I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of.In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives (观点)by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in. With this unshakable belief, I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful.Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it.He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with, or agrees with so strongly that it reshapes his own world. He cannot write without loving to read, because only through reading other people"s writing can one discover what works, what doesn"t and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has. Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read fiction(文学作品). As a law student, my reading is in fact limited to subject matter-the volume(量)of what I have to read for classes every week means there is little time to read anything else.Such reading made it all the clearer to me that I live in a very small part in this great place called life.Reading fiction reminds me that there is life beyond my own.It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn"t necessariy be able to have in my lifetime.

We were in Boston, a place not always known for small conversation between strangers. The woman stopped unloading her basket and looked up at me.She smiled. It was a nice smile-warm and reassuring-and I returned her_gift by smiling back. "Must be a special lady, whoever it is that will be getting those beautiful flowers, "she said. "Yes, she"s special, "I said, and then to my embarrassment, the words kept coming out."It"s only our second date, but somehow I am just having the feeling she"s"the one.""jokingly, I added, "The only problem is that I can"t figure out why she"d want to date a guy like me." "Well, I think she"s very lucky to have a boyfriend who brings her such lovely flowers and who is obviously in love with her."the woman said."My husband used to bring me flowers every week-even when times were tough and we didn"t have much money. Those were incredible days;he was very romantic and-of course-I miss him since he"s passed away." It took her a moment to realize that I was giving her the flowers I had just purchased."You have a wonderful evening."I said.I left her with a big smile and my heart warmed as I saw her smelling the beautiful flowers. When I was in the third grade, I was picked to be the princess(公主)in the school play. For weeks my mother had helped me practice my lines. But once onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Then my teacher told me she had written a narrator"s(解说者的)part for the play, and asked me to change roles. Though I didn"t tell my mother what had happened that day, she sensed my unhappiness and asked if I wanted to take a walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day. We could see dandelions(蒲公英)popping through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with bits of gold. I watched my mother carelessly bend down by one of the bunches. "I think I am going to dig up all these weeds," she said. "From now on, we"ll have only roses in this garden." "But I like dandelions," I protested. "All flowers are beautiful---even dandelions!" My mother looked at me seriously. "Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn"t it?" she asked thoughtfully. I nodded. "And that is true of people, too," she added. When I realized that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry and told her the truth. "But you will be a beautiful narrator,"she said, reminding me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. Over the next few weeks, with her continuous encouragement, I learned to take pride in the role. The big day finally came. A few minutes before the play, my teacher came over to me. "Your mother asked me to give this to you," she said, handing me a dandelion. After the play, I took home the flower, laughing that I was perhaps the only person who would keep such a weed. 1.
