On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Everything about the school seemed so difficult. When I got home, my parents said, "You"re nervous and that"s okay. Everyone is afraid of high school." I denied it. I wanted to be strong, so I refused to let anyone know about my fear, even my closest friends. On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that I couldn"t figure out. Was this how the whole year was going to be? I didn"t think I could rise to this challenge, especially carrying a huge backpack that I could hardly lift. It was so big that I could knock someone out with it! The schoolmates seemed to regard me as a fool, and they were probably right. Despite my fears, after the first week I finally had my schedule figured out. With the exception of falling up and down the stairs a couple of times and getting laughed at, high school was turning out to be not so bad. It was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging. Since then, I"ve been elected vice monitor of my class, which wasn"t much of a victory since only three people ran for the four positions. It is normal to be scared about a new school. Take a deep breath and relax. High school is something that any student can overcome. Make sure you participate in some outofclass activities because you"ll find it easier to make friends. Try to do your best, even if it isn"t straight A"s. Most important of all, be who you are, whether you"re a "fool", an athlete, or a lower grader. Don"t try to pretend to be someone you"re not. Now you know the true secrets of high school. 1. The main reason for the author"s fear on his first day is that ________. A. he was unable to work out the puzzle B. his schoolmates were unfriendly to him C. he was not familiar with the new surroundings D. his schoolbag was too heavy for him to carry 2. From the author"s first day experience we can infer that ________. A. his home was far from the school B. he got to school after classes began C. he didn"t get any school schedule D. he didn"t know the right way to class 3. After his first week at school, the author ________. A. was still not accustomed to the schedule B. gradually adjusted himself to the new school C. found high school not so challenging as he had imagined D. ran for monitor of his class against three other students 4. According to the passage, the secret of the author"s success lies mainly in ________. A. making more friends B. getting more A"s at school C. being who he really is D. joining in outofclass activities

A father"s job is unique. If parents had job descriptions, mine would read: organize bills, play dates, laundry, meals, carpool, snacks and outings. The only thing on my husband"s description would be the word "fun" written in big red letters along the top. Our parenting styles complement each other. His style is a nonstop adventure where no one has to worry about washing their hands, or eating vegetables. I"m too busy worrying to be fun. Besides, every time I try, I am constantly outdone by my husband. I bought my children bubble gumflavored toothpaste, and I taught them how to brush their teeth. They thought it was neat until my husband taught them how to rinse(濑口)by spitting out water between their two front teeth like a fountain. I tried singing fun songs as I washed behind my children"s ears during bath time. They enthusiastically sang and clapped until their father came in and taught them how to catapult (弹射) the soap into the sink with the washcloth. I took the children for a nature walk to corral (把……赶入……) a slow ladybug(瓢虫)into my son"s insect cage. I was "cool" until their father came home, spent two minutes in the backyard, and captured a beetle the size of a Chihuahua (吉娃娃,一种产于墨西哥的狗).. I try to tell myself I am a good parent even if my husband does things I can"t do. I can make sure my children are safe. But I can"t wire the VCR so my children can"t watch their favourite video. I can carry my children in my arms when they are tired and kiss them good night. But I can"t flip them upside down so they can walk on the ceiling or prop them on my shoulders so they can see the moths flying inside the light fixture. I can take them to doctor appointments, but I"ll never go into the wilderness to fish. I"ll even sit in the first row of every Little League game, but I"ll never teach my children how to hit a home run or slide into first base. I can do a lot of things for my children, but no matter how hard I try, I can never be their father. 1. What"s the job of the mother in the passage? A. Looking after children, going shopping and doinghousework. B. Going shopping and sending her children to school. C. Playing with her children and going to school with them. D. Working in the office and taking care of her children and husband. 2. The father will do the following EXCEPT ________ according to the passage. A. going wild to fish with the children B. making appointments with doctors C. flipping the children upside down D. teaching the children how to hit a home run 3. What"s the best title for the passage? A. Mothers Have a Unique Job B. Children Are Very Important C. Fathers Have a Unique Job D. Parents Have Gentle Children

As my bride of many years greeted me one evening, her voice was heard through the door, "Guess what?" I always take a deep breath on this very leading question. "What?" I asked. "I just won a sales contest at work and the prize is dinner for two at the new fancy restaurant down by the river front!" Her excitement was inspiring. We knew the restaurant was superior because we could only understand parts of the menu. "See? I told you there would be a place for me to wear my new spring outfit," she shyly reminded me. "Two can play at that game," I responded. "I will wear my gray suit, my Borsalino imported straw hat and a new silk tie. We will be dressed very well. This town will never be the same. Almost like our first date." It was early spring and nearing dusk as the head waiter showed us to a table by a window, with a view of the river. The table was beautifully set, with a smoke-gray tablecloth decorated by bright red napkins, lemon slices in the long-stemmed water glasses, fresh flowers. A delicious meal served in such an atmosphere should be remembered a long time. As it turned out, this would probably never be forgotten. As the shadows lengthened, the riverboats rocking in the river, I murmured, "Why don"t we walk down the path like we did in Paris a few years ago? Remember the fun we had?" Hand in hand, we walked by the stores. People smiled and nodded. Lots of smiling and nodding, in fact. "I never realized there were so many friendly people as we have seen this evening, dear," I observed. "Probably your new straw hat. Or the fact that you"re such a handsome guy," she answered. We completed the walking tour past the store windows. After acknowledging many smiles, we found ourselves back at the restaurant, looking at our reflection in the window. It was then that I saw the reason for all the smiles. Caught in the fly(纽扣盖) of my trousers and hanging down for all to see was a bright red napkin from the restaurant!
