Some people succeed, while others may not. This is because some people possess certain qualities, which others do not. The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, you must be optimistic. If you do not expect to win, you will not try as hard as those who do expect to win. You also need to have a clear aim and a reason for doing something because motivation is a key to achieving success. If you do not have an aim, you will not be motivated to work hard put your performance under the microscope to make sure that every detail is right. Another quality that helps people succeed is creativity-----thinking about things in a different way and wondering how others would do the same thing. Think about some successful people you know. They might be successful with a little creativity, but the most successful people are the most creative ones. Reading is another to success, as it will help you learn about how other people have achieved success. If you want to learn how to set up a successful business, you should read books about famous people like Bill Gates and Jerry Yang, who have achieved amazing success in their areas of business. Practicing is equally important if you want to succeed because practice makes perfect. Practice every day at whatever career you are in, and by doing so, you will see yourself, your business and your self-confidence begin to grow. If you feel confident about what you do, this confidence will make other people believe in you as well. Your colleagues will be happy to work with you, and your boss will give you more responsibility. Finally if you are a successful person, you will be able to look people in the eye and smile confidently. Success is yours for the taking! Cheers!

D Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. He studied the observations of comets(彗星)which other scientists had made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems. However, Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton, who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse(椭圆形). Now Halley set to work. He figured out(解决,计算出)the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607, and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearance had been 75 to 76 years apart. This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about it, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again. It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain to make a prediction(预言)of what would happen in the future. He decided that this would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halley’s prediction could be tested. In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he had died some years before. Ever since then that comet had been called Halley’s comet, in his honor. 63. Edmund Halley figured out the orbit of ____. A. some different comets appearing several times B. the same comet appearing at different times C. three different comets appearing at the same time D. several comets appearing at the same time 64. Halley made his discovery ____. A. by doing experiments B. by means of his own careful observation C. by using the working of other scientists D. by chance 65. 第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A Recently I gave my adult students homework. It was “go to someone you love and tell them you love them.” It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or at least haven’t shared those words with for a long time. It sounds like very tough homework since most of the men were over 35 and were raised in the generation of men that were taught expressing emotions is not “macho(阳刚之气).” Showing feelings or crying was just not done. So this was very threatening homework for some. At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them. I fully expected one of the women to volunteer, as was usually the case, but on this evening one of the men raised his hand, quite moved and a bit shaken. As he unfolded out of his chair (all 1.85 meters of him), he began by saying, “Dennis, I was quite angry with you last week when you gave us this homework . Why were you to tell me to do something that personal?” “But as I began driving home my conscience(良心)started telling me that I knew exactly who I needed to say ‘I love you’ to.” “Five years ago, my father and I had a severe disagreement and really never settled it since then. We avoided seeing each other unless we absolutely had to at Christmas or other family gatherings. But even then, we hardly spoke to each other.” “So last Tuesday by the time I got home I had convinced myself I was going to tell my father I loved him. It’s strange, but just making that decision seemed to lift a heavy load off my chest.” 56.The homework is threatening for some students because . A. they are middle-aged people B. they are not macho enough C. they were taught to hide their emotions D. they didn’t know how to show feelings 57.From the passage we know that________. A. the adult students have classes in the day time only B. not all the adult students in the writer’s class are male C. the man refused to meet his father after their quarrel D. the man quickly decided to say “I love you” to his father 58.The underlined phrase “unfolded out of his chair” in Para 4 is closest in meaning to_______. A. stood on his chair straight B. sat quietly in the chair C. bent himself over his chair D. raised himself slowly from the chair 59.What does the man imply by saying the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? A. He felt it too strange to say “I love you” to his father. B. He felt relaxed just thinking of saying “I love you” to his father. C. He felt very relaxed after saying “I love you” to his father. D. He had to lift a heavy load off his chest before saying “I love you”. 60. .Which do you think can be the best title of the passage? A. Special homework for adults. B. Saying “I love you” is not mancho. C. Disagreement between father and son . D. It is easy for adults to express their love. |
E To: manger @ tastytreat.com Date: Monday, 7 October, 3:34 p.m. From: raymondyuen@ canada.net Subject: Complaint Dear Mr. Price, I have eaten in your restaurant many times and have always been happy with the food and service. This makes what happened last Saturday even more disappointing. It was my son’s birthday so we booked a non-smoking table at your restaurant for 7:30 p.m. We arrived on time but were told that our table was not yet ready. At 8:00 p.m., we were given a table in the smoking section. I asked to move but I was told that there were no other tables. A lot of people were smoking so it was uncomfortable and unhealthy. Our first waitress, Janet, was very polite and helpful. She gave us free drinks for waiting so long. Our food also came quickly and looked fresh and tasty. When my wife had eaten most of her meal, she found a dead cockroach (蟑螂) in her vegetables. She was shocked and wanted to leave. At first, the waitress told us it was a piece of garlic. When we told her that garlic does not have legs, she apologized and took the food away. We asked for the bill, expecting not to pay for my wife’s meal. Nobody came. After 15 minutes, I asked to see the manager. The head waiter told us that you were on holiday I complained again about the horrible cockroach. He told me Janet had finished work. He didn’t believe my story and gave me a bill for three meals. I argued with him but was forced to pay. The waitress, Janet, was always friendly, but I would like an apology from your impolite head waiter and a full repayment for our meal. It cost $68. Until then, I will not be eating at your restaurant or recommending it to anyone. You can contact me at 742-3254 or through e-mail if you want more information. Thank you for your attention.
