheba fought against the burglar | B.the police found the burglar had broken in | C.Joanne had planned to take her dog to the meeting | D.the doctor performed a difficult operation on the dog | 小题3:In this passage, the writer intends to tell us that the dog is _____.A.clever | B.friendly | C.frightening | D.devoted |

Linus Pauling, the only person who has won two undivided Nobel Prizes, was born in Portland,Oregon. He attended Washington High School but because of an unimportant detail he did not receive his diploma until 1962,long after he had received his Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Orgon State College in 1922. He had chosen to study his major because he could get a good job with it. He won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1954 for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and its application to the explanation of the structure of complex substance. His interest in the “behavior” of molecules(分子) led him from physical chemistry to biological chemistry, especially of the human body. He began with proteins and their main parts, the amino acids(氨基酸),which are called the“building blocks of life”.In 1950,he constructed the first satisfactory model of a protein molecule,a discovery very important to the understanding of the living cell. During World WarⅡ,Pauling was a member of the Research Board for National Security, for which he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Merit in 1948. However, the use of the atomic bomb near the end of the war turned Pauling in a new direction. Having long worked on the structure of molecules,he took an immediate interest in the deadly effects of nuclear fallout on human molecular structures. From then on,Pauling protested the production of the hydrogen bomb and supported the prevention of the spread of nuclear weapons. Through his efforts,The NuclearTestBan Treaty, declaring all nuclear tests to be illegal except underground ones, came into effect on October 10,1963,the same day Linus Pauling was awarded the Nobel Peace. 小题1:From the first Paragraph,we learn that Linus Pauling________.A.didn’t study hard while in Washington High School | B.is the only scientist who has won two Nobel Prizes | C.was once badly treated in Washington High School | D.chose to study chemical engineering to earn his living | 小题2:Which of the following things did Pauling pay much attention to at first?A.The “behavior” of molecules. | B.Physical chemistry. | C.Biological chemistry. | D.The human body. 3:Which of the following is legal according to The NuclearTestBan Treaty?A.The use of nuclear weapons. | B.Testing hydrogen bomb on the ground. | C.Testing hydrogen bomb on underground. | D.The production of hydrogen bombs. 4:The main idea of the passage is to show________.A.Linus Pauling’s attitude towards nuclear weapons | B.Linus Pauling’s contributions to the world | C.Linus Pauling’s research on the structure of molecules | D.Linus Pauling’s got the Nobel Prize for Peace |

Nobel, who was born in Stockholm, is a great scientist famous for his dangerous experiments. Nobel studied in the USA and then Russia between 1850 and 1859. After his return, he started researching into bombs. As is known, bomb is dangerous to life, but Nobel was working under that condition. Once a big explosion in his lab completely destroyed the lab and caused some deaths. After that he had to experiment on a boat in a lake. He received criticism and satire(讽刺), but he proceeded with the work rather than losing heart. From 1860s to 1880s, Nobel made many achievements and his inventions were first used in building roads and digging tunnels. Most of the bombs were safer and more possible to be controlled. Even at the end of the 20th century, we still used his methods. Nobel had many patents in Britain and other European countries. He was quick to see industrial openings(机会) for his scientific inventions and built up over 80 companies in 20 different countries. Indeed his greatness lay in his outstanding ability to combine the qualities of an original scientist with those of a forwardlooking industrialist. But Nobel’s main concern was never with making money or even with making scientific discoveries. Seldom happy, he was always searching for a meaning to life, and from his youth, he had taken a serious interest in literature and philosophy. His greatest wish, however, was to see an end to wars, and thus peace between nations, and he spent much time and money working for this cause. To follow his will, a fund was set up to encourage people to make great progress in physics, chemistry, physiology(生理学), medicine, literature and peace. That’s the Nobel Prize which means great honor to a scientist. 小题1:Through his early experimental work, it is evident that ________.A.Nobel was a man of strong will | B.Nobel was a man of gift | C.Nobel seldom got on well with his work | D.Nobel had his heart in his work | 小题2:In fact, his inventions were first used in ________.A.a war to kill and injure his fellow men | B.building roads | C.digging tunnels | D.both B and C | 小题3:Based on the passage, Nobel, as a scientist, ________.A.took a single interest in science | B.took a serious interest in money | C.took no interest in literature | D.took a serious interest in literature as well as in science | 小题4:Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A.His wonderful will surely provided other scientists with a large sum of money. | B.In leaving behind a wellmeant will, Nobel succeeded in setting up a permanent monument for his interests and ideals. | C.Nobel made a glorious will so that he might be remembered and respected after his death. | D.Nobel expressed his wish in his will that a monument should be put up in memory of him. |
