Millions of girls grow up with the hope of becoming a famous singer. Some even win local talent competitions as children, but only a few such early successes and dreams turn into reality. Jessica Andrews is one of the few whose dreams have come true. Andrews" first taste of success came at the age of 10. She won a talent competition in her home town of Huntingdon, Tennessee, singing I Will Always Love You, originally sung by Whitney Houston. Houston"s version of the song appeared on The Bodyguard sound track, which happened to be the first album Andrews ever bought. Within two years, talk of Andrews had spread to Nashville and caught the attention of producer Byron Gallimore, whose credits include work with Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Jo Dee Messina. With Gallimore signed on to produce, Andrews soon had a recording contract (合同) with Dream Works" Nashville label. Andrews" professional career was launched with 1999"s Heart Shaped World, recorded when she was 14 years old. The album included the country hit I Will Be There For You, which also appeared on The Prince Of Egypt. She followed up the release of the album by touring as a support act for such country superstars as Faith Hill and Trisha Yearwood. With the release of 2001"s Who I Am, Andrews became a star in her own right. The album was certified (证明) gold for sales of 500,000 copies. Andrews returned in April 2003 with Now, an album that she promised would show a new side of the young artist. "This album has a very different feeling for me," she said. "It"s a lot more personal and there"s a confidence that wasn"t quite there on the first two. I feel especially connected to this group of songs."

We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. Our car looked like a flower shop inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and then my wife noticed the cupboard. It was tall and narrow, and it stood outside a furniture shop. "Buy it," she said at once. "We"ll carry it home on the roofrack (行李架). I"ve always wanted one like that." What could I do? Ten minutes later I was £20 poorer, and the cupboard was tied on to the roofrack. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea. After a time my wife said, "There is a long line of cars behind. Why don"t they overtake, I wonder?" In fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then with great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me. I was puzzled. "Thanks, officer," I said. "You"ve been very kind. I have just down the road." He was staring at our load: first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. "Well, well," he said, laughing, "It"s a cupboard you"ve got here! We thought it was…er, something else." My wife began to laugh. Then the truth hit me like a stone between the eyes. I smiled at the officer. "Yes, it"s a cupboard, but thanks again." I drove home as fast as I could.

At the beginning of my 8:00 a.m. class one Monday at UNLV(拉斯维加斯内华达大学), I cheerfully asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that his weekend had not been very good. The young man then proceeded to ask me why I always seemed to be so cheerful. His question reminded me of something I"d read somewhere before: "Every morning when you get up, you have a choice about how you want to approach life that day," I said to the young man. "I choose to be cheerful." "Let me give you an example," I continued. "In addition to teaching here at UNLV, I also teach out at the community college in Henderson. One day a few weeks ago I drove to Henderson. I exited the freeway and turned onto College Drive. But just then my car died. I tried to start it again, but the engine wouldn"t turn over. So I put my flashers on, grabbed my books, and marched down the road to the college." "As soon as I got there, the secretary in the Provost"s office asked me what had happened. "This is my lucky day", I replied, smiling." "Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day?" She was puzzled, "What do you mean?" "I live seventeen miles from here. I replied. My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn"t. Instead, it broke down in the perfect place: off the freeway, within walking distance of here. I"m still able to teach my class, and I"ve been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class. If my car was meant to break down today, it couldn"t have been arranged in a more convenient fashion."

When I walked into the house after school, the first thing I noticed was a box with items I recognized from my dad"s office. When he told me that he was laid off, I thought he was joking. Then I noticed his seriousness and realized he was telling the truth. My father has always been a hard worker. He has prided himself on his career. 1 I guess I had taken his work for granted. 2 For starters, he was home all the time. It meant my bed had to be made, my room cleaned up, and my homework done right after school. I would come home every day to find him at the computer searching for jobs. 3 He seemed down, though he tried to be optimistic. He asked my brother and me to spend less. I gave up my spending money, which wasn"t much. I also found a part-time job. 4 He explained that he never wanted to be laid off again, so he was going to start his own business. Day by day, I watched him build it. One evening I asked if he needed help. "Only if it doesn"t affect school," he said. I showed up at his office the next afternoon, and most afternoons after that for two months. 5 The terrible experience for our family taught me how to deal with difficulties. Now I know that through creative problem-solving, I can always find Plan B. I can ask for help and take risks. What I have learned from my dad"s understanding of business and his work ethic(信条)are two of the most important lessons I will ever learn. And they will be my principles for success. A. Providing for our family has been his joy. B. I made every effort to solve his problems. C. I began to notice how losing his job had affected him. D. My father"s unemployment created many changes in our lives. E. After months of searching, my dad decided to go in a totally different direction. F. His courage and determination helped him to become successful in his new career. G. I always knew he was a hard worker, but watching him in action influenced me a lot. |
